Yeah - I'm wondering what they were hoping to gain by that... I'm not sure how I feel about members of a different council recruiting for NPC sororities.

I think it's a good idea. There are women of color in sororities all around the country, and if this school needs a little nudge by having two eminently qualified women serve as a springboard to understanding, that's great.

I'd love to know if the OP's chapter was one of the houses who got the 3 black women who completed recruitment. And I'd like to know how heavily the PNMs were cut, or if they all got invited back to the same, possibly more open minded houses.

I assume you mean NPC sororities because it goes without saying that there are racial and ethnic minority women in NPHC, MCGLO, and LGLO sororities around the country. Therefore, what does having an NPHCer help with recruitment have to do with the relatively small % of racial and ethnic minority women in NPC orgs around the country?

In fact, it looks silly that the the NPC needs an NPHCer because it couldn't find a racial and ethnic minority NPCer to mirror the supposed "women of color in (NPC) sororities all around the country" that people keep claiming.

Exactly, didn't anyone at the school think that the action would highlight the issue even more?

I agree. I know an older NPHCer (she wasn't a student) who worked for Greek Life and advised the NPC. She wasn't a recruitment counselor but her experience highlights what we're talking about.

She absolutely LOVED working with the NPC and it was a breath of fresh air from working with the NPHC, which was too familiar for her. One thing that she always noticed was that she was either the only nonwhite woman everywhere she went for the NPC; or she was one of only a few nonwhite women. And these were pretty big chapters. That's not bad in and of itself because I firmly believe that most of our GLOs have the racial and ethnic composition that we were formally and informally intended to have. Plus, we don't have a whole lot of "other race" interestees and applicants, therefore, it is usually not an issue of people being discriminated against.

But, it was funny because her presence highlighted the lack thereof. The nonwhite NPCers definitely latched onto her. The white NPCers loved her but everyone knew that there weren't any or many women in their chapters who "looked" like her. It became a topic quite often.

This is what I was thinking. It's one thing for us (as NPC groups) to require our own members to learn our formal recruitment rules and serve as advisors to PNMs - first off I feel like that's a lot to ask of someone that's from a different council. NPC members *should* know that stuff anyway (and I know they don't).

Second, I'd like to know if the NPHC women disaffiliated like an NPC member would - I don't know how I would feel if I loved my Rho Gamma and thought MAYBE I would end up in her chapter and then found out that not only is she not in the chapter I joined, she's not even in the same council.

For what it's worth, I don't like the idea of NIC members recruiting for NPC sororities or NPC women attending NPHC interest meetings either. When it's something that's oh-so-specific to a certain council, it should be done by members of that council only, particularly with things as important as recruitment.

been there done that. it's very hard for a southern chapter when they take their first black member. But once they get over it, they realize it's not as big of a deal and all those tears were just silly.

I was a current adviser when a black potential member was encouraged to rush by a member in the chapter. That was probably my most horrible moment watching young ladies not live our ritual - who otherwise were awesome in every way. and worse, was witnessing alumnae getting involved on the wrong side of the issue.

It made me physically ill.

The second time I experienced it, I was just a regular "kitchen alum" OMG with the mascara stained faces. and I was forever thankful that I was not part of the advisory group to deal with that voting night.

So after much needless ado the lady in question was invited to preference and then she (HA!) placed another sorority first on her bid list which is where she matched.

I think that was an enormous lesson in humility for everyone involved.

I don't see the point of them attending these events.

Not all chapters in the South are the same -- what's hard for some may not be as hard for others. Generalizations are not needed.

College Panhellenic Council. That's how it's referred to at some schools instead of just "Panhel."

I read that article and I also think it's ridiculous to have an NPHC member acting as a recruitment counselor for NPC groups, whether she's black, white, or purple. The NPHC method of rush is the exact opposite of the NPC's! I guess they were trying to do something positive, but this is so misguided.

The question though(and maybe you are not referring to the article) are the CPC sororities not affiliated with the NPC?

Answered my own question went back and reread the article. I got thrown off with the question.

I do believe that sometimes NPHC sorority members participate in CPC - but after looking at this school's greek life website, that doesn't seem to be the case. In fact, I kindof don't like thier website, now that I'm griping about it - there's a "sororities" section, an "NPHC" section, and a "fraternities section."
