We weren't actually named after the animal, we were named (I don't remember the exact story, so forgive me) after the miners who originally settled in southern Wisconsin -- they found that the best homes were dugouts in the hills, and soon after that people started referring to them as "badgers."

Here's a little bit of Bucky Badger history for you:
http://www.uwbadgers.com/traditions/bucky_badger.aspx

Other Big Ten mascots:
Does anybody know exactly what a Nittany Lion is?
When I was little, I accidentally referred to Purdue's mascot as "the Waterheaters" instead of "the Boilermakers."

In high school our mascot was "the purgolder" . . . I still don't know what that is. I can top that, though -- a nearby high school's athletic teams were known as "the goslings," i.e., the baby geese. Intimidating! But best of all was my middle school mascot. I went to Georgia O'Keeffe Middle School -- our mascot was "the Fighting Iris." You know, like the Notre Dame mascot, only Georgia O'Keeffe was famous for painting flowers, so . . .? Super-lame . . . but funny.

Are you talking about Watertown with the Goslings? GPBoy went to school there and I tease him for it all the time! My college mascot is a Pioneer, only there is no actualy costumed mascot, just a big blue and orange P. Yippee. Next year, however, I will be a Golden Eagle when I transfer. :)

White_Chocolate 01-23-2003 10:23 PM

My high school was Cairo High School pronounced K-ro. We were the Cairo Syrupmakers. Our mascot was a syrup pitcher.

My first college was Valdosta State Blazers. A ball of fire!!!

The school I'm at now is Grenadier. WHAT THE HELL IS A GRENADIER??!?!

WingNut 01-24-2003 12:53 AM

My college mascot is a donkey with a stick of dynamite in it's mouth, named Blaster. We made a golden colored idol of him for our homecoming float two years ago and simply referred to it as the Brass Ass.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-24-2003 02:10 AM

They changed my college mascot since I was there so I won't get into that one.

My private school's mascot is the griffin. It would have been nice to have a mascot that you could see at a zoo. :p

White_Chocolate 01-24-2003 12:59 PM

but who the hell wants to go to college with fifty other people who were lions, tigers, and bears(. . .oh my)!

i like the diversity. it sure makes it easier to remember.

however, i like the mascots that are non-animals or a conglomeration of words. . .

purdue boilermakers. . .a train. . .toot-toot
OU Sooners. . .
Aggies
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay Mutiny

it makes you wonder who was puffing on some buddha when they were putting the teams together. . .

We are the dayton flyers but our mascot is Rudy....it is a cross between super man and the red barren. He has a really big head and chin. It's a little creppy if you as me. I don't know what they were thinking...

Yeah, Watertown is the Goslings! I ran cross-country and track in high school, and we'd always have at least a couple meets at Watertown -- and every single time we'd make fun of the mascot. Not that ours was much better, but still . . . who'd be scared of the Goslings?

MoxieGrrl 01-24-2003 04:25 PM

I remember reading a while back about a school who had to change their mascot.....they were the Devil's Lake Satans. Now how's that for an intimidating school mascot? :p

Aah that's so awesome - where did you go? We could have ran against each other - we had a lot of meets with Waterhole as well! :D

GP Boy is angry we are making fun of his beloved Goslings again. ;)

Richard Stockton College- Ospreys

An Osprey is a large fish eating hawk...it was endangered when the school was founded in the 1970's...thats what you get when the school is founded by hippies.:D

trisigmaAtl 05-22-2003 12:17 AM

The Oglethorpe University mascot is: The Stormy Petrel

that being: A small yet diligent sea bird whos oily feathers where set afire by ancient mariners because the birds would always fly through the storm towards land. The mariners would follow the flaming bird to shore

yeah...go petrels!! (it's also idiosyncratically pronounced pea-trel on campus instead of petrel)

I know a guy whos highschool mascot was the spoof-hound
I do not know what a spoof hound is.

carnation 05-22-2003 11:52 AM

Every school I've taught at has played Oglethorpe and you don't KNOW how hard it is to fit "Stormy Petrels" into an anti-other-school cheer!

PrincessHeather 05-22-2003 12:55 PM

Ok mine isn't unusual as a stormy petrel or anything but I have a story that makes you go:

Here at CSU Stanislaus we are the Warriors. (Very common) BUT the little mascot that runs around campus is a hawk type bird.
There is no explanation for it but people see the "bird" and are like, 'wait I thought you were the warriors'... Yup we are.

