Totally thought this when I was learning all the different GLO names.... still funny after all these years.

My husband went to Louisiana Tech where there is an AXO chapter. He says he always thought their name was funny since in Greek it would be pronounced "uh-Ho"

AOII has been called Army of Pigs in the past. Some chapters actually used the pig as a local mascot and may still! I can't imagine!! Anyway, no one is really sure why we picked the panda as our unofficial mascot, but some alums think it was to stop the Army of Pigs name! Ha!

One of my favorites. Especially since the original Greek Letters for the Fraternity were Sigma Phi.

The other one that seems to get a lot of "No really, this is what it means," is Phi Kappa Tau: Fellowship of the Knights Templar.

That one has actually been around for a long time. Some people will believe anything.

If it wasn't known before, then I bet this took off in the mid to late 1970s. In the stage production "Vanities" (1976; the t.v. movie first aired in 1981), three Texas high school cheerleaders all pledge Kappa Kappa Gamma in college. One of the lines they all recite together regarding Kappa is "Noble Noble Women with the Key to the Kingdom of God." When I was in college, the UK Kappas would often repeat this phrase themselves. More to throw people off... allegedly.

LOL. I can hear them now, wistfully saying "KKG! KKG! KKG E-ter-nal-ly."

Good play.

From "Vanities"
(Scene I takes place in the Fall of 1963)

School Intercom: Students, I am sad to announce that the President has been shot.

Joanne: The president of the student council has been shot?

Kathy: Oh, my God!

School Intercom: The President was gunned down in Dallas.

Joanne: Dallas? I just saw him in algebra!

School Intercom: If this report is true, classes will be dismissed for the rest of the day.

Kathy: What about the pep rally?

School Intercom: In any case, the football game will take place, as planned, this evening.

All Cheerleaders: Oh, thank God!
