I agree that I don't think that, at the end of the story, Rowling is going to pull a major switch and say, "Oh wait, prophecy applies to Neville, Neville kills Voldemort, Neville is the hero . . . haha, you thought it was Harry the whole time!" But I do think that Neville is going to be very important in the later books and probably the final battle because of that prophecy. Rowling has said that so far, nobody has really guessed the ending of the stories . . . so that means there's going to be some kind of twist at the end, and not a predictable one. I think there is more to the prophecy than meets the eye, or else it wouldn't have been given such a big buildup. And knowing how many secrets are concealed in the HP books (Rowling still insists that there are a lot of big things about Book 2 that nobody has guessed at, that will become important in later books) I wouldn't be surprised if the full extent of the prophecy doesn't become clear until later. |
Finally,
I can come into this thread without worries about spoilers. :) Some random thoughts:
Okay, so that was lots of thoughts. *Eagerly awaiting book 6* |
65% obsessed with Harry Potter.
I scored lower than I thought, mostly because I've never been to England. I wonder how often security guards in King's Cross stop people trying to make it on to Platform 9 3/4. :) KappaStarGirl- I like that theory. I've got a friend who's calling tonight to argue about the book- I'll be bringing your theory up. :) He also hates apologising, and hates admitting he's wrong, and to go along with the current ministry status quo would mean doing both. He's also heard comments from many parties along the line of his parents having no ambition. I think many people in the Ministry see his father as somewhat of a joke, and unfortunately many with that attitude are higher up. If joining the Death Eaters was presented as a way of "rising above" his lowly family, I think he would jump at the chance to do just that. His brothers have always regarded him as somewhat of a joke- remember the scenes where everyone in the family except Percy and Mrs. Weasley are laughing at him? I think any persuasive person could capitalize on this, and he would be more likely than some one just the odd one out who felt more respected and secure of everyone's love. How do you think he'll react to the violent nature of Death Eater activities? Do you think he'll be a gung-ho Death Eater? Oh, and when you a start posting that fic, PM me. I'm intrigued. Is that the fic you've mentioned making notes for in your lj? KKC, darn it. Oh well, if you ever decide to post, I can promise at least one reader. :) |
I think Percy would make a PERFECT Death Eater . . . the only question I have is how he would go from working for the Ministry to being a Death Eater. There'd have to be some sort of event that would be the trigger -- because as much as Percy likes rules, he doesn't want to be evil. It's not like he's going to say, "Oh well, the Ministry is in chaos . . . I suppose I'll go over to Voldemort's side now." Maybe the Imperius curse will play a role?
|
What if someone that Percy admires, e.g. Fudge, turns out to be a DE? Percy, by following Fudge's lead, will be helping Voldemort & Co. and hurting Dumbledore & Co. Fudge will convince Percy that Voldemort really is in the right, will bring order back, etc. Then Percy becomes a DE, doesn't like all the violence, so he gets killed, rather like what happened to Sirius' brother.
|
I REALLY don't think Fudge is a Death Eater. (IMHO, he's just aan idiot that didn't have the courage to face facts until they were shoved in his face.) However, I could see how someone Percy respected turning out to be a Death Eater could bring about that change.
I think any fall to the Death Eater side with Percy would have to be gradual, over the course of a whole book, even. I think he has personality characteristics and experiences that make willingly becoming a Death Eater very plausible given the right circumstances. JKR could put him under Imperio but I think that would take all the fun out of life. :D Oh, and I wonder if Professor Umbridge's allegiances were really to Fudge and the ministry. What if she was using Fudge's idiocy to serve Voldemort? |
you know i was thinking about all that death eater stuff today reading this thread. really, a lot of people who are suposedly completely against Voldemort and the Death Eaters were working for Voldemort by trying to discredit Harry and Dumbledore. ESPECIALLY Umbridge. She was even taking sides with Slytherin which makes me think something really shady was going on.
Now, I have a question for everyone. Draco Malfoy obviously has to come back to hogwarts next year because harry wouldn't have an antagonist his own age otherwise, but what do you think it will be like? His father is now a definitely known death-eater, as are Crabbe, Goyle, and Nott's fathers. Is he going to be able to get away with everything like the past few years? Will he be watched more closely? |
But think about it, hon. With the dementors revolting against the Ministry, even if Lucius Malfoy is sent to Azkaban, he'll get out. Either that or he'll buy his way out. Fudge does still have a soft spot for him. McGonagall, Dumbledore, and any other professor with good sense (so everybody but Snape) will be fair but keep a strict eye on Draco. Draco isn't involved with the DEs (though that'd be an interesting twist); he's just endorsing their actions.

I'm only 36% obsessed...that's really sad. I was expecting more. Time to start writing fan fics, I think! :)
What an amazing amount of intelligent conversation going on! I know these comparisons have been drawn before, but I like the whole Nazi/WWII comparisons. Especially with Voldemort not being pure-blood and Hitler being partly Jewish...and the OotP as an underground resistance group. I don't think Percy will become a Death Eater outright, but I do think that he will be manipulated into doing evil things. I also think it was really shady that Umbridge sent dementors and was buddy-buddy with the Slytherins. Weird. |
