Formal Convocation Panhellenic 9/25/11
Recruitment Philanthropy Round Panhellenic 9/28/11
Recruitment Philanthropy Round (Cont) Panhellenic 9/29/11
Recruitment Skit Round Panhellenic 9/30/11
Recruitment Preference Round Panhellenic 10/1/11
Bid Day Panhellenic 10/2/11

Bids go out around 2 or 3 pm on Sunday!

I love that they are encouraging PNMs to participate in CARE Walk as part of recruitment. That is an awesome idea. It's a nice way to meet people in a more casual environment.

I don't know the exact numbers for fraternity recruitment but I heard their numbers were going to be pretty big this year. I know the guys can still register for fraternity recruitment up until like Friday (9/23). I guess they let them take their time or something!! LOL!

I find it interesting that Ole Miss has a 3 round format instead of a 4 round format for FMR. Why is that?

Back in late August they had an "open house" round, Water Parties. It is done in late August and this was the 4th or 5th year they have done it that way. They didn't have Water Parties from the time I went through recruitment in 1996 until about 2006 or 2007.

To be honest, I think they should have this round closer to the actual parties. However, I think since recruitment is "deferred" (based on the football schedule so varies every year), I think the administration does not want those participating in recruitment to miss more classes because of parties. Water Parties are currently on a Sunday.

It seems to work here though. It might not be ideal but it works. They do use RFM here but I'm not sure why the parties are not structured more like other SEC schools like Auburn or Alabama.

KSUViolet06 09-21-2011 04:14 PM

Aren't a lot of schools (who are able to do so and don't have a ton of chapters) going from 4 to 3? My school went from 4-4-3-2 to 4-3-2 after I graduated. We used to have Open House - Philanthropy-House Tours-Preference. Now recruitment begins with Philanthropy Day.

So...do the Water Parties have "cuts?" If so when do the girls find out? Now? That's kind of weird but I understand the rationalebehind it.

No cuts from Water Parties. Everyone is invited to Water Parties and Philanthropy Parties. Water Parties (from what I was told) is not even mandatory by Panhellenic. So if a PNM had previous plans she does not have to attend. It is just an open house, no decorations, no songs, etc. It is only like 20-30 minutes long for each party.

I'm pretty horrified that they plan recruitment with no regard for the Jewish holidays.

If there aren't a lot of people there celebrating, unfortunately, it's not something that crosses people's minds.

It seems like recruitment numbers are higher everywhere this year, for fraternities and sororities both. The Class of 2011 has gone Greek! My oldest son is a freshman (and a new Sig Ep! :) I love saying it every chance I get) and so many people from his high school days have pledged this fall. I believe my community as a whole has seem more guys among the '11 graduates pursue fraternity life than any other class in quite a few years.

Anyway, one of the guys I know at Ole Miss is the son of a good friend. She's a little nervous about the out-of-state factor, but like all moms, hoping and praying for the best. All three are good guys.

ladybug12 09-24-2011 07:38 PM

I will be visiting Ole Miss for the first time for recruitment (although I have been on campus for several visits...it is beautiful!) . Hopefully I will be able to meet Ole Miss Glitter!

Good luck to everyone.

80sAST 09-28-2011 12:39 AM

Tomorrow is the big day good luck to all PNMs. Let the games begin!!

OleMissGlitter 09-28-2011 10:52 AM

Boy, did I get my a$$ chewed for bringing this up on Sunday. The school has only 5 chapters and they still have 4 rounds.

My cousin's big sis was from Mississippi. She had a sign on her door: "Shalom Y'all".

Unfortunately, not everyone is as sensitive to other's beliefs as I feel they should, which is sad. If I remember right, there was an incident a few years ago at Miami University where Greek Week hit smack in the middle of the Holidays, and it did not go over very well.

Today I told my boss, who is Jewish, that he needs to stop planning audits during the High Holidays. I am having a heck of a time scheduling people for meetings when they need to fly home early for each of two weeks. Half of our team is Jewish, from reformed to orthodox.

I have a Shalom Y'all t-shirt I got in Savannah (or rather, got from my mom's closet that she got when we were in Savannah).

In any case, a good way to keep Jewish women out of the Greek system is to hold rush over the high holidays. I'm glad that takes priority over interfering with a football game.

KSUViolet06 09-29-2011 12:57 AM

We always had it either earlier or later than the holidays, but never during. Even if that meant pushing it to the first weekend in October (not normal for us.)

Double posting because I didn't see your comment. What was the "a** chewing" reasoning?
My opinion: it's counterproductive to have that many rounds with that number of chapters. I guess schools have to do what's best for them, but really, cutting a round out hasn't affected retention or anything like that here. If anything, making it 3 rounds has helped it. And also, if you think about it, the round that we lost was that first day where the rounds were only 20 minutes each anyhow. It's not like we cut out, say, House Tours (45 minutes each) and we go straight from Philanthropy to Pref. It's a very beginning round.

80sAST 09-29-2011 08:48 AM

I wish someone would do a live recruitment story!!!My daughter was so hoarse last night !! She is feeling the typical first rush angst and absolutely hates cutting anyone!! She likes everyone she had! Oh if only everyone felt that way haha and we lived in a world of rainbows and unicorns!!Can't wait to hear stories. Good Luck to all the PNMS on their second day!

Sounds like someone on Panhel in a decision making position had one too many people end up in her chapter that made them say "oy vey, I wish we'd had an extra round to get to know these girls."

