I'm in North Florida...also known as the boondocks. The closest Saks is probably in Jacksonville (if they have one), Atlanta, or New Orleans (if they have one). I am relegated, until I go back to Rhode Island, to do my Kate Spade (and Herve Chapelier) shopping online.

you can buy Herve Chapelier bags online?

I did't have to wait till I was 24 to get cut off from the family wallet. It's happening now at 21! No more brand name clothes at regular prices for me...it's all about the markdown at the outlet stores! I have respect for you ladies out there who can make enough to afford all this crap, and hopefully one day I'll be able to also.

Here's my list. It may sound shallow but hey, I love to shop- it's my one guilty pleasure.

*the Louis Vuitton pochette
*gold nameplate necklace
*Kate Spade sam bag
*baseball cap from Armani Exchange
*gold-and-precious-gemstone jewelry
*Polo Sport messenger bag for school
*silk scarves
*Calvin Klein jeans

Again, maybe it's shallow but I like high-quality stuff, and I bought a lot of it myself (well, except for the jewelry pieces, those were gifts).

This is a fun topic!

Calling fellow purse lovers!!

Hey have u guys checked out Monica Lewinsky's line of handbags? you can see and order at the website, www.therealmonica.com. I don't wanna bring in a debate about Monica herself but I surfed the site and was actually impressed at the beauty of the purses' designs--the prices are real pretty too lol j/k. Kinda around the Kate Spade price range, a lil cheaper maybe. Well I would give Monica props for being able to stand up proudly after such a huge "crisis". I actually plan to buy the "Southern Belle Mini Purse"...it's so petite and adorable! But gotta wait till i get paid first lol.

Wine&Blue 06-14-2001 06:05 PM

I love this thread. I have almost all of this stuff. But for you bargain shoppers... I got two "Kate Spade" Sams and the "Tiffany" bracelet from Canal Street in New York. Nobody knows they're not real! I paid $20 a piece for the Sams and $12 for the bracelet. I brought it home to have it monogrammed.

It's amazing how the campus you're at influences a chapter...most people I know wouldn't be at the school I go to if it wasn't for the scholarship they got since tuition is insanely expensive, so our necessities are a little different:

1) your sisters, of course http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

2)nice jeans for going to parties on campus and black bootcut "come get me" pants and tight tops for when you go to clubs

3) lots of friends to talk/dance with while trying to avoid the slimy middle-aged guys at these clubs

4) camera (either your own or one randomly used to take pictures with at a party - NEVER leave a camera unattended)

5) a reliable car that isn't new (less likely to get stolen/vandalized, plus you'll be less likely to care if you get dents from people attempting to park, and old cars tend to be bigger, so you can cram 8 of your closest friends in for a ride to the other side of campus)

6) a season pass to Cedar Point so you can use #5 to get out of Cleveland for a day

7) a delivery chinese food menu

8) your computer (with a working network connection since all social events are either planned through e-mail or instant messenger)

9) cell phone and pepper spray for your walks around campus at night

10) a boyfriend or a good guy friend to hang out with when all the women you live with are driving you nuts http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

11) a really good listener for when you need to talk, and a partner in crime for when you want to go out and take on the world http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

On a more personal note, my own weakness is Sephora, I love going there (but I usually end up leaving empty-handed since I can never decide what I want - there's way too much cool stuff!!!)

What is a sorority bitch bag????

gammazetagrl 07-11-2001 12:25 AM

I'm assuming the sorority bitch bag is the versatile Kate Spade SAM or whatever one purse you carry everywhere.

LoL I change purses like every other day to match my outfit though.

AOTLALA 07-13-2001 10:53 AM

Okay,at Elon College, every girl needs--
1. good color lipstick
2. a pair of good sorority block letters
3. Semi formal or mixer tee to throw on
4. Your "I LOVE AOTT(or whatever you are) pin
5. A good planner
6. a pair of black pants
7. knowledge of what is on special at every bar that night
8. knowledge of what time they start charging cover
9. and most importantly, your "girls", not neccesarily just your sorority sisters but a big group of greek women that know where every party is, every rumor spoken, have an extra set of keys to your car/house, and that you basically don't breath without

AlphaChiChristy 07-13-2001 09:32 PM

AOTLALA, you know that AXO is coming to elon? is this well accepted by other sororities and frats or not? just curious. My necessities were (i'm an alum now):

1. black pants (seems to be a recurring theme)
2. push up bra to give cleavage, but not trashy cleavage.
3. 3" chunk casual heels that look great with jeans or your black pants. make your legs look 5' tall all by themselves.
4. AXO bag (the one you carry to meetings)to have with you on campus, too.
5. Block letters to wear on Wed. (Wed. was Panhellenic letters day at my school)
6. my lavalier
7. my sisters! school would've sucked without them!

