The name for this storm here in DC is Snochi, which won out over Snowden

As of late last night, my car is no longer stuck to the street! And, while I'm not naming names, but the one window was open during the past week of snowfall. :(

On a more positive note, it is going to break the freezing point in KC today! Woo hoo! We may actually get to see our curbs again. I think it will still be a couple days before we actually see patches of open ground, but there's good news and sunshine on the horizon! But man oh man, watch out for those icicles.

What are these "curbs" of which you speak? I have forgotten what they are....

A fellow professor told me his mailbox looked like a "Hobbit Hole" -- I'm sure there's a curb under there somewhere, but it's going to be a long time before it emerges.

^^^ Please tell me the snow was intentionally shoveled that high and it really didn't snow that many inches/feet.

Sciencewoman 02-13-2014 01:40 PM

That's real snow...it just keeps piling up, because there haven't been any thaws. When I drive to the end of the driveway, I have to get up some speed to make it over the hump of snow that's left by the snowplows, and hope that there aren't any cars coming, because you can't see them over the snowbanks.

yes, but the point is the same snowplow that has created the "hump" you have to drive over, has piled repeated days of snow to the side, creating the visual you've displayed.

That looks to be 7-8 feet. I don't think anyone's gotten that much fallen snow. Looks like it's been plowed to the side, to some degree.

^^^ Here's our data for this winter. We've had over 9 feet of snowfall. The snow pack hasn't been this high since 1978, when we had a huge blizzard. I was too young to drive then, but my mom reminded me that everyone was driving around with tennis balls or a bright ribbon/flag on their car antennae, so you could see their cars over the snowbanks. This mailbox is worse than any others I've seen, because the snow is over the box, but everyone at least has snow level with the box itself.

People! If your flight from Newark to LAX is cancelled because of the apocalypse, why on earth would you think that a flight an hour later is going to go? And your VERY IMPORTANT meeting that you absolutely have to be at? Yeah, it's not happening.

It is everything in me to not remind people what it was like after 9/11 and what happened to all those OMG I HAVE to be at this meeting situations. I can't make the weather go away and mother nature doesn't care about your photo shoot in LA. So just simma. You're not going anywhere so grab a cocktail and settle in. I recommend something fatty with lots of alcohol, like hot buttered rum.

/end rant

I think I'm officially snowed it. I can't shovel as fast as it's falling, and I now can't reach to fling snow as the piles are over my head where I've previously shoveled. I give up. Time for painkillers and a nap.

My husband and I had to venture out today. Our street had not been plowed, nor had our driveway. The husband had fun trying to maneuver his SUV into the garage when we got home. If we'd taken my car, it would be sitting in a snowdrift right now. (For the record, that "use kitty litter for traction" thing does not work.)

And we're supposed to get ANOTHER 3-5" of snow and ice tonight, on top of the foot of snow that fell last night and today. I'm trying to convince my husband to telecommute tomorrow.

Fortunately, we will still be able to have a nice romantic Valentine's Day dinner. Restaurants are so often jammed on Valentine's Day, and many of them offer overpriced prix fixe dinners, so, even before we knew how severe this storm was going to be, we picked up the ingredients for apple risotto. A candlelit dinner with risotto and a nice bottle of wine ... heaven :)

Ah, the Blizzard of '78. I'm convinced that '78 is what still makes all New Englanders rush out to the grocery stores and clear the shelves every time the meteorologists predict snow (of any amount). They always think, "THIS could be the big one!"

My parents' backyard (in northern NJ) earlier today:

It stopped snowing early evening. The skies cleared, the sky was blue and the sun partially came out. Such a big difference from how it has been since yesterday afternoon.

It is supposed to warm up. I pray this snow melts. There are inches of snow in the neighborhood. Two SUVs were trapped in the cul de sac. They drove into the cul de sac and were stuck in the deep snow. I'm glad they were able to get out because I don't want cars trapped around my house.
