When I read that, I felt robbed. :(

I understand what you mean about Jasmine but she and Cindy were great comedic foils to Huey's seriousness. I still LMAO @ the card that Cindy gave Huey back in 2001. Oh and when she was on her Free Puffy crusade. LMAO

These comments from the article were funny:

“At a certain point, I just got the uncomfortable feeling that this was a bunch of people who were feeling a little too good about themselves,” McGruder said afterward. “These are the big, rich white leftists who are going to carry the fight to George Bush, and the best they can do is blame Nader?”

“I don’t go to the cartoonist conventions,” McGruder said. “I went once, to the Reuben Awards”—the Oscars of cartooning—“and I didn’t feel very welcome. I felt a palpable sense of resentment. Bil Keane was the m.c., and he opened doing more than one joke that was clearly aimed at me. It was raw—just some f'd-up s#!&. O.K., and yet, if I get out of my chair right now and beat the s#%$ out of you, then I’m the bad guy? You’re sitting here, clearly dogging me—not by name, but how many black cartoonists are working? He told some joke about diversity in comics. Like ‘There’s a lot of diversity in comics these days. They don’t have to be funny, they just have to be diverse.’ There were a couple of shots at me where I was like, ‘Motherf@#%#r, you don’t know me. We’re not cool.’”

ITA, that's when the strip was at its best. But it seemed like the only thing of substance he could say about Jasmine was that she was confused. That seemed awfully...trite..for a man of McGruder's obvious talent and intellect. I know people have that opinion of biracial folks, and everyone's entitled to it, but at some point it just sounds tired.

There haven't been any strong female presences in the strip since he dropped Cindy and Jasmine to recurring status. I'm hoping that someday he'll feel inspired enough to come up with some fresh material for the both of them and bring them back.

Oh, and after reading that article, I just have one thing to say: Condoleeza Rice is a brave you-know-what to ask McGruder to work her into his strip. :D

You ain't never lied about Condi. THAT shocked me the most. I was like WOW she did. She must have been smoking that stuff, lol.

There is no female presence in the strip now that Cindy, Jasmine, and Jasmine's mom are gone.

That was an interesting article, with some good quotes. I saved this one, because it is how I frequently felt at a previous job.

“Somebody has to sort of translate the drums for white folks, and occasionally they call me to try to do it,” McGruder explained.

Commentary

For those who don't know, I am a full time writer and editor. I regularly get this e-bulletin from MediaBistro.com. I thought I would post this up. The LA times recently did a commentary on the Boondocks. Enjoy!

ANGRY YOUNG MAN
Aaron McGruder's in-your-face cartoon strip, The Boondocks, takes no prisoners, black or white. How did this nice young man from the suburbs get so mad?
