My freshman roommate was awesome.

We were respectful of each other, he was fun, we hung out a lot -really a very chill kid, about the best roommate one could ask for.

He was a little weirded out by me pledging, but we still hung out, and talk every so often to this day...we talked a bit on graduation day.

My freshman year roommate was awful. She was anorexic and severely depressed, and she made me feel like I was overeating if I ate so much as an apple in her presence. On her bad days, she would stay in bed until 5 PM and i wasn't allowed to turn on any lights or make any noise whatsoever. She had all of these horrible class-less friends, one of whom stole several hundred dollars worth of my stuff. She made fun of me the whole first half of the year because she decided I wasn't going to get into a good sorority... guess who got cut from every house come rush? She would bring boys home, talk on the phone at top volume at 730 in the morning, and more than once I came home to find people sleeping in my bed - the best was when I found her friend and his girlfriend asleep in my bed.

I'm sure I had my moments too... my boyfriend slept over a lot although we never did anything with her in the room... but I did lock her out every so often (I figured she deserved it!)

Oh yes, and despite her raging eating disorder, she ate my food and drank my alcohol. All in all, a wonderful human being.

Three of them were wonderful! I lived in an apartment type dorm with 5 of us. One, however, was a nightmare. We had gotten to be friends because we met at Orientation, and I was excited to see someone I remembered. She told me that she hated her roommates, they were mean to her, and I was thinking, "But she's so sweet! So I talked to my roommates and asked if she could move in because we had an empty room. She moved in, and things were horrible. She liked to walk from the shower (on the rare occasion that she took one), to her room naked, but would stop in front of the TV to talk on her way there. She had this disgusting smelling body oil that she would spray on herself instead of bathing. It did NOT help mask any odors. She would borrow my clothes without asking (stretching them out in the process, as she was significantly larger than me), and made them smell horrible. The smell never came out, so I told her to keep them. I lost $500 worth of clothes that semester. I had cashed a paycheck and hidden it in my room, and then went to a friend's dorm for an hour. When I came back the money was gone. She was the only one in the room - it was a holiday weekend and everyone else was gone. She finally confessed to stealing it when I called the police. We don't talk anymore.
I love my roommates now - one gets on my nerves, but I love her anyway. We're all pretty good friends and do things together, but we also have different sets of friends so we are able to get away from each other.

Sounds like one of the guys in my floor. He is known as hippy Bob. Although the guy does not smell and respect everyone, except for the nudity thing. His girlfriend also does the same thing and walk to the shower naked. Such a crazy floor.

I didn't have a freshman roommate, so I'll talk about my first two roommates.

The first one wasn't really a roommate, we slept in different rooms but shared a phone line. The phone was in my room, and my roomie thought that meant she could just waltz in and out whenever she wanted to use the phone. This was always embarrassing when I had visitors over! Once, she got locked out of her room, and she pulled me out of the shower to get my key to open her room (it was the same cut of key for our doors) AND HER FATHER WAS THERE!!! Thanks but no, I'm not fond of old men seeing me in nothing but a towel!

My next roommate, however, was AMAZING. I just ended my second year of school, so this was just this past semester. She was a member of Theta Pi Gamma, the sorority which I had been wanting to rush for the past semester but had been too shy to rush. Thanks to her, I had confidence to go to this spring's rush events, and was offered a bid, which naturally I accepted. It was really awesome to have my roommate as an active while I was pledging. All the times that were difficult, all the times where I almost gave up, she gave me that extra push to get through to I-night. And now that I'm a sister, my roommate and I will have an even closer bond. I'm really sad that she can't be my roommate anymore (I'm going to be a resident assistant this fall), but we'll still have our sorority!!!

My school didn't have dorms...but instead apartments where 4 people were supposed to live together. Well, by the time I got to the place for move-in day, two of the girls had claimed the bigger room, and left the other room for me and the fourth roomie. No biggie...especially since the fourth roomie never showed up! Anyway, to anwer the question, these girls were awesome. Our entire building (8 apartments total, with both males and females) were the closest bunch of friends. Every Tuesday night, one apartment cooked dinner for the entire building. Our parties were incredible, and were always themed! We all kept in touch--even the people who transferred to other colleges!

Funny side note: I just recently moved into a new apartment (in a completely different area from where my school was located) . I was running one day, and I ran into two girls that lived in my building my freshman year! Come to find out, they live in the same building as me, in the apartment right underneath me! What are the odds of that? I thought it was really cool!

My freshman roomie was great! We both went DG. She had her mind set on them from the begining and when I was invited back I had to accept to hear what all the buzz was about!

