We'll restart this:
I have searched google, I have searched this website, how does stepping have anything to do with founders ideals. Since I do not know any black greeks except for the ones I helped chaperone at a party (Q-Dawg Toga, all-greek unity party (except it was only black greeks not others)), and they can't answer my question I decided to ask ya'll. I'll claim ignorance just so I can get an answer P.S. Why is APhiA Ice Cold? Was their founding in New York? |

Where did anyone say that stepping had anything to do with their founders ideals? Or is this just an idea that you cleverly came up with? Does everything that you and your org does have something to do with your founders' ideals? |

I'm pleased to find two of my favorite people up in here. {{{REDS6}}}{{{LADYGREEK}}} Starang21 doesn't count b/c he's stankadank. |

When white fraternity men began singing and serenading women back in the day, which prompted BGLO men to do the same and add dance steps to it, I wonder if that was based on the white fraternity men's founders' ideals. I don't really wonder, but I pretend to wonder. |

Does everything that you and your org does have something to do with your founders' ideals? (this is a quote from jubilance1922 about elaphantwalk's comment) I don't know how to take out a certain section of the quote. My reponse below Jubilance1922.

This thread had been dormant for 3 days for a reason. ;)

Because the "wearing your letters" thread is more interesting then a movie about dancing.

A symbol without substance
I think that when people don't pledge/or are taken through the "intake" process, they miss the true power of what it means to step. To truly appreciate the power of that action, one must understand the power of the emotion that is supposed to be associated with it. I think too, to have made a movie about it is irresponsible and potentially harmful if the producer doesn't highlight some of the work associated with what it means to be a Bruh or a Soror, and, I think that it would be smart if the film showcases the tribal history associated with stepping and what tribal dance, a centuries old form of communication and precursor to stepping is really all about. Do I think its cool to produce a movie about it? Hell naw. I think that the de-mystification of the pledging process has only succeeded to disempower the spirit of the journey and it has taken with it, the distinct art of what it means to step. Hollywood doesn't need to make a movie about everything and I'm embarrassed that a member of Alpha Phi Alpha has anything to do with it, though, I understand his right to project his opinion and thought in any form he chooses, I just hope that stepping doesn't become a symbol without substance.

I repeat, this movie is horrid. To think that the fraternity system will be presented to the public as minorities dancing their way through college called stepping. It makes me sick. I have a good fraternity movie....I think its called, The Birth of a Nation? HAHAHAHA

hmmmmm....
Before I begin, I want to say that we should probably hold off judging this movie until we see it. I would hope that this film wouldn't minimalize such an important part of our culture for a little change in some pockets, but who knows... Hopefully it will be like School Daze where some parts were super exaggerated, but we understood the underlying message (hopefully this movie has a message).
I'm sort of happy that Elephant Walk is asking questions. I think he may be coming off as rude and attempting to downplay or belittle what we do because he's frustrated and he actually WANTS to understand but we aren't willing to actually sit down and spoon feed, which is what we need to do. I wish more white greeks asked questions. Then maybe they would have more respect for the culture and customs of BGLOs because we ARE unique in every sense of the word. With that said, it may behoove you, Elephant Walk, to read this short paper on the african roots of stepping written by a professor of history at Virginia Tech. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss things further. www.ipsonet.org/congress/5/papers_pdf/hwf.pdf HOWEVER, some questions (like the one asked about why the Alphas are ice cold) aren't answered because they're a secret known to members of the frat or sorority ONLY. Don't be offended if you don't get an answer to everything because I'm a black greek and I can't get an answer to everything either. Real talk to all my brothers and sisters of BGLOs, it's time out for all this "go find out yourself" stuff cuz this movie is about to blow open a whole 'nother door and unless you want this to happen, http://www.utm.edu/departments/univr...epShow2006.php at places other than greek unity step shows, then we need to be answering questions IN DEPTH. Take it all the way back to Africa BEFORE slavery even began if need be! I go to Michigan State where our yard shows used to get shut down BEFORE they even got started good because the white cops just saw a bunch of black people congregated and just KNEW that that had to mean trouble. It actually took some members of Phi Beta Sigma to go up to the police station, do a yard show, and EXPLAIN what and why they were doing what they were doing for the police to leave us the hell alone. Now they just sit in their cars at the shows just in case something happens. That's sad, but it is what it is. Love You Guys! :) |
Thank you, that was the response I was looking for but never got.
In my hometown, we have one of the biggest step shows in the South, from what I understand. Every year in April, blacks flock to my hometown... it gets pretty busy for a town of 50,000. I never honestly understood it, the step show was only a small part of the big party. |
Well alriiiiighty then.............
There's so much wrong with that post. |

Soror, I understand what you are saying but people on this board are GROWN a$$ men & women, we shouldnt have to spoon feed anyone. Anything worth having is worth working for.. There is to much information available out there for people who REALLY want to know. Just like they are on here posting, they can click on Google and find just about anything they want to know. Moreso, they can click on GC search, and find several threads related to the same thing they are inquiring about. |
Okay, whose alter ego is this? Oh an Ejay (if that is really your name,) if you believe that the internet is about confidentiality you are in for a rude awakening. LOL

P.S. Ejay, to say all of that about Black greeks was sort of EXTRA....lol. Like I know there are some of us that are siditty to say the least, but the ones who live up to the true principles of their respective orgs far outnumber the others.

Soror, I see that you are a rather new initiate. I would just like to let you know that there are certainly reasons why people respond to GC members such as elephant walk the way that they do. If you would just take a moment and review the types of posts, insults and other types of comments made by elephant walk in particular, you would possibly understand more clearly why many on the site don't have patience for his so-called "questions". On a broader note, which is why I referenced your being a new initiate, you will learn as you grow in our sorority that there are various experiences throughout all of our lives as Deltas and members of other bglos that prompt certain responses. Things aren't very different on this site. I, too, have seen members of our organizations go overboard in their reactions to inquiries posed by other organizations' members, but the more you get around and interact with people as a member of this or any other organization, you will see why some feel the need to simply ask curious people to look various bit of information up on their own. Welcome to Delta and have a good one. |

Yes, I'm new, but even if I wasn't I'm almost positive I wouldn't understand why it was so bad for me to give him a link to a paper. That's the type of person I am and have always been.....a teacher. I mean, I understand that after a while you probably get tired of answering certain crap over and over again, but what he wanted to know wasn't a trivial matter. I read all of his previous posts and yes he WAS rude as I previously stated, but I still wanted him to get informed. Maybe I'm too nice. I was just trying to help him out. It's cool though. I'm off it.
|
Oooooooo i get it now. I thought she was only talking about his posts on this thread. My bad. But still...patronize me for being new to GC, not for being a new initiate. I'm kind of offended. Still off it though!

This may've been said to you already but, Soror, when you get more time in Delta you will learn that every inquiry isn't a genuine one. Our charge as Deltas isn't to jump whenever people say "jump." I can't count how many times someone has come to me with a question that technically COULD or even SHOULD be answered, but they came at me wrong or in an inappropriate environment. If someone is curious they won't phrase their curiosity in a demeaning or belittling manner like Elephant Man started this thread. |

I heard "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" just now. |
Did anyone else happen to catch the BET special about the movie tonight? Some of the actors talked about the greek life that is portrayed in the movie, saying that they learned a lot about it through making the movie. They spoke about the lifetime committment and also how stepping is only one aspect of being greek and that's not what it is all about. Now this is on the special so I don't know how acurately this thought will be portrayed in the movie...but I just wanted to know if anyone else saw the show and what your thoughts were...