AOPIHottie 07-14-2001 09:50 PM

Hmmm, lets see....

*cute black boots to go with the sexy black pants

*comfy skechers, my addidas wind pants, and a my Theta Chi Date night t-shirt for the day-after-partying

*leopard print DARK sunglasses for trekking across campus with a *hangover*(goes with the above!)

*A cute black dress for Mondays(Chapter meeting)

*lavalier

*Your cute little PANDA bear given to you by your wonderful BIG SIS!

Rarely do I see LV around college campus- it's mostly Kate Spade or NineWest.
I do have a LV Pink Houston. The style is "vernis" which is a shiny material. It's different but very cute. I also have another LV- the original Monogram style- I rarely use it- I use my black Kate Spade Sam for everyday use.

I'm off to my first year of college and I hope to go Greek. I went to a small, private school so I'm very nervous about meeting new people and making a good first impression. Please tell me if my list is OK or if I need to do some updating! I am beside myself.
* north face backpack for main school books and notebooks.
* prada backpack, messenger bag, make up tote for "just in case" items.
* thousands of hair ties.
* a playstation 2 (I'm a tomboy at heart!).
* forties style miu miu high heels for socials (I read that look was "in").
* lip gloss!
* versatile black logo kitten heels from gucci.
* kate spade jewelry box and raincoat.
* tiffany's collection - from what I've read, I suppose that is an essential part of the sorority girl's wardrobe.
* the kate spade photo album for when i get homesick.
* louis vuitton pouchette and checkbook.
* the "bombshell manual of style" book.
* sunglasses collection.
* burberry essentials - scarves, unbrellas, mittens, you name it. A girl must always be prepared.
* louis vuitton luggage set(I don't have this though yet - its rather expensive).
* the infamous calvin klein black peacoat.
* a never-ending supply of hair straightening cream.
Please tell me what you think - I'm scared to death of being the campus dork. If you can think of anything else that could possibly work, please let me know, as well.

I have a question for all you ladies who know what's "in" and what's "out" (I am fully submerged in the "mommy" thing so I'm not completely sure what's what fasion-wise at this time)

I was going through some of my old things and I came upon my huge Louis Vuitton bag that I used to carry when I was in college (It's basically the late 80's version of the Kate Spade Sam bag). Does anyone still carry Louis Vuitton? I don't think I have seen much of it around lately. Help?

Thanks!

Hey Azelyn,
While it is ok to be well-dressed in college (no one wants to look like a slob), you probably don't want to come off as high-maintenance and overly label conscious. What school are you going to in the fall? Keep in mind that most people don't have the money to buy designer things, so you may kind of stick out if you wear all of those things at once. Don't worry so much. Be yourself and school will be fine.

Unregistered- 07-18-2001 02:18 AM

I believe your list is sufficient. You don't need most of that stuff to make a good impression (although your PS2 may help a bit http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif ). I can honestly say that most of us don't even own half of the things on your list...but hey--I bet we wouldn't mind having them.

Good luck on Fall Recruitment and keep us updated!

About the PS2 and other expensive items, be careful if you're staying in a dorm. After a while you'll get cozy, leave your room unlocked "just for a minute", and things can/will get stolen. My (GDI) friends who lived in the dorms went room to room trying doors, if the doors were unlocked they'd raid the fridge looking for beer. Getting a few beers stolen sucks, but what if the person stealing sees that PS2 and decides to take it too? That'd suck beyond words. Be careful, lock your door, and write down the serial numbers from all electronic equiptment. Good luck!
Heidi

