06pilot...it's late so maybe my R.I.F./comprehensive skills have gone to bed...but why does MLK holiday/celebration in Hawaii surprise you? When I lived in Europe, Americans celebrated MLK Holiday as if they were in America --- I'm not understanding your comment. Our chapter will be helping several families that have relocated from Africa with organizing all the donated items and setting up each room until their houses are homes. :) |
It was meant more as alighthearted comment. It doesnt really surprise me. I think its great. Many people think MLK was a Black hero. I believe he was an American hero. Meant to be celebrated by all the world, not justt black americans. I think that if the world were opposite, meaning white people were discriminated against that MLK would have fought just as hard for their civil rights as he did for ours. Ibelieve he was sent by God on a mission of peace.

I recognized Dr. King's birthday by participating in the Chicago Cares MLK Day of Service. This is an event where several hundred participants are bused to various service projects around the city. This time, my team and I worked to pull together the children's library at a local elementary school. Everyone had a great time, and we got sooooo much accomplished. The highlight of the project was the colorful mural that we painted on one of the walls. When I get the pics back, then I will try to post one. This is my second time participating in Chicago Cares, and I definitately plan to make this an annual event!

We tutored students at a local library and taught them about Dr. King and his contributions. There were activities for all age groups and levels. each student took home a new book of their choosing.
Last night as part of the local NPHC we hosted a reception and Voter Registration with the other greeks. We provided extensive refreshments, prior to an annual Dr. King church celebration. Can anyone say S E R V I C E !!!! |
Although I wasn't able to attend due to a Moot Court competition, Sorors were at a library in our service area reading to K-3 children. The children were then able to create their own books as part of the Young Author's Program Initiative. I heard that it went very very well! :D

We helped to host a candlelight ceremony and a program commemorating Dr. King at a local Community College.

My school had its annual MLK day of service in which my chapter participated. We volunteered at an area Boys and Girls Club. We also participated in an annual MLK march.
