That was brilliant! Though the Brave Maroon gave it right away :D

Thank you for this incredible story, and I hope that there are many PNMs reading this right now.

BraveMaroon- you are a great storyteller. I love how you focused in on the pertinent info that we needed to know, all the while remaining witty and throwing in some wonderful early 90s flashbacks. I rushed in 92 so I could relate with many of the fabulous aspects that you mentioned, particularly the white panty hose ! aaak! What were we thinking!

No doubt this will be a thread that gets bumped every recruitment season. You demonstrated an ability to hold your head high amidst getting dropped by some chapter yet also allowed us to see an honest side of your disapointment as well. IMHO this is what "brutally honest" means- being able to be honest with your OWN shortcomings instead of everyone else's. Too bad so many other recruitment writers can't see that.

Thank you for sharing a very well written story. So glad that you found happiness with Sigma Kappa!

FWIW, the wedding cake house sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it, and I did not guess that it was UGA.

I'm a guess failure. Womp womp.

Strawberry, Pineapple, and Kiwi kabobs are a staple at alumnae meetings.

Geez, you want me to spill all my details?? No, GPhiB was actually Jenga. I've intentionally not disclosed the Monopoly house identity, because frankly, they don't deserve my wrath.

They were nice enough girls, and honestly, the reason I likely got cut is that the girls from my high school there were frenemies with my sister, and they decided that I was a liability. I'll never know.

No harm, no foul. But yeah, of all the cuts I suffered, that one, along with SDT and DPhiE hurt the most. I honestly believe I would have been fine in a Jewish sorority, but that is neither here nor there.

Oh - and, yes - I do feel bad about being snarky to my Rho Chi.

And I often wonder whatever became of Silly. She's on FB, but I don't have the ovaries to friend her.

wonderful story. Mine in some ways matches yours, and I recognized details that were similar in 87 when I went through rush, which tickled me to no end. I've been thrilled at how well both of our chapters have flourished in the past 20 years, and even more excited when young women I have taught have joined either of our houses.

And AGDee - hugs to you, my dear friend and sister :)

I hope you enjoyed your collegiate years in Sigma Kappa as much as I did! And I LOVE UGA's houe!

Another GC Classic.

White panty hose, what were we thinking? What a glorious story. Thanks so much for sharing it!

Odds and Ends/Happily Ever After

Rushee McGee became a sister that fall - and though not every day was rainbows, pedicures and unicorns pooping cotton candy, Rushee had the experience of a lifetime. She made friends, laughed, cried, raged, got sick, got well, fell in love and and got her heart broken all under the roof of that house. She studied and got into her major. She partied and got into trouble (not legal or pregnant - just, you know, drunk). She fought with her sisters, she loved her sisters. She confided in them. They confided in her. Some days, she wondered what she had been thinking. Some days she wondered if things would have been different at Pictionary. Some days (not often) she thought of taking off her pin and walking out.

But most of the time, Rushee realized that what she had was special, insane and great.

In case you're wondering (and I know I would be), I suspect I would have found equal happiness at Pictionary - aka Alpha Gamma Delta. The slight edge that Sigma Kappa had was that Rushee wasn't a touchy feely girl, and prefs made her feel a little squicky. At Sigma Kappa her host read her a little better, and that was that. The matching food at AGD, for what it's worth were green grapes, buff cheesecake and red strawberries. It was adorable. Seriously.

Some years after graduation, I met a UGA AGD at Weight Watchers (eh, it happens to the best of us) and found out that she was a year ahead of me. We were thisclose to having been sisters. Of course, she had preffed at SK, too, so, you never know.

Finally, Scrabble, where I was a legacy, is Kappa Alpha Theta. I was paired up with their President in a project for school my Senior year, and found her to be a great girl - and I did finally get the house tour there when I met her to work on our material.

Today, many of my closest girlfriends were Greek (GPhiB, TriSig and so on)at their schools, and what we have decided is this:

Every house has partiers. Every house has studiers. Every house has girls who don't miss a Bible Study, and girls who don't set foot inside a place of worship for fear of lightning striking it. In your house, there are going to be girls you don't like, and girls you love. Every house has girls who own the entire Clinique (or in 2010 parlance, MAC or Sephora) line of products, and girls who consider Burt's Bees makeup. Some girls will date all the time, some will have to borrow other sisters' male friends every year for formal. Some girls will do things you don't agree with, and you'll either confront it or let it go. But go into it with an open mind, and give it a shot. Because, even if sometimes I can't believe I joined a sorority, there's nothing in this world that can compare.

Good luck!

Rushee "BraveMaroon" McGee

1. This made me spit out my tea, thankfully I had a notebook on my keyboard. I hope that the unicorns pooping cotton candy show up to our rush work weekend, lol. But I wonder what we would feed them?

2. Our chapter does this all the time, at tons of events. I won a prize at the junior circle/active Christmas party of lemon, green, and red tea. I don't know why, our colours tend to lend themselves well to food pairings.

Awesome story!!!

This was a very fun story to read! You are a good writer and kept us entertained and wanting more.

Well, you'd feed them sugar, naturally, and if you wanted red, buff and green cotton candy, you'd add the appropriate food coloring.

:D

I had no idea the matchy food was that big of a trend - I hesitated to even mention that detail because I felt extra suck-uppy at the pref party for noticing. I thought it was super cute - and it made an impression - I couldn't tell you what our house served that year.

gee_ess 08-31-2010 10:02 PM

I have to admit it - I judged this thread before I read it. When it first appeared, I read the first few lines, thought, "What, 17 years ago? That's not old or retro. That girl is still a baby. Not interested"

But, I read it tonight, and I LOVE IT! Hats off to you, and my sincerest apologies for being close-minded! I laughed out loud and smiled the whole way through. Plus, I did enjoy the immediate gratification of reading the whole story in one sitting!

I especially loved your follow-up assessment, description of the sorority experience. It is dead on.

Bravo!

This is the best. rush. story. ever. So awesome. It's honest. Well-written (with cliff hangers and climaxes). And just beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this.

Add me to the list of those who think this is a contender for Best Retro Recruitment Story Ever!

Your assessment of life in chapter was right on the mark -- what collegiate sisterhood is.

(And, P.S., are you a writer in real life?)
