True, but I wasn't aware that the DMV helped enforce that - it's a state agency, not federal. Though, you can register to vote when you get your license, so is it in that context?

Why not? You'd have to structure the college deferment so people don't abuse it, of course - perhaps by requiring an additional time commitment for each year you defer your service. I'm sure the armed forces would benefit from having people with college degrees in specialized fields.

On another note, what do you all think about women being required to register for the draft or participate in mandatory military service? I say yes, but women should not be forced to be front-line troops if they don't want to - they can serve in support roles.

I've already stated my belief that everyone should have to serve in some sort of capacity (see page one of this thread). I'm not sure about serving in the military per se, but in some governmental capacity.

There is a question on the FAFSA about whether male students have registered. I think that a lot of scholarships are not available to young men who haven't registered.

THe way some people WHINE and COMPLAIN about having to serve their country..you'd think the draft was already in effect

In all fairness and equality, women should have the same obligations as men have. I don't see how someone can expect to have equal rights when they don't have equal responsibility to up hold those rights.

On the other hand, not trying to sound like a pig, a lot of women can not physically serve in the military. There are some women that are just as strong as men, but on the whole they are just not physically built to do that sort of thing. There are many other roles that women can take though.

One thing that pisses me off about the military is the fact that when being tested on our physical fitness the standards are vastly different between the men and women. I don't think that combat roles should be open-unless those differences are settled-there are 20 other branches that women can easily serve in.

The idea of having a draft and allowing someone to go to school first is beyond ridiculous.
