That's great. I wish it were that way at AU!

Lamplighter 08-13-2008 10:46 AM

to uamomma and FreshmanDAD: Here's wishing both of your daughters good luck today! I'm waiting to hear from some of my daughter's friends who are also going through, and although it's not as nerve racking as waiting to hear from my own daughter, I feel your anxiety :) Let us know how everything turns out!

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 11:25 AM

This is my first post....I am anxiously awaiting to hear about the first day of cuts! I'm nervous but my daughter isn't. I'm really not giving her the scoop on how difficult it may be so that she stays relaxed and true to herself!

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 11:28 AM

I just heard from her! She got dropped by three but still has 10! Thank God!

Tex-A-Bama 08-13-2008 11:37 AM

That's great!:p Cuts have to be made. She'll find a home. I'm excited for her. Now if we can hear good news from Freshmandad.

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 11:53 AM

Thank you all for your best wishes. I told her above all to just have fun!

Don't worry, auburn has an amazing system and places as many girls as possible who maximize their options. Those who don't maximize or attend parties do not get this benefit. Is it guaranteed? I don't know that it is guaranteed but they do come awfully close to it.

AuburnMom08 08-13-2008 12:04 PM

Good luck Bama moms and dads! My daughter always wanted to go to Bama, I love the houses there. Such a beautiful campus.

AuburnMom08 08-13-2008 12:06 PM

Thanks WE07 - she is maximizing her options!

Are sophomores at UA guaranteed?

BAMA2 08-13-2008 12:20 PM

According to the Alabama Recruitment guide there is NO guarantee of receiving a bid. However, Alabama has traditionally had very high placement rates for those who go all the way through.

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 12:27 PM

I stand corrected..my daughter was cut by 4 but still has 10. I just want to say Good luck to all War Eagle moms too! My son goes to Auburn (whose girlfriend is on the other side of rush this week) and daughter going to BAMA so we are definitely a house divided!

Tex-A-Bama 08-13-2008 12:29 PM

Bama Rush PNM's have an opportunity after formal rush, remember Alpha Phi after Formal and it is adventageous for them NOT to have an all freshman class

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 12:45 PM

Does anyone know if mothers are invited to Bid Day like they are at Auburn?

AuburnMom08 08-13-2008 12:50 PM

I don't know if they are officially invited but I remember back when my daughter was thinking about going to UA, I read on a UA parents forum that the moms always go down for bid day and they were telling the different places around Tuscaloosa where you can buy things with their new letters on them.

KSUViolet06 08-13-2008 02:14 PM

Hope things are going well for our Bama PNMs.

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 02:54 PM

Have we heard from Freshman Dad?

Yes. But the girls usually spend the night at the house, so don't count on doing a lot with the daughter that day.
And if she doesn't get a bid...go. I should have been there after my daughter got her call.

DixieMom 08-13-2008 04:12 PM

My daughter was recruited last year and her little sister and I went down for Bid Day. It was alot of fun to watch all the girls run out of the stadium, then to go to the house and watch my daughter and all her new sisters show their excitement (and relief) after an unbelievable week. As soon as we knew for sure what her sorority was going to be, we went to the Trunk and picked up a few little items for which she was thankful.....letters, you know! She won't be able to give you much attention, but take the camera and she'll be able to see just how thrilled she was.

Wipledale 08-13-2008 04:31 PM

My Daughter got 8 out of 11....Just a few more days to go. She did tell me that at Tri Delt (or whatever the abbrev is) nobody she talked to had them on there list....Said some where in tears because it is the one they really wanted...

Bamamom13 08-13-2008 04:31 PM

uaMomtoo, go for Bid Day!! It is quite a sight to see. They are having brunch in the sorority houses and all parents are invited. As has been said, you will not get much time with your Daughter. She will be having lots of pictures taken and be meeting all of her pledge sisters, but it is so worth it to see the Squeal Run. The Trunk is a fabulous place to shop. They will be packed but very well stocked. You can also call them and they will make up a Bid Day Packet for your Daughter. I think they get the list of who went where before bids are even opened because they are delivering to the houses within 30 minutes of the Squeal Run. They were really nice to deal with and I have even called since, during her initiation week, and they delivered to the house then too.

Lamplighter 08-13-2008 04:41 PM

Yes, go for Bid Day (ok..I hate that...I still call it squeal day)! I promise, it is something you do not want to miss. Plus, even though you may not get to spend much time with your daughter, you'll get a chance to meet some of her new sisters, and get a feel for the house in general. Lots of other parents will be there, and you will be able to meet some of them as well. The Trunk is a great shop.

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 04:43 PM

Thank you all so much for your insight into Bid Day at BAMA! I was planning on going whether or not she got a bid. She would probably need me more if she didn't get one but I will be so excited to see her face if she does. You actually brought tears to my eyes thinking about her running to the house and being with new sisters. I hope it comes true for her.

Bamamom13 08-13-2008 04:51 PM

If your daughter does not get a bid, and I sincerely hope that she does, take her away from campus for a couple of hours. The area around sorority row, especially at Tutwiler, is not one she would want to see. It would only make her hurt more.