It was a long ramble from one particular advisor of another chapter
"We've always done it this way"
"It won't work any other way"
"BW isn't like any other college"
""If it ain't broke don't fix it"
"Too many girls drop out" (too many already drop out)
"It would never work"
"We would never get a chance to know the girls in just 3 rounds"
"I don't know how schools like OSU with 1000 girls going through do it" (um, OSU never had 1000 girls going through, it's deferred so you weed out a lot of the Grade Risks and know more of the girls, 80% of PNMs are from Ohio and someone in the house knows a majority of PNMS and WE ARE ORGANIZED)
(this was the point I really stopped listening to her ramble)

Basically, there was no reasoning to what she was saying and was appauled that I asked the question; she just didn't want to change. When she told me that the ONLY other college in the country that had a similar recruitment to BW was Akron ("oh, and maybe Ashland"), I nearly busted out laughing. You don't know how much I wanted to ask, so how many other colleges have you observed this? And, BW doesn't have House Tours because....no houses.

Personally, I think they need to go to deferred recruitment and do 3 rounds. BW is starting to get a larger number of Sophomores going through which tells you, they aren't ready to pledge when they begin college. If no chapters have reached total after formal, something is wrong with the system.

KSUViolet06 09-29-2011 07:56 PM

I think it's really funny when Ohio greeks at smaller schools tend to think that OSU has this HUGEEEEEE greek system or that their school's recruitment circumstances are special.

I don't want to hijack the Ole Miss thread further, but you can PM me more about BW if you want. Even as someone who lives in NE OH, I admittedly don't know a lot about other OH school's recruitment structures (outside of the others in the MAC and OSU.)

If FR in fall includes first semester freshmen I can kind of understand their reluctance to lessen the amount of time spent with the women; however, you're probably right in that those issues would be eliminated with deferred.

MaryPoppins 09-30-2011 06:06 PM

Anyone know how many were released and/or withdrew after Philanthropy (Wed. & Thur.) ?

dgdramadawg 09-30-2011 08:29 PM

My Ole Miss PNM is having a great time! :) Skit round today.

MaryPoppins 09-30-2011 10:11 PM

So glad your PNM is having a good time, dgdramadawg!

gee_ess 09-30-2011 10:49 PM

I have two rec girls going through recruitment at Ole Miss and I have had heard nothing from them! I am dying over here but wishing them well...I keep reading this thread hoping for a glimmer of how things are going.

Keeping my fingers crossed that both find a home!

MaryPoppins 09-30-2011 11:36 PM

Just heard that about 65% of PNM's returned for Skit Night.

80sAST 10-01-2011 01:15 AM

Holy cow that means 400+ girls dropped or were dropped goodness surely that is incorrect!

MaryPoppins 10-01-2011 09:10 AM

@80sAST - That's what I heard. I am not working in Recruitment this year. Did not come from any person in official authority. However, the number of registered PNM's this year was about 36% above last year and above the trend from past years. Maybe that made for a volatile year?

dvs-dz 10-01-2011 03:00 PM

I'm so excited - my beloved niece is going through Ole Miss recruitment. So far, so good, but wondering what this afternoon will bring. My sister-in-law is hoping, hoping things will work out with her legacy sorority.

I'm sorry, but I would prefer not to give any details live.

nolesmom2011 10-01-2011 04:08 PM

Haven't heard from my PNM that I sponsored since the first day -- she was very excited -- and I'm sure this week has been crazy. Fingers crossed!

I just got home from the AOII house...I am not sure that is correct at all. They are still saying quota will be between 115-130. So, I do not believe that is correct. AOII is doing very well! I have heard ALL of the chapters are doing well too! So many pretty PNMs tonight too! I can't wait for bids to go out tomorrow! (Oh and a bunch of my rec girls were back tonight at AOII Pref!!! YEAH!)

ETA: The weather has been amazing the past couple of days! Cool, breezy, sunny! Great recruitment weather!

KSUViolet06 10-01-2011 08:50 PM

130?

Wow.

Are houses at Ole Miss equipped for such large numbers? I know that a lot of chapters have renovated/added on as classes have gotten larger, but 130 is a whole new level of largeness. lol.

Not really but all have added on in the past few years...this will put all of the chapters over 300 members. Some chapters might even be closer to 350! I saw all of the bid day bags for AOII lined up at the house tonight! So many bags and jerseys!

KSUViolet06 10-01-2011 08:57 PM

^^^I bet.

My immediate next though when I heard 130 was "that's going to be one long NM ceremony." lol.

How do you manage rituals like that? Do you have 2 separate ceremonies (ex: one Sat and one Sun?) Or one big long ritual with breaks in between? (if you can answer of course)

Titchou 10-01-2011 10:38 PM

Well, I was at our new member ceremony for Alabama with 220 or so NMs this year and it really wasn't all that long. Maybe an hour?

KSUViolet06 10-01-2011 10:45 PM

^^^That's not bad. What do you do about initiation?

I mean this with all due respect, but from the data that I was able to find regarding the percentage of Jewish students at Ole Miss, less than one-half of a percent of students are Jewish. Probably half or so of those are males. Given those numbers, it probably doesn't cross their mind to schedule sorority recruitment around the high holidays.

I can only extrapolate from growing up in Tennessee, but I didn't really meet any Jewish people until I was an adult and moved to Atlanta.(That's probably as shocking to some people on this board as it is to me when I hear the same thing about someone not having met anyone who is African American at some advanced age.) There simply weren't that many around. I know the closest synagogue was about 50 miles from my house when I was growing up. I'm pretty sure that Mississippi is pretty much in the same situation as far as the population goes.
