I don't have Starz, so I usually just buy the Blu-Rays after they come out, but I am even behind on those.

Yes, I remember seeing it somewhere before that she was a ZTA at Michigan State.

Sciencewoman 08-08-2018 10:11 PM

This is absolutely true. We talked about this in another thread the year she joined. My sister and cousin are alumnae of the MSU Zeta chapter, and my sister was chapter advisor for 3 years.

I was told that she went though recruitment using a pseudonym to keep her father's fame from influencing her recruitment. IDK if that part is true or not.

AGDee 08-08-2018 10:29 PM

Maria Shriver's son Christopher is in a Fraternity at the University of Michigan but she didn't say on the radio which one. She talked about him bringing home fraternity brothers to the family home in California for spring break. And she visits him regularly there. He started the year after Madonna's daughter and Mario Batali's son did (same year Eminem's daughter started at MSU). I was hoping Madonna or Mario would be at parent's orientation that year, but they weren't in my session. LOL

Eminem's daughter being a ZTA was in the news at the some point, I think, but it's common knowledge in Michigan.

Having to fix this because I was thinking Patrick and it's Christopher.

Patrick is a Lambda Chi Alpha from USC (that famous kid school apparently). Can't find Christopher's affiliation but was sure Maria was talking about it on a radio show. I'll keep hunting.

Ava Sambora, daughter of Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear, is an Alpha Phi from Loyola Marymount University. (She has all sorts of pictures with her sisters on Instagram)

Paige Drummond, daughter of Food Network host, “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond is going to school at University of Arkansas.
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/tear...210511533.html
Ree just dropped her off so Paige is most likely going through Recruitment (as it starts 8/11).
Will have to see if she goes to one of her legacy houses — mom/Pi Phi or older sister/DDD.

ChioLu 08-17-2018 11:58 AM

Cole Swindell was on the Today Show this morning and a Sig undergrad asked if Cole would sign his Sigma Chi flag. Hoda Kota (DDD) was surprised and said “I knew there was a connection between us. I was a Sigma Chi Lil Sis.” Then they had a little hug.

Earlier this week on the Today Show, a woman was holding a sign with Hoda’s name but it was spelled with three Delta’s in the middle. Cute.

I am also curious about this! My daughter is really hoping she goes Pi Phi. Ree posted pictures of her other daughter's Bid Day (she was there), so I'm hoping she does the same. I also love how the older daughter Alex has worn a variety of Tri Delta t-shirts during episodes in which she has appeared the past couple years.

Ree Drummond posted on her instagram story that Paige has joined Kappa. Congrats to her family and Kappa!

ChioLu 08-26-2018 04:07 PM

Per TX State Senator Wendy Davis on Twitter, her daughter is a DG (now graduate) from Duke, and Wendy gave the DG Lecture on Leadership and Ethics there this weekend. (Wendy Davis recently ran for governor of Texas and is a rising political star.)

Speaking of governors, Ohio’s governor John Kasich said a couple of weeks ago on TV that he was taking his daughters to college. He has twin daughters, Emma and Reese. From Instagram, Reese goes to Columbia College (no NPCs), but it looks like Emma is a new Tri Delta at Clemson.

Yesterday's episode was a tribute to Ree's mother-in-law Nan Drummond, who passed away in May. She was a Kappa Alpha Theta, initiated at Oklahoma State. So, Paige is a legacy to Theta, Pi Phi, and Tri Delta and added another NPC branch to the family tree.

Christine Blasey Ford is a Kappa Delta from UNC, but I can't link to the NY Times article that mentions it, because I've used up my 10 free articles this month.

Hazel Rutherford McCuaig, daughter of the first premier of Alberta Alexander Rutherford, was a Pi Phi.

(She was also, I'm told, a strong advocate for Greek life at UAlberta but the only sources I have for that are anecdotes so feel free to take it with a grain of salt.)

The US Senator Mitch McConnell. Ha!

Not my sorority, but it was fun to read that Dorcas Reilly, the inventor of that green bean casserole that probably everyone's eaten at one time or another, was an ASA: http://www2.philly.com/philly/obitua...-20181023.html.

This article is also interesting because it shows her original notes from the testing process.

Female presidential candidates

Now that the 2020 election is (already) heating up, here are three democratic presidential candidates with greek affiliations: Kamala Harris, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Elizabeth Warren, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kirsten Gillibrand, Kappa Kappa Gamma.

This site has a rather extensive list of greek women that have served in the United States Senate: https://www.franbecque.com/female-se...-2017-edition/ At the top of the page, there are also multiple headings to click for other groupings of famous sorority women.
Looking through some of the other lists, I see that Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a member of AEPhi, and my own Kansas governor Laura Kelly was a KU Pi Phi.

