I hear you on that... But it is interesting that "we" only win oscars when we play roles that are extra stereotypically black. In lostnfounds blog, someone mentioned the roles that we have won for, and each one of them are DEGRADINGLY stereotypical... They truly are laughing at us and not with us. I am very proud of the achievement but not the cost...

I was thinking that this am and came to this conclusion: we have to make films that ppl can relate to (Training Day, Hustle and Flow) so that they can get used to black folks making movies about other stuff that's more realistic from OUR point of view rather than THEIRS. Does that make sense? You have to do what's comfortable for the majority before you can show them your reality. That's my thoughts on it.

Emmm, that 'woman' singing is a sped up Willie Hutch sample. You might know him better as the one who wrote/sang the soundtracks for 'The Mack' (1973) and 'Foxy Brown' (1975), amongst others. The song sampled is "Tell Me Why Our Love Turned Cold".

I see, I think. Maybe Spike would have been more "acceptable" in the late 80s if he would not have come on so strong. I guess he would have done better by doing some okey doke movie, then came hard LATER with Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, etc.

Co-sign, Soror Moderator. Don't get me wrong, I have moments of being conflicted, too. But, I'm a *HUGE* Oscars fan, and I try my best (as a self-proclaimed movie critic as well) to think unbiasedly and not read too much into why such "controversial" roles get nominated/awarded (i.e. as if to say the Academy is purposely trying to embarass us, promote negative images, etc).

Queen Latifah made an interesting point on E!'s post-Oscars coverage that the Academy is becoming more in touch with youth, since many voters have kids who are into hip-hop, etc. Maybe this (and Eminem's win 3 years ago) is a reflection of that. We have a long way to go, but at least we're making some progress.

To quote "our" first Oscar winner (and SGRho soror) Ms. Hattie McDaniel: "I'd rather play a maid than be one."

Well, y'all know movies that actually do mean something in the African American community rarely get greenlighted and distributed into the theaters...

However, Tyler Perry is the exception to that rule. His magic for his last 2 movies and the money he made is very interesting...

Tyler has taken matters into his own hands, also the help of Lion's Gate didn't hurt. But, I do not foresee "Madea Knockin' Folks Out to Get Her Pistol for the Sense of Peace" will get nominated for an Oscar. :o

But, if 3 6 Mafia can get nominated AND WIN, anything is possible.
