My ex-boyfriend was a self-proclaimed redneck...he was from Downstate Illinois. He was proud of the term...every time someone called him one he said "Damn right!"

Just for the record, I've seen people in California dressed like this, so I don't think it's right to say that someone who dresses like this is a redneck.

I would like to introduce a new word into the debate: HICK

Down here in TX, redneck is not really a derogatory term. It's just meant to be someone who is a little more country. When you call someone a hick downhere, it is taken as more insulting.

Hillbilly is hardly ever used here. To me it seems like more of a Kentucky or Tennessee thing, but that's just me.

Also, white-trash is probably the most derogatory of them all around here. White-trash has nothing to do with being redneck or hick... It is something all by itself. It describes people who are just poor, don't speak well, and are all-around trashy. These people DO NOT have to be country. Actually, most of the white trash people I have seen were in big cities, like Dallas.

Maybe its just how I grew up or even where I grew up but I've never used the word hillbilly. I don't even know how to describe a hillbilly & I've lived in KY all my live!
