As I understand it, Theta ultimately did get to quota through snap bids, but as TSteven said above, it was a little shocking.

This really isn't that uncommon. Sometimes it happens that more "selective" groups get too selective before pref. Theta is still one of UK's strongest groups.

Exactly. They cut above the percentage recommended by the RFM and end up missing it by a few. No biggie.

I know what snap bids are, but do these girls get their bids with the others on bid day, or are they extended later? Had these girls not been on the bid list originally? I would feel like I wasn't really wanted by the house if I knew I was offered a bid just to get to quota. Even if it was from a top house on campus.

It's often not a case of "being offered a bid just to get to quota." It's more likely girls who the sorority liked and wanted but had to cut because of RFM. If they just wanted something with an ovary, they could pick random girls off the street.

You can either obsess about not being the first person on the bid list or you can go to bid day and have fun. AFAIK snap bids do go out in time to do all the bid day stuff, etc.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I LIKE the feeling that i got into an organization by the skin of my teeth, and that I'm surrounded by people who are more qualified than I am (by whatever criteria). I worked very hard to get into a college where most people were smarter/more accomplished than me, a singing group where most members were better singers than me, etc. Those have always been the organizations where I've had the best experiences and grown the most. Your peers bring you up to their level.

My daughter was snapped at UK a few years ago. She got the early AM call that she had not matched and was told that it was possible she could be snapped. She got her bid at the same time everyone else got their's so not many people even realized that she was snapped and not matched.

Are you kidding? Elite chapters only accept people with two ovaries.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Thanks leesek, this is what I wanted to know, and congrats to your daughter and her chapter!!

and Drolfille, You're too funny!! I'm sure only girls with 2 ovaries get bids to elite chapters at any of the SEC schools.
