I know I would be upset, heartbroken, devastated, I porbably would die, but I would just have to wait until membership comes available again. If it would be in a graduate chapter I would pray to get in like I have been praying so long and hard for.

I would just keep doing what I'm doing and if it's the Lord's will it will happen. I would never choose another though. Becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been with me for a long time, so I would never choose anything else. I do know that a chapter where I am didn't accept new members for 4 years.:eek:

Ladies,

There are numerous reasons why a Sorority or Fraternity decides to limit its membership intake. You may never know the true reason why. But it may have yet to be a local decision, but more on an international scale and all your disappointment should be directed into that matter. I can say this, for the organization of your choice, "the squeakiest wheel gets the old first..."

Thank you AKA-Monet. I am not going to give up. I recently found other graduate chapters in my area so I'm going to contact them also. I have wanted this for a very long time and I am destined to make it!

Ok well I have been interested in AKA for a long time. I have not even thought of joining another org. People ask me all the time how can you like one thing if you haven't looked at other options. So my reply is........how do you know your husband or religion is right for you if you haven't sought elsewhere? Exactly it is a feeling that lets you know it is for you. My belief is that AKAs are born not made. Nobody can make you into a XYZ, you are born with the assets (sorry if it is mispelled) that will bring productivity to that org. However, it is up to the org. to decide when you are ready. So I don't understand how a person could give up and just look elsewhere. I am not here to judge I am just stating my opinion. So giving up or hiring Johnnie Cochran is not worth it, if it is something you want badly then you'll wait. For the SFs in my boat, we can make it if we want it badly enough. Our greatest accomplishments are never easy, so don't think it will ever be. There will always be something to test your will and it is up to us whether or not we'll pass.
Sorry for the sermon, just advice to my SFs.

Realistically speaking....

If the organization that I wanted to become a member of decided not to have membership intake I would have to accept their decision (whatever the reason may be). I wouldn't be angry but of course I would have my concerns (every individual who has set goals or aspirations wants to achieve those endeavors.) But the fact of the matter is that sometimes life can throw a curve ball... or put a road block in your path. The key to success is to continue on. I would continue to network, I would continue to attend functions, I would continue on my quest. :)

Majority of the sororities have been around for more than half a century... I doubt they are going anywhere- anytime soon. I am still very young... therefore if the Lord blessed me to live to see each day- that would be another day that I was closer to achieving my goal. I would continue to be involved in my community, continue to be active in my other orgs, and continue to live my life to the fullest. So whenever the organization did decide to have membership intake again... I would hope that my loyalty and patience paid off :D

That is what my Sorors and I mean it has to be in your heart, as well as faith, hope and LOVE. Really, when I think about it, it takes faith, hope and LOVE to be a lady of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ...

I agree with many of the replies. You have to have faith and patience. If your heart is truly with one particular organization, how can you change your mind if the one you say you want is not having intake at the time you want them to . I hav a friend who wanted to join one organization in college, then she changed her mind about three or fffffour times. I have never ever wanted to be anything but an AKA and I will be patient and continue to praise the Lord, live my life, take care of my children, keep doing my volunteer work and wait until the intake process is here and hopefully I'll be accepted. God Bless all of the ladies on this board.

I'm surprised I hadn't responded yet...but I'm with most of my fellow sisterfriends and say that I would be upset at first, but just stick it out and wait until my day.

I'm about to go through it soon. At my school most of the D9 orgs have Spring lines only, and since I'm graduating in December, membership here has passed me by. But in the meantime, I try to do as much research as I possibly can and I'm getting ready to work those networking skills :D But, my organization of choice is in my heart and it will happen when it is supposed to happen.

I know this thread is old but i'm new to the board and decided I'd like to respond to it anyway

If Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated was to end allowing new members to join yes I'd be sad and disappointed but my status wouldn't be changed. It's one thing to never be accepted into a group and a whole different situation to be kicked/put out. If you don't fully have something, it's hard to completely appreciate what you are missing. I'm sure this idea is different for people who have wanted to be a member all of their lives. I feel that just because you don't wear the colors or hold the title doesn't mean you can't accomplish or help accomplish the same goals that actual members are. It's really all in you heart and determination. Being a part of the sisterhood and feeling as if you really belong is the ultimate goal but isn't necessary required in order for you be successful and help others. Anywho, that was my little speel on the situation. Meanwhile everyone just pray that this scenario never becomes true!

........and it would highly mimic the sorority that I so wanted to be apart.

Then sorority XYZ that closed there doors to membership will see us around and say "there go those wanna bes".... and I will surely smile and say "yes, here we are".

But that's if, and only IF this tragedy occured.

:eek: Initially, I would be shocked and upset. But if the organization felt that discontinuing intake for a period of time was in its best interest, then myself as an interested individual would have no choice but to be accepting of that decision. In the mean time I would stay on top of my grades, community service and research all while remaining prayerful and vigilant. And if it was meant for me to become a member then it will all come to pass in due season.