She was PHYSCHO!!!!
Growing up her parents were very controlling with very strict rules. She has a 9pm BEDTIME (not curfew) on weeknights and weeekends she had a 10pm BEDTIME!!! Needless to say she went wild when given a little space.
At first she was okay-- she would do odd things-- we had community bathrooms--if I left the room--it was "where are you going, when will you be back"-- "my response was "gotta pee"---if I didn't immediately come into the room she would question where I had been.
After about 2 weeks of going to bed at her bedtime--she figured her parents were 100 miles away. If I was there, I would cover for her-if I was out oh welll-- she could say she was sleeping.
Within a month, she was going to tons of parties, always drunk, skipping class-- but still lecturing me and acting like she was the parent.
It was truly a nightmare--- at 3am she would be locked out and throw beer bottles at our 3rd floor window and scream until I would come and let her in.
After about 2 months--she was acting strange--requested a new roommate-- the RA said no-- then, I am not sure what happened-- but the RA agreed on the reason that she thought one of us would not live to the end of the semester with the other.
At that point I got a private room!! Dorm life was great at that point!!!

i went to a jc my first 3 semesters...so the middle of my sophomore year i transfered to sdsu, and moved into the dorms---that spring semester is what i consider my freshman year.

anyway, i moved in on january 25th...my roommater had lived there the fall semester, so all his shit was there, but he was not. he did not come for like 4 days. he was a local kid named graham. dispite the fact that he was a pot head, skater, and anti-fraternity, we got along really well. he went home every weekend, and then 4 weeks into the semester he just did not come back. i saw him randomly, but he never slept in the room. a few weeks later he came and moved all his stuff out. he wasnt leaving sdsu, he just decided he was going to live at home since he only lived like 15 minutes away. he still paid for the room, so i wasnt going to get a new roommate. i was kinda sad that i would not have a roommate anymore, but i got over it when i realized i could pimp out my room. i pushed the beds together, arranged the funiture so i had tons of room, and didnt have to worry about privacy at all. it was great.

my 3rd year in school, witch i consider my sophomore year, i lived in the brand new suites that had been built oncampus. i was one of 8 guys living in the suite. they were really nice, but i just could not stand 4 of the guys i lived with...
pat--my actual roommate, was the worlds biggest tool. he was anoying, and a leach. he always tried to use me to get him into parties.
aaron--smelled really bad, and was a freak
dave--the most arrogant person ever. wants to go into politics, so you couldnt do anything "bad" around him because he was trying to maintain this pure immage...
sam--tried to rape my friend leslie when she was extremely drunk
but there was one guy i was really cool with. he is a tke, so we got along well.
after that fall semester i knew i needed out, so i moved into a different suite, everyone was chill. my actual roommate was a phi kap, so it worked our great.

My roomie was crazy, but I wasn't the best person to live with, I'm sure. We kept opposite hours, so she never saw me study and assumed I was just coasting through school (couldn't be farther from the truth). She didn't approve of intercollegiate athletics or the Greek system--I was in crew first semester, and rushed second, so she had nothing but reasons to hate me. Her name was the real kicker, though. Girl sounded like a damned stuffed animal.

wow, some of these stories scare me! I am kind of nervous about getting my roomate assignment. I don't get it until August, which seems like forever and a day away. I hope I get someone who will just be easy to get along with.

Don't worry. I'm sure it will be fine. I think the main reason my first roomie and I didn't get along is because we never talked. Before I moved in with my second roommate, we talked about all of the important issues...when do we study, how are we going to handle sexile, what kind of mess is tolerable, etc. The only thing we didn't cover before I moved in was how do you study. Which we soon learned needed to be discussed, because I study with music playing loudly and she needed silence.

So yeah. As long as you remember to talk about things before they become problems, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. You don't have to be best friends with your roommate, and you shouldn't expect to be.

One last word of advice: getting pizza together the first week you live together is a great way to start things out. :)

oh man listen to this...

My first year I was on a waiting list, so i moved into residence the second week of Oct...

Now, my roommate wasn't a bad person; he was considerate, easy to get along with, not the coolest guy in the world - but definitely a character.

His hometown was Timmins Ontario, which is about a 10 hr. drive north of Ottawa, in the middle of nowhere. His personal philosophy was ppl from southern ontario couldn't drink or stand cold weater. And many times did he reiterate this to me. I swear to god it was minus 30 celcius one day (-27 fairenheit) and he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. He's telling me how ppl are looking at him and going "what the UCKF?!"...conversely there's the drinking - in which he didn't do much of, but CONVINCED no one could outdrink him. One night he was drinking with some ppl from the floor above us (they wanted to test his bullshit drinking stories) and had him doing 2 shots for every shot all the girls did. He got so %*&#@ loaded, completely incoherent right after getting inside the bar they went too. From what everyone told me, he fell down the flight of stairs to the washroom and launched puke across every stall floor. On his way back, the french students (vince and pauline who were in the stalls with him), helped him back and we were deciding with this kid from egypt, (we had a lot of international students on these top rez floors) what to do. The only thing i remember when i saw him coming back was bouncing off the hallways like a pinball, because he couldn't walk worth a damn.

He pretty much wasted that yr., his grades were so bad that you couldn't base a g.p.a. on them. Now that i remember, the only time i saw his books were when we used them to hold the door open...

I had the roommate from HELL.

She was a chain smoker (I had requested a nonsmoker - she lied on her housing application because she did not want her parents to know she smoked) and a rude one too.

She was engaged, ring and all, to three different men in three different states, and was fooling around with at least eight others on the IU campus that I know of.

And those were her good points.

Thankfully she moved out second semester. I think we'd have killed each other otherwise!
