Just for the record, it is possible to switch fraternities according to NIC bylaws. Just make sure you follow the guidelines established by the NIC.

I was successfully able to switch from Lambda Chi Alpha to SigEp.

QFP.

Why are you asking about getting a bid from a fraternity then?

I was asking a rhetorical question to get the original poster to keep rushing. I just realized how old this post was...

How did you go about switching houses? I transferred this fall, but I initiated at a house on my previous campus. I withdrew from the house and had nothing to do with it during the spring. I never signed any type of release form or anything, but now I have begun to pledge at a house here on my new campus. I just don't know how you can get past all the regulations and stuff. thanks.

I hope you get found out and dropped from both fraternities.

If you want to get released or a refund for housing then you will have to contact national. If the house was a gift from the school (like SigEp at mine), then contact the school.

You contact the national office of the fraternity into which you were initiated and ask them if there is a way to be released from membership -- ie, to be released from the pledges and oaths you took -- and if they do, ask what the procedure is. Until you have followed that procedure and been released, you are still a member of the fraternity into which you were initiated and you cannot honestly represent otherwise to the fraternity you're now "pledging."

If you don't do this and pledge ahead anyway, then you are breaking the vows you made to the fraternity you actually are a member of and lying to the new fraternity. Real honorable.

Not to mention that if you are found out you will probably be expelled from both fraternities and the chapter you are pledging would get in trouble if they knowingly pledged you anyway.

In trouble with who?

National most likely, because they would be in violation of NIC bylaws. If the IHQ doesn't come down on them, NIC might come down on the Inter/national Fraternity.

I don't think NIC has any authority to sanction its members' individual chapters.

They would be sanctioning the fraternity as a whole for letting it happen. AT least that's what I think would happen.

I don't know how NIC would find out (unless an I/HQ told them, which they probably wouldn't).

Either way, I still hope this person gets found out and dropped from both organizations :)

Agreed 100 percent.

Are you talking about real estate? That's not what the poster was asking about. When he said 'switching houses,' he meant 'switching chapters/fraternities.'

I think he was talking about both -- being "released" from a fraternity and getting a refund for housing payments.