Can anyone help with this one? Linda Ellerbee was a reporter for NBC, and appeared in several of their online news magazines. Younger GCers will know her from Nick News on Nickelodeon.

In her autobiography, "And So It Goes", she mentions that she joined a sorority at Vanderbilt. This was in the early 60s, as she dropped out of Vandy in '64 to get married. I've tried to look it up, but have never found the answer.

BTW, if you can get a hold of a copy of "And So It Goes", it is great reading. Especially what it was like to be a female reporter in the early '70s.

She likely would have been initiated as Linda Jane Smith. I checked the Pi Phi database and could not find her. Alas, if she resigned her membership she would not be in the database members can check.

She does not appear the the Gamma Phi Beta database either. Gamma Phi Beta was at Vanderbilt from 1924-1998.

honeychile 03-23-2019 06:45 PM

Alpha Delta Pi hadn't chartered its Vanderbilt chapter at that time.

There's a Linda Smith on the AOII pages in the 1963 Vandy yearbook .

Sophia Umansky, daughter of RHoBH Kyle Richards is a KKG. On her instagram, she says she lives in D.C., and thru a little more digging, it looks like she goes to George Washington University.
This is her dorm room: https://www.bravotv.com/the-real-hou...glam-dorm-room

Side note: someone I follow on Twitter retweeted a post from her mom, saying that Sophia had a 106 degree temperature and is in the hospital. Prayers for her.

Another daughter, Alexia Umansky, is an Alpha Phi at Arizona (now alumna).

Kyle’s oldest daughter, Farrah Aldjufrie (from her 1st marriage), started at NYU in 2006, then transferred (2008) & graduated at USC, but I haven’t found a sorority affiliation.

Kyle’s youngest daughter, Portia Umansky, was born in 2008, so she won’t be starting college until at least 2026.

According to IMDb (as I don’t watch the show), all of her daughters have appeared many times on RHoBH.

Bob Weir of Grateful Dead has a daughter that joined Alpha Phi.

It's fun to peruse old fraternal National Alumnae Directories and find the names of celebrities/near-celebrities you never knew were members of your college greek organization. Interestingly, some of these celebrities have never been very public about their greek affiliation.

Looking-up names of people who live/have lived in your hometown, or perhaps noting a previous owner of your current home, in same directories is often enlightening. It was in an old alumnae directory that I discovered one of my HS teachers and her twin were both members of my sorority!

Michigan’s Fall Recruitment goes from Sept 14 - 17 (upperclass only).
Spring Recruitment goes from Jan. 7 - 19 (day before classes start and weekends)

As for the article’s last line about Malia, it might be a challenge for her to join at Harvard ... because, well, Harvard.

Gabrielle Carteris, Xi Alpha (University of Colorado Boulder) is a special initiate of Phi Mu. Her younger daughter is also a Phi Mu from the same chapter.

Talked to the House Director at USC KKG this week and here are more celebrity daughters in this chapter:
Catherine Bach (“Daisy Duke” from “The Dukes of Hazzard” and now on the soap opera “Y & R”) - her daughter is a member. (On “The Young and the Restless”, the actress who plays her daughter, Melissa Claire Egan, is a Chi Omega alumna.)
Blair Underwood (“LA Law”, “Sex and the City”) - his daughter is a new member
Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith - daughter, Stella, is now a KKG alumna and graduated in 2018

Rachel Lindsay, previous lead on The Bachelorette and now a correspondence for the TV show Extra, is a Delta Sigma Theta.

Saw this earlier in the thread. I disagree. The list that my national fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) includes in the pledge manual has about 20 people on it and does include honorary members. I've spent approximately the last 10 years creating a larger list (about 400 entries) on Wikipedia with references to newspapers, university yearbooks, university archives, Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities and similar secondary and tertiary sources as well as back issues of the national fraternity magazine.

My national fraternity has made the decision that they aren't going to put alumni who have passed away prior to creating the computer system on the computer database (so there are brothers who were part of the founding chapter during the time that the youngest of the founders were still there aren't accessible electronically).

My extreme example here is President Eisenhower. He isn't listed on the national website *other* than a convention proposal for the national office to make a list of our National Honorary Members. (and for which the list was pulled from the Wikipedia article in question!). The reason that President Eisenhower is on that list from wikipedia is that the fact that he is an honorary member is in an article in the New York Times! (https://www.nytimes.com/1957/05/07/a...fraternal.html) (and also confirmed from the national fraternity magazine at the time)
