Sister Havana, my HS guidance counselor also advised me to not go to UIUC and get the heck outta state. Then a Florida Tech mailing showed up and I was hooked.
I know I would have gone to UIUC if I hadn't gotten into Florida Tech (and that wasn't going to happen, because UIUC was harder to get into). I would have lived in IT with my friend Emily and 2 other randomly assigned girls, I probably would have dated my best guy friend and who knows if I ever would have branched out. I always wonder if I would have joined a sorority there. Turns out a few girls I knew in high school joined Alpha Phi there, so it kinda makes you go hmm.... |
I wanted to go to school in PA so badly. i got accepted to Lock Haven Univeristy and Slippery Rock University. I also applied to Messiah College but I did not get accepted. I was so devistated that I decided to stay here in Jacksonville. Looking back, I am glad I did.

I only applied to one school. I didn't even really think about any others. Our HS guidance counselor tried to get me to apply to Northwestern, Michigan and Notre Dame but I didn't feel like filling out all the applications and writing the essays. That and we couldn't really afford out-of-state tuition and, although my grades and ACT score were good, I doubt I could have gotten scholarships.
Only about half of my hs class actually went to college and out of those, very very few went out of state. ISU, Iowa and UNI were the main schools people went to with a few going to the smaller private colleges (especially Central and Cornell College) in-state. But if I would have applied to other schools, I probably would have stuck within the Big XII--Mizzou, Nebraska and K State. |

Re: Where else would you have gone?

I think that if I had gone to any of those instead of Iowa State I wouldnt have as much community interaction like I do in the Ames metro area. There are plenty of people here that know my family and/or me from when we lived nearby years ago. I've been able to get involved in local elections and be interviewed with papers around the nation for the recent democratic presidential caucus season. Plus I dont think I'd be living in quiet neighborhoods, duplexes and townhouses, or have as amazing of a parks and recreation or public transportation as Ames has. |

Did not want to go to a Close to KC Mo. School and could not afford Un Mo.
Wanted to go where none of my friends went. Went to NWMo. Wanted to go to KSU, Ks. or U. Co. To far away all of the family were going to die. None!:) Grad. PSU, Ks. Felt it better to be a name and not a number. Love being a Gorilla, PSU Mascot! Anyothers wierder than that???:D |
Besides Radford, I considered Catawba, VCU and North Carolinia School of the Arts. If I went to NCSA I would have been ritual number one to a chapter, probably a different fraternity. It doesn't matter though. I wasn't planning on going to college untill like my juinor year of HS, because in my soph. year my mom's cousin told me all about his SAE chapter, which made me want to go to college, just so I could be in a fraternity. I'm not kidding.

I applied to like fourteen schools. I was always expected to go to Harvard - my dad's entire family went there. I got waitlisted and we could have worked family connections to get me in there, but I just didn't want to go to Harvard - I was absolutely miserable when I went on the overnight and stuff!
I also seriously considered going to Tufts after I got in - but i would have gone with all these people from my HS class. If I was applying again I would apply to more southern schools - Vanderbilt, UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, Emory, and RIce probably. Most everywhere I applied to was in New England - except Northwestern, where I wound up, and Tulane, which I got a scholarship to but didn't want to go to. |
I applied to:
William & Mary UVA CMU Pitt. As I was only 16 when I started college, my parents didn't want me to go out of state, even though I had a full scholarship to three of the four schools listed. They felt that I wasn't mature enough at the time, and they were right (in 20/20 hindsight). So, the plan was that I would go to Pitt for a year, then transfer to William & Mary. But William & Mary doesn't have an Alpha Delta Pi chapter, so... that's my story! |
Well I was a silly kid, I applied to many schools without regard for cost... or not really knowing what I wanted to do :).
So I applied and was accepted to: University of Toronto Carleton University McGill Cornell Oxford Cambridge and with-out applying to I got offers from: Royal Military College West Point Annapolis Sandhurst - all because of my then recent enlistment in the Canadian Reserves... but mostly for Hockey :) West Point and Annapolis also courted one of my younger brothers... who knew what could have been ;) I admit that my Hockey playing skills may have been more prominent, than my academics, in the minds of some schools. If money wasn't a concern, or I was more sure of what I wanted as a kid I most likely would have went to one of the British schools... civilian or military. |
If not Georgetown, I would have gone to Hampshire College, aka, "Shaggy" of the Five College Consortium.
I think I might be a totally different person.... |
If I hadn't transfered to Stony Brook, I probably would have gone to (some I applied to, some I didn't):
SUNY - New Paltz SUNY - Albany UC - Santa Cruz NYU |
UNT, Panola JC or Angelina CC.
Imperial1 |
I did early decision to the school I attended. However, had I not made the decision to go, I would also have applied to George Washington and American U since my dad is a GW alum (undergrad and med school) and mom attended American. I'm seriously considering GW and U of Iowa for grad school....great places.