We all think some one made a boo boo when ordering the mascot costume.

Ok sorry for the mini hijack you all can go back to talking about stormy petrels. hee hee

You're welcome! COOL! I saw Pulp Fiction the other day, and that banana slug shirt just made me smile. :)

trisigmaAtl 05-23-2003 01:13 AM

Carnation,

it's just as hard to think up go stormy petrel cheers!!!!!
(I think, I don't make it to that many sporting events, we're not a very athletic school)

however, it's always nice to mention your school and not have someone say "Ogle-what?":D

Rose&WhiteGirl 07-15-2003 11:13 AM

There is a small town near Purdue named Frankfurt, IN and their high school mascot is the Hotdogs. Try that one on for size ;)

enlightenment06 07-15-2003 01:36 PM

At GW our main mascots are renditions of George Washington. Our unofficial mascot is a Hippo.

IHeartAXO 07-15-2003 05:09 PM

Ooh! I've got some good ones.

My friend went to Harpeth Hall in Nashville (where Reese Witherspoon went) and their mascot was a HONEYBEAR! I love it. :)

I have a friend at Williams. They are the Ephs (sometimes Ephmen and Ephwomen), but are mostly known as the Purple Cow.

My dad went to Trinity College (a Bantam.. what IS that?) and UVA. UVA is officially the Cavaliers (still bad), but are also well known as the Wahoos. Umm... what?!

I'm a Trojan. And the other USC (South Carolina) are similar colors and the Gamecocks. Trojans and Cocks... hmmmmm.

For those of you whom did not go way way way back::

Pittsburg State U. (kansas) "Gus The Gorilla"

Now I migh add what the F**k is a Gorilla doing in SE Kansas:confused:

sherbertlemons 07-15-2003 10:53 PM

We're the Knights, and our mascot's name is Knightro. His girlfriend's name is Glycerin.

Baby4538 07-16-2003 12:25 AM

Furman University's is the Paladins, better known as a knight commissioned during the reign of Charlemagne. I get asked all the time, Wha' the hayle is a PALADIN? It's cool tho, because we have a man in full body armor riding a white horse on the sidelines during football games.

SniffDNZ098 07-16-2003 06:21 AM

Our Mascot is a Highlander...Some Scottish Guy. Remember WillIam Wallace from Braveheart? Our Motto is Braveheart is Alive

UC Riverside...

btw also they get some type of bear from Highlander...

KSigkid 07-16-2003 08:51 AM

I might have already posted in this thread....but it's too early to remember.

Boston University's mascot is the Terrier...yes, a little yappy dog. Not exactly a mascot that will strike fear into anyone.

adpishan 07-19-2003 10:03 PM

Okay... I am a Runnin' Rebel, our mascot is called "Hey Reb"
I was thinking of going to a school in Washington State (small dance college) and their mascot is the Cornish Game Hen... yeah, the things you eat...
And in the Mtn. West division we have the Wyoming Cowboys and the Utah Utes... if anyone knows what a Ute is, could you please let me know... ;)

History of Utes

And what's so odd about Cowboys? :)

KS 361 times i was given grief from my mother for getting a C in my History of Native Americans class

PiEp299 07-23-2003 10:12 AM

I've got a couple:

Delta State University's mascot is the Fighting Okra

Arkansas Tech's mascot is the Wonderboys for the guys - because they won a football game 84 years ago that means absolutely nothing, but they still think it does.

Sports Illustrated did an article a couple of years back with the top 10 strangest college mascots. My school was #2 (and I think still remains in that spot), behind the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. I went to Oglethorpe University where we were the Stormy Petrels. Apparently a petrel was a seagull-like bird which had oily skin and sailors used to set them on fire and follow them as they flew through storms to find their way. Hence why they're extinct. Anyhow, the mascot we have looks like a seagull standing up with a puffed-up chest. I was a college cheerleader and there is nothing harder than that first season when you realize you sound like an idiot yelling "Go Stormy Petrels"! There's been talk of ESPN airing a baseball or basketball game between us and UCSC since we have the #1 and #2 strangest mascots. Would love to see that! :) haha
