I doubt I'll pick up the third because I read there isn't an actual hunger games in it, and to be honest that was the best part of both books by far to me. The first two were fascinating though.

One of those scenarios (like many horror movies) where you're reading it and going "Holy shit I would not last a day." I would have been sprinting right towards that cornucopia and some career would have finished me off.

And frankly, it's good to see a book with a very strong female character that would appeal equally to young (and 20 something, hah) boys and girls. Although I did read that many feel Katniss's character was still manipulated too much in the third book to really come full circle.

The third is worth reading though. Katniss has to face that manipulation and everything just as she did in the Hunger Games themselves, but does have agency.

Did anyone else read last weeks Entertainment Weekly? Peeta and Gale on the cover.

The trailer for the first movie.

I love the trailer. I can't wait for it to come out in theaters!
It'd make an excellent sisterhood event haha :)

Former professor who is a scenic artist worked on the movie - I'm just happy he got some work! Hope the movie does land office business.

I loved Harry Potter but hate Twilight so I haven't found any new type of YA lit to read. After people kept talking about these, I picked them up and started the first one today.

I have watched the trailer already 3 times. I am not sick of it, each time I get more excited for the movie. I really hope the movie lives up to the trailer and the book.

I'm just curious how they are going to keep the violence in the book and get away with a PG-13 rating. Not going to mention any specific deaths for spoiler reasons, but there are definitely a couple that are going to be trouble...

Filming was going in the NC mountains about 3 miles from us this past summer. (Clearly, the first 20 seconds or so of the trailer.) Unfortunately, we never could get close enough to see anything, but still it was fun to know it was going on.

The trailer gives the impression that they might actually be faithful to the book. (Remembering Percy Jackson and the Olympians - The Lightning Thief and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 with a shudder.) The only thing that bothered me was the way you hear the announcer say "pan-EM" instead of "PAN-em." Maybe Suzanne Collins meant for it to be "pan-EM" (though given the derivation she gives of the name, that seems unlikely), but it just sound strange to me. I keep thinking Pan Am.

Really looking forward to the movie, now.

In my mind, when I was reading it, I thought it was pan-EM, because I was not a Latin scholar, I wasn't thinking along those lines and they didn't reveal the Bread and Circuses origin until later in the 3rd book.

I assumed like "mutts" for mutations, they were referring to all-America, or Pan-America which got bastardized and truncated to Panem.

I'm actually OBSESSED with these books.

The trailer just seriously made me so happy. It was so perfectly emotional in all the right ways. I CAN'T WAIT TIL MARCH!!!!

Huh. Never thought of that, but that would make sense.

I picked up on the panem = bread right off the bat, though I didn't relate it to panem et circensis until the author made that connection in the third book; I just related it to bread and hunger (games).

Speaking of the third book, am I the only one who was really wasn't satisfied with the ending of the third book?

Thanks to this thread, I picked up a copy of The Hunger Games at the library this weekend. I returned it yesterday and finished Catching Fire this morning. I haven't started Mockingjay yet, but the first two were surprisingly quick, interesting reads. I'm glad that I read them after the trilogy was completed, because I think I would've hard a hard time waiting between the first two books.

I'm looking forward to the movies. Although, I know I'll be disappointed. Just based on the quick opening ceremonies clip in the preview, it doesn't look like Katniss will be wearing Cinna's awesome creations as described in the book.

On the one end I'm like "yeah that sucks" and then on the other I'm like "well... is it even possible to do it?" So, I think that maybe the imagery and metaphor will be similar but she won't actually be *on fire*.

I'm looking forward to the movies. From what I've seen, they've done a pretty great job at sticking as close as possible to the imagery in the book.

I know, I know. But with all the CGI capabilities, I'd think it'd be possible to do it. I'll reserve judgment for this once I actually see the movies.

I saw the trailer prior to another movie I saw over the holidays. It wasn't any different from the trailer MC linked earlier, but I guess I paid more attention. It appears to me, from just a brief glimpse of Prim at the reaping, that Madge will not be the one who gives Katniss the pin. I hope I saw that wrong, because that would kinda bum me out. Yes, it's minor (as is K's backpack being black instead of orange, and the possible change in her attire), but it stands out enough to merit commenting on.

Regarding the third book, I really liked it. Yes, it lacked a Hunger Game, but IMO the battle made up for it. It did seem to end abruptly, but considering everything that happened (and Collins' insistence that each book have exactly 27 chapters), I can see why it ended the way it did. I, too, missed the old Peeta, but the 'new' Peeta brought a (much-needed) added dimension to the plot.

All in all, an excellent series. I'm more excited about the movies now that I've finished the lot. Looking forward to watching it play out on the big screen.