FreshmenDAD 08-13-2008 05:28 PM

First Cuts

My daughter spoke with me earlier today and was upset because she was cut from several sororities that she really liked but she did get invited back to 8. I know nothing about rush so this could be terrible or expected but my daughter was upset. I am somewhat surprised but I know things are tough at Bama and being from Tenn. and not knowing anyone probably hurt her. Well I am sure she will keep a positve attitude and make the best out of her opportunity.

Having 8 invites is better than 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, or NONE. Remember that there are girls who have it worse off than she is.

She'll have 8 houses to visit, so hopefully she'll have a great time despite being cut by her favorites. Good to know that she'll make the best of her situation.

KSUViolet06 08-13-2008 05:32 PM

I posted this in the Auburn thread but I thought it would be helpful if I posted it again here.

To all the worried mommies/daddies in the thread:

I think it's worth pointing out that while it's great to have a full schedule of invites, not everyone is going to have that. If your daughter happens to get less than the max number of invites everyday, try not to panic too much, because in the end, she can only get one bid (no matter how full of a schedule she has everyday). :)

In my opinion, this is something worth mentioning to your daughters, should any of them be upset by their invite list at some point.

Tex-A-Bama 08-13-2008 06:02 PM

FreshmanDAD
This is good news. She still has parties to go to.She'll find new favorites. Tell her to keep an open mind and have fun.

Titchou 08-13-2008 06:03 PM

How many could she accept? I'm not sure how many parties there are at this round.

Zillini 08-13-2008 06:07 PM

Here's a brief update. Today is the 1st half of 2nd Round/Philanthropy. As of a few minutes ago there were 1567 PNMs still registered. This year's stats won't be available for several weeks after Recruitment is completed, but the stats I have for 2000-2007 show no PNM was completely cut after Open House. So I think it's a safe assumption that these were voluntary withdrawals. We'll never know how many quit to pursue Alpha Phi; how many were cut by their favorites and weren't interested in continuing with those they were still invited to; how many simply decided Greek life was not for them; etc.

Yesterday, the 2nd half of Open House round, it was in the upper 70's to low 80's with a light but steady rain all day. For anyone not going through Recruitment it was a great day since the majority of the state has been in extreme drought conditions for over a year. I felt bad for the PNMs slogging from house to house with their umbrellas, but the rain was really needed. Today it was cloudy most of the morning and cooler than typical August, again low 80's. The sun finally broke out by midday which warmed things a bit more, but it's still down right pleasant.

PNM's can attend a max of 11 parties this round.

I don't know much about Rush either but this morning when my daughter told me how many sororities she was invited back to, one happened to be one that was on her bottom three. After today's Philanthropy Day with them she loved them! So it really pays to keep an open mind

uaMomtoo 08-13-2008 06:42 PM

oops I did something wrong in the quote....sorry

uamomma 08-13-2008 06:51 PM

first cuts

I heard from my daughter earlier today after ten but couldn't share til now (My computer denies access to GC...can't imagine why-lol) Anyway, she was tickled when she got 11 invites back for Philanthopy days. Only one house cut her (this time around) so she picked up another one. We laughed saying.."Sure are glad they had pictures and resumes(recs) to go by, because after yesterday we all looked like drownded(sp?) rats!!" Anyway, she felt really lucky(really) after talking to some of the other super awesome PNM's that she has met. I keep reminding her of what many have said...it only takes one to find a home!

Oh yeah, we are going up for bid day. I hear it's quite a spectacle!

Buttonz 08-13-2008 06:56 PM

A question about Alpha Phi & SDT:

Someone posted that after Bid Day, there will be a 3 week period of no COR so Alpha Phi can recruit. Is this for SDT as well? And did SDT take part in the first round, like I'm pretty sure they have done in the past?

I really would love to see the SDT's numbers improve.

AuburnMom08 08-13-2008 07:13 PM

Ok what the heck is Alpha Phi and why is it separate from regular rush?

And why is everyone so worried if Bama guarantees a bid anyway?

The rush is the talk of the town around here lol heard a mom talking about the AU rush at the salon yesterday and heard two mom's in the hallway at my son's doctor's appt today. The ones at the doctor's office actually had the doctor himself out in the hall telling them about how beautiful their babies probably looked doing the rush thing at "The University of Alabama" ... I'm not gonna lie, I had to roll my eyes. :)

Glad everyone here is doing well so far!

Alpha Phi: www.alphaphi.org

Alpha Phi has limited participation in recruitment because they are re-colonizing. It's pretty normal for re-colonizing chapters to hold a special recruitment for new members to get a cross section of members from all class standings, instead of the the usual freshmen and one or two upperclassmen.

From the 'Bama A Phi website: http://alphaphialabama.com/recruitme...onization.html

Quote:

Alpha Phi will hold special recruitment events for interested women following the conclusion of formal recruitment. These events will be geared toward encouraging interaction between potential new members, and sharing the details about what life in a new Alpha Phi chapter will really be like. While we know that many potential new members will find their home through the formal recruitment process, we hope that you will recognize this unique opportunity and keep Alpha Phi in mind as you make your decision about your future sorority.

Benzgirl 08-13-2008 07:26 PM

Alpha Phi is an International sorority that is new to colonize at Bama. There aere many posts on this board regarding their colonization and I suggest using the search function: http://www.alphaphi.org/

That is what the heck it is.
(If you weren't typing, I would say, "open mouth, insert foot")

AuburnMom08 08-13-2008 07:32 PM

Yikes. Sorry.