twinstars 07-18-2001 11:17 AM

yeah really, what school will you be attending? i'm curious. it sounds like with that list, you'd be overdoing it almost anywhere you went. you don't want to come across as overly prissy and label-conscious. i don't know if i'd necessarily be "impressed" by a freshman girl who felt the need to wear thousands of dollars worth of clothes and jewelry at one time on a day-to-day basis. you don't want to "flaunt" your money even if you have lots of it. i'd be way more impressed with a girl who obviously was loaded but didn't feel the need to push it in everyone's face all the time with designer EVERYTHING. i go to a small private school and even the ladies in the "most upper-crust" sorority don't seem as obsessed with labels as you might be. just relax a little. it's ok to wear j.crew sometimes, really. realize that you might not necessarily put across a positive first impression by spending tons of money on labels. people might actually feel threatened and resent you.

Whoah, simma there, sweetie

Listen, the first year of college is a major transition in one's life. And I can imagine how you are stressing about your first impressions. I spent hours before each night of rush figuring out what to wear. But you know something? The girls in the chapter never once said anything about clothes or makeup or anything. We talked about our travels and awards in school and what was most important to us, etc. Trust me, looks may grab, but personality holds. Just relax. College is the most amazing time of your life. Four years of learning and growing in an environment with 1000's of new people. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your list if that is what makes YOU happy and comfortable. But make sure that your wonderful and classy personality compliments your stellar wardrobe. What these girls look for is how you act at parties prior to and during rush for the most part. Because if you are puking at every party and seen going upstairs with different boys every hour it does not reflect well on your charachter. I am sure that you are not this type of girl though, so no worries http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. Besides, if all we cared about was what you wear, we could just do a lineup of girls and select new members. But we really want to meet you! And remember that everyone kinda starts from scratch in college as far as reputations go, so take this opportunity to let your true self shine through and meet all the new amazing kids in the dorm from all over the country and even world. You will not be a dork. Swear. No one is a "dork" in college, they are just considered "independent and individualistic." Haha.

gammazetagrl 07-18-2001 02:08 PM

well, you can pick up a lot of guys just by mentioning you have a PS2 in your dorm room! j/k.

But seriously, the day we moved in, after my (first) roomie and i got our stuff settled, we set up the tv, her dreamcast, my (regular)playstation and n64, and decided to play a couple rounds of Street Fighter. We left the door halfway open as we played and of course needless to say we had our new male neighbors see us, drop by, and play with us http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Heidi is right about stuff getting stolen. I forgot to add this to my reply and it may sound stupid but you'll realize how many college kids in the dorms actually forget to do this....close and lock the door when taking a nap or going to sleep!!!a guy on the 11th floor of my dorm woke up to find his ps2 and n64 stolen just because he was watching tv and the door was open. later he fell asleep...and this happened in the middle of the afternoon!

Wow, I have definitely lived a sheltered life. My freshman year, and even now at the house, I left my door open and unlocked all the time, except for when both myself and my roommate were leaving for more than 12 hours. Theft is not a problem on our campus, and EVERYONE at least has 2 laptops in their room, along with video games, dvd players, vcr's, tv's refridgerators, microwaves, stereos, desktop computers, etc. depending on the people. I think something like 5 laptops have been stolen and 3 cars broken into in my three years at Rose, of course it's a private school, not in town, and most everything is set back off the main road it's on a good ways.

Every sorority girl needs lip gloss. Also Sex and the City on DVD(great fashions). A pair of comfort clothes and a pint of ice cream for the days we just want to chill with our sorority sisters bc we are depressed, lonely, hate men, or want to hang with our girls because we love them-NO boys allowed!

AlphaChiChristy 07-19-2001 12:29 AM

Azelyn,
I know that you've had everyone on here reply to your query, but I'm going to, too! First of all, everyone's right. Be yourself. You SHOULD look nice at rush, because first impressions last, but that doesn't mean that you need to wear particular labels. Look nice in what you're comfortable in. As for the rest of rush, WHO you are (not what label you wear)is what will get you in a sorority. What label you wear might determine which of your sisters you shop with, but not which letters you'll wear! Enjoy rush and focus on the experience. Take the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Just because you join one chapter doesn't mean you can't have friends in another. Some of the girls you'll be closest to during rush will go to different houses. Also - big advice - don't choose your chapter by which one your best friend is going to. Choose the one you'll feel most comfortable in. If you two are good enough friends, your letters won't affect the friendship.
Anyway. The point is, have fun! These really are the best years of your life!

