I know someone who was at that concert. Well, I used to know her - she was one of my brother's former girlfriends (in his pre-pastor days).

If you take all of the alcohol, drugs & sex appeal out of rock and roll, there's going to be a lot of bands singing, "Close to You".

This was 1969 - don't you think that it pushed the envelope further than it had been prior to this concert? The one person I knew who was there had said that much more of it was made than should have been, that it was something like 10 seconds out of an entire concert.

From Wikipedia:

"During a Doors concert on March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Florida, Morrison gave a controversial performance. The restless crowd was subjected to Morrison's lack of interest in singing songs that night, as well as to his unconventional emotional outbursts, screaming challenges to the audience, and making irreverent social statements. Unknown to the audience was Morrison's exposure to The Living Theater the week before, which influenced his performance. The confusion and taunts led to some out-of-control situations, such as Morrison allegedly exposing his penis, which resulted in an abrupt end to the show after only one hour.

At first the performance was simply seen as Morrison intoxicated beyond any saving grace, combined with his frustration over the trappings of rock stardom and his personal demons finally reaching a climax. But once a review of the show was reported in the local press on March 3, Morrison's exhibitionism took on a snowball effect in the form of a media and legal firestorm. On March 5, a warrant was issued for Morrison's arrest on charges of indecency and obscenity, and one after another all the subsequent shows were cancelled."

The Doors because they're from the U.S.

I think they started that way, but became a "real group" eventually.

In the for what its worth category - Mike Neismith and Peter Tork of The Monkees knew how to play their instruments prior to the show as they were musicians in NY. Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz were actors who could sing. Mike Neismith wanted the Monkees to tour but Mickey Dolenz said that he couldn't play the drums. Reportedly Mike Neismith told Mickey Dolenz that "he was an actor so act like you can play the drums". That is what Mickey did and they toured the U.S. in 1967

Their original opening act was, believe it or not, Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was often booed off the stage and had bananas thrown at him. He quit the tour after a few shows.

My vote:

The Who - great live in the early '70's
The Beatles
The Doors
The Rolling Stones - one of the worse live bands I have ever seen

Bumping because I'm watching a new VH1 "The Greatest" series. They did the 100 Greatest Artist of All Time. Here's how these bands stacked up:

65. The Doors
13. The Who
4. The Rolling Stones

And of course, #1:

Just sayin'.

That was a great show but I conveniently fell asleep at the #3 mark.
