I think that's why the right is all up at arms about A&E firing them, but the left is (as far as I can see) just laughing about how dumb it all is. Nobody I've seen has actually cared that the guy said it because you can expect no better from those kinds of people. The discussion has solely been about whether A&E should/should not cancel the show and if another station will/won't pick it up.
For my vote, yes A&E had the right to fire him and doing so was not out of line with their mission and yes, another station will pick up the show and wring another season or two out. But being on some far right station it will lose its "normal" viewership, and preaching to the choir doesn't sell product.

I feel sorry for these people. They are losing their way of life and going down kicking and screaming. I think American society is evolving and leaving these yayhoos in the dust, and they don't like it. So in the meantime they are causing havoc for the rest of us who see that time has marched on and you're NEVER getting back Jim Crow (plus intolerance of gays and general abuse of women), no matter how many tea-partiers you elect.

tcsparky 12-21-2013 12:21 PM

I am very active with the Federation of Republican Women and have attended numerous Tea Party events with friends. These events have always had multiple races/ethnicities present, and I personally know that several of the attendees are homosexuals. I have NEVER heard anyone at any of these meetings (even private closed-door meetings) say that they would like to bring back Jim Crow nor advocate for abusing women. In fact, what I am hearing is that they would like for everyone to be treated with respect, INCLUDING Christians. The issues I am involved in, and that I have heard discussed, are not about race or religion, or even morals or ethics. But about making our communities better places for everyone.

blah blah blah white Christians are being abused lately blah blah blah.

tcsparky 12-21-2013 12:47 PM

DubaiSis.....how am I supposed to learn from your wisdom when you all you have to say is blah blah blah??????

I don't see that I said ANYTHING about Christians being abused. I am making the point that in my 12 years of being ACTIVELY involved in politics, specifically Republican Women, I have never ever ever heard these things that others state as fact about the beliefs of the people involved. I am totally confused about the origin of the statements, or why people think that I must personally feel this way, simply they have been told by someone or the media that people in this particular group feel this way. I have even gone around asking others in my groups about these issues with the intent of locating the people in my group who hold these opinions....and can't find them.

And again, I never said anything about Christians being abused. I will now, however, say that Christians are being abused in Egypt under the current regime. But that has nothing to do with our current discusison of Duck Dynasty. Which is a totally hilarious, fun-filled show!!

My apologies. You specifically stated that Christians need to be treated with respect. I think that can be extrapolated out to mean that these people think that Christians are not at present being treated with respect. I think there are many people within your fold (not you specifically of course) who are bent on the destruction of America in hopes of bringing back a simpler day when women, gays, blacks, everyone who is not white male and Christian, knew their place. Fighting against rights of all kinds for all people, IMO, is fighting for the destruction of our country. Some redneck on TV isn't going to do much harm, but the electeds who agree with him sure can.

But I honor your efforts. If the Republican party were run by women we would have a much more interesting, nuanced discussion in Washington.

We're doing our best! Our National President has a seat on the RNC, so at least we can sure we're heard, even if they don't always do the smart thing and follow our directions!

I quoted this on my Facebook page. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Rick Warren, he nails this one.

“Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”
~Rick Warren

One of the posts following this: I would add, "don't judge, don't hate, respect one another, live and let live, keep an open heart".

LOL. I can see the news report now: "Why do we allow these individuals to get tattoos? If we let this slide, next thing you'll know we'll be letting dogs marry ottomans. It's a slippery slope!"

The only other reason as to why some may make homosexuality seem so much worse than the others is probably because its counter to our natural biological purpose of reproduction. Looking at it from a simplified evolutionary point of view - our species can not survive if we are not producing any offspring.
If reproduction is the crux of the issue, why not allow homosexuals who HAVE reproduced to get married? They've fulfilled their good Christian duties, no? Also, when do we start annulling all those pesky marriages between people who are infertile/past child-bearing years/just don't want to have children?

But, on the other hand, when you really think about it the other sins are still considered taboo.

As I stated, my understanding is that a sin is a sin is a sin. There are no "little sins", "big sins", "kinda-almost-sin", or "this is not a sin because I said so".
This isn't directed to you, but until I see a task force to ban Red Lobster, all clothing stores, and divorces, I think this "argument" is bullshit.

In the What is your favorite word(s) that you never get to use? thread,I said that I like the word whackadoodle, which I use to describe goofs who express extreme viewpoints.

Well, I get to use it to describe this guy.

.

I've been saying this for years :)

If nothing else, gay couples splitting maybe have an arguable argument that their partnership is a legal partnership and they are due the protection of the courts, but I haven't had the opportunity to try that yet. I'm sure our civil judges would love me bringing essentially a divorce case to them though. Hope I get that opportunity before we just get 'em divorced like everyone else.

And I'm sure that if someone in Rick Warren's employ gave an interview to Ladies' Home Journal where they said something that makes him look like a jackass for employing them, he'd fire them.

Somehow, the suggestion that "you can expect no better from those kinds of people" seems a bit ironic under the circumstances.

It is extremely ironic.

I don't think people are surprised at what he said. All of the social media outrage I've seen is about the fact that he got canned for "exercising his free speech", cuz that allows you to get away with saying anything you want. I wonder why all of the people who've ever been fired because of fb posts and tweets can't use that one...

I agree. I just love when people who advocate for equal rights for everyone, don't stereotype, etc. make comments such as that. (sarcasm)

For the record, I'm from a small town, could be considered a "country" person or a "redneck" and fully support gay rights. Just because someone is a "redneck" or from the South doesn't mean they're going to say things like Phil Robertson said.

Anyway, as disgusted as I was by WHAT he said, I was more disgusted by the language he used and the specific things he said. It would have been different if he simply said "I do not support gay marriage" instead of comparing it to bestiality and prostitution.
