As long as these people have a sense of identity and aren't pursuing an NPC org for the aforementioned reasons, it is what it is. It is what it is, anyway. |

I'm saying that they might feel more comfortable and at home in an NPC org. |

What's worse than educating white people on black people and basic black history is educating young adult black people on black people and basic black history. I'd rather these blacks get a clue and THEN decide whether or not the NPHC purposes of sister/brotherhood and service fit them. Plus, I've never met a black person who has never met a black person, even if they were adopted by nonblack parents or something. There are whites who have never met blacks or other nonwhites but rarely nonwhites who can say the same. |

I was like .. And then she told me which one it is, and again I was like . I never pictured her in an NPHC org. But I hope she does well and I'm eager to find out if she finally decides to pursue this org and, eventually, if she makes it in. |

Okay so what you're saying is that some of these young black people have NO IDEA about their own culture when joining? |
Just something to add here - had a friend from college and she called herself "dark skinned". She did not say she was "black" or even "African American". She was from Miami and did not live in a predominantly white area by any means. It was rather a diverse area.
She did not try to be a part of an NPC or NPHC org. Back in the day, she would have had a hard time finding a home in either. She ended up becoming a little sister to an all white fraternity and was thrilled. (I should add all types of people from various backgrounds had issues with her, no matter what she did) She even ended up marrying a white male and now lives in a predominantly white area. It is so very hard to categorize and try to analyze these things. There is no rhyme or reason to any of it. People will just be people and it is called life. You can't make everyone happy. I just wish people would be a tiny bit more understanding of things - no matter how wrong they think it is. You can beat this type of topic and it will never be over. |

Your friend is actually quite typical, even if she isn't from a predominantly white area. |
I don't know if anyone will believe me or not.
I had no interest in joining an NPHC sorority, because it didn't really occur to me to join one. I wasn't fully aware of the existance of NPHC orgs until I started reading GC. I knew there were a such thing of black orgs, but they weren't active on my campus at all (at that time). It was kind of out of sight, out of mind thing, I guess. I was non-greek the first year of college, and I knew many of the NPC/IFC greeks from class. I liked certain NPC sororities and their "brother" IFC chapters more than others, so next fall I rushed the ones I liked. But, looking back, I probably would have not joined an NPC sorority. One of the things I liked about APO (my chapter) was the diversity, and not just racial diversity, I fitted in really well. I don't think I would've fit into a typical NPC or NPHC sorority chapter, in my area. |

Blacks aren't a monolithic group. This is making my head hurt. |

Saying there is a such thing as an "XYZ culture" isn't about being a monolithic group. No matter how much you and your brother love black people (:p), you still acknowledge that you are Filipino and that there is a "Filipino and/or Filipino-American culture." This doesn't require that Filipinos think, say, and do the exact same things to recreate the culture. |
I just wonder why some Blacks are so anti for joining so called white GLOs?
It seems that there is more racism from Blacks than Whites when it comes to these situations. If you do not walk in those persons shoes, who are any to belittle them? They as an individual make their choices, not any of the posters who may want to act snide about it! People will go to where they feel at ease not because of color. |
