Gamma Beta Chapter, UCLA

Article from The Daily Bruin, May 31, 2007:

Maiten Mowreader, the president of the Chi Omega sorority and a third-year political science and Spanish student, said her sorority house was the first at UCLA and carries significant value to the sisters.

“Walking through the house, we are constantly reminded of the generations before us that lived here,” Mowreader said.

“There are pictures hanging that date back to the 1930s and 1940s (that) show parts of our house that still look similar today.”

Chi Omega also keeps in contact with older alumni [sic] and recently held a reunion for women who had graduated 50 years ago.

“(The women) were so excited to see the changes that had been made but pleased to see some things about Chi Omega never change,” she said.

Chi Omega (formerly Theta Alpha Pi) was the first sorority installed on campus in February, 1928. The Chi O house would have been near the present Clock Tower. Sorority Houses were were built on the back campus in the 1930s. The six houses were originally in a row located between the present Clock Tower and Everett Library. They were demolished in 1959 to construct the library and new dormitories. The Chi Omega Gazebo was originally built on the exact spot where the original house stood to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the installation of the Queens chapter. The national president of Chi Omega, at that time, was Elizabeth Carmichael Orman, alumnae from 1928, and a charter member of Chi Omega. The gazebo was moved to the front of the campus near Belk Chapel with the Clock Tower was constructed in 1997.
