Hair crossroads
 

Ladies, I am seriously considering letting my relaxer grow out of my hair and try the naptural thing. I've been relaxing my hair for a very long time (15 years) and want to give my hair a serious break from the chemicals w/o breaking my hair, know what I mean?? I had to call my mother this morning and ask her if she remembers what my natural texture was like b/c I do not remember!!! What is the best way of doing this? I know at some point I would have to cut some of my hair. Any info would help.

Hello all, I don't mean to inturde but I have a question...I am hispanic and I have always wanted braids...good idea or forget about it? If good idea where should I go and will I get wierd looks?? Just curious...I like the way braids look and when I went to CANCUN i got some in my hair and I liked them. Thanks for the comments...

Check out Nappturality.com that will get you started. There is a message board for people who are transitioning. There is also a book called "Let's Talk Hair" but I cannot remember the name of the author. The book goes through how to care for AA hair. It is available on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

There is a place call Ada's hair braiding in Cheverly on Landover Rd (301) 583-0430 that does a good job and also Claudettes Braiding in Hyattsville on New Hampshire Ave(301) 434-3545. I'd highly reccomend Claudettes they do an excellent job they are just a bit expensive, ada's is also good as well.

I had some knot-less cornrows in my hair earlier this summer. They were awesome! I am getting them again this weekend. They are virtually stress-free on the hairline, they give your hair a nice break from styling, and since mines were done so small they lasted nearly two months. I have nappy, natural hair hair and my roots did not look "bad" during those months, wearng a scarf every nite and adding a little alcohol-free gel kept them nice and neat. I think any type of braided hairstyle can cause balding if done too tightly includng micros. If you can find a braider that knows this technique, I would give em a try. I could barely tell she was doing anything to my head, the braids were firm but not tight and they were off tha chain! Somehow she did a technique where the ends of the braids were gold and the top was dark without intermixing the colors. one word TIGHT! Variations of these braids will be my holy grail for the winter!

I just got braids (micros) for the 1st time and I absolutely love them!!!! My only concern is washing my hair. I was told not to wash it but to apply seabreeze (the facial cleanser) to my scalp and once that dries, grease my scalp with a light grease. Has anyone heard of this before?

I have heard of using seabreeze to cure razor bumps but not cleanse the scalp although it's possible. However, my braiders suggested to me to wash my hair often as possible to prevent the hair from being matted, use a good deep conditioner, and use pink oil moisturizer often .

Seabreeze is an astringent and can be used to cleanse the scalp. As a matter of fact, it's recommended to use in the beginning stages of your braids. Please stay away from pink oil moisturizer or anything that contains mineral oil. It's no good. Mineral oil/Petrolatum is a substance that just lays on top of the hair and attracts dust. It tends to interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, and disrupts the skin's natural immune barrier leading to dry skin. The reason why you see the substance in many products because it's cheap. Look for natural ingredients in the products you buy.