Thank you so much for writing me back everyone! I really, really appreciate it! I'm (obviously) very nervous. I'm going to Miami of Ohio and I have no idea what to expect. I certainly don't want to flaunt anything or stand out! All I want is to fit into the big puzzle - I'm just kinda oblivious as to who and what is in the puzzle. From what I understand now (rather than a few years ago) I live in a bubble.
I don't want to lose my identity, but I don't want to repel anyone or hit any limitations on friendships. I really just want to fit to the norm -
I guess my list of stuff is actually very very shallow but I guess I'm just used to an environment where people are judged on what they have, not who they are (sad, but true). In hopes of breaking that line of thinking, I want Miami to be a clean slate in a way. I have a bit of a better idea of what to expect now - everyone thank you so much - your advice has been a breath of fresh air! XOXOXOXO

I'm a Cincinnatian born & raised, and tons of people from my HS go to Miami. I don't think there's anywhere to buy some of the labels you mentioned around here. My impression of Miami had always been Abercrombie, J Crew & Banana Republic. A preppy casual sort of look. I could be generalizing too much and you may know more about the atmosphere than I do, but I think you may be going too high end.

First, let me say that the lists I have read have definitely been wish lists for almost every woman in the world! I mean, who doesn't want tons of money to spend on jewelry, clothes, etc. I am a big shopper myself, but I ALWAYS buy on sale and look for imitations. When I was in high school I wasted my money on a lot of expensive clothes because I just couldn't wait for them to go on sale. I still love name brand clothes, but I've learned to wait until they're marked down. Plus, there are lots of things that I know I could never afford even if they were marked down, so I look for the imitation. For instance:

The infamous Tiffany heart bracelet and necklace? I got the bracelet at B.Moss for $4.99 and the necklace at Lerner for $7.00.

The BEBE pants? Lerner, Express, and Limited on sale for $15.

Dark denim jeans and jean jacket? Old Navy, where everything is ALWAYS cheap and quality made.

You can always look like a million bucks for under $50. Old Navy, Target, TJ Maxx...really, if someone cares whether or not you're wearing a "name tag," are they worth being friends with anyway? Trust me, I've taught myself how to manage MY money (emphasis on MY) and learned just how far it can go.

As far as "must-haves" go, I feel like these are two very important things that EVERY girls should have....

1)Close friendships with both your sisters and friends OUTSIDE of your chapter and Greek life. I love my sisters, but sometimes I need to hang out with people that I don't have to discuss DZ with. Anyone else feel this way?
2)Your own personality and a strong sense of who you are. If you're not a strong person when you join, chances are people are going to make you into someone you don't want to be. I've seen this happen way too many times to girls in other chapters and a couple in my own.

For the superficial "must-haves," we all have those, too...

1)Gray New Balance Tennis shoes
2)Dark denim jeans
3)Our favorite stores: Old Navy, American Eagle, B.Moss, Lerner, Limited, Gap
4)Yes, we all have the black pants
5)Black leather jacket
6)Windpants...name brand or not, who cares?
7)College and sorority sticker on the back window of your car...whatever car you can afford. Who cares as long as it gets you from A to B, and you can cram several sisters in it!
8)Pullover jackets with letters on them
9)Lavaliere
10) Long sleeve t-shirts of ANY kind
11) Several pair of every day jeans and khakis
12) Warm jacket, gloves, hat, and boots...it snows a lot
13) LL Bean monogrammed backpack
14) Flip Flops...once again, Old Navy, $3.50
15) White dress...is there such a thing as a pretty one?
16) A best guy friend, usually your big brother, (even if you have a boyfriend) because sometimes you need a guy's perspective

To the girl attending college in the fall...I don't know anything about Miami of Ohio, but I do know that college is NOTHING like high school. You are free to be whatever you want to be. I loved high school, but I love college even more. You'll learn to be a free thinker and do whatever makes YOU happy. Don't worry about what other people think. We all had the same fear you did when we entered college--but being superficial will hurt more than it helps. Girls and guys will be put off by it and will think you're snobby whether you are or not. Enjoy yourself, and let people see that!

Sorry this is so long, but this is the first time I read this thread and I just had a lot to say!
