what is a fraternity?

us old folks think fondly of fraternity as it was; what it may be today in your minds is sometimes another matter. To me, a
fraternity is a place, generally with a house, where men live in
fraternal harmony and have a social program plus other interests.
Later arrivals want to be like the "old fraternity" but do not have
the commitment to come forth with the full measure.
Perhaps we ought to re-define fraternity...
I bet that Beta or SAE has their APO shingle hanging on the wall of their principal fraternity. Gosh, my Alpha Theta Rho art fraternity, which was co-ed, had a picnic yearly and the Poly Sci
Pi Sigma Alpha a banquet and Sigma Delta Pi spanish one had a
chili feed. But that does not necessarily fulfill a description of what a fraternity is. Betas made grades, played IMs, dated girls,
had parties, exchanges, work weeks, public service, rush parties,
leadership schools while the other groups played cards in the union. Most of us belonged to various professional or honorary or
some type of club, but it was hardly comparable to what we called a fraternity. You can call these wannabes anything you want to, you can pretend you are really doing something. You can
even install a urinal in the Pi Phi house. You are a sniveling lot of
folks, but within this hoi-polloi lies some good ones, too. I prefer
to communicate to them, and the rest of you...well, potrzebie

16 years old or younger.

Thats about the age people are supposed to start achieving the detachment necessary to seperate their extreme emotion from the basis and substance of their arguments.

This is not directed at Ladygreek or anyone actually. I just saw this post and wanted to respond.

To take it a step further. I am not sure how it was with anyone else growing up, but losing self control or blasting people in a moment of pique was not only never lauded, it was never explained to me that it would be admirable to do so when we grow up.

Edited for some spelling.

define showing extreme emotion. because someone decides to chide an unintelligent individual or gets angry at the extreme ignorance shown on this site by numerous individuals, they're acting immature? last time i checked, no one has tried to stifle the anyone else's free speech with the exception of the moderators. hardly what i'd call that. obviously, you're lost on the concept of an internet message board.

spare us the irrelevant speech on messageboard "etiquette". unless someone on here is making asbestos death threats over the internet, the point of this post is truly lost because of it's uselessness.

if you feel that the discussion is heated, have someone delete the thread or don't click on it. problems always resolved that way. to take it a step further, i'd say that most people have a decent amount of self control on this site unless they're cussing up a storm about how they're going to beat someone's behind upon site. if you don't feel that way, you can always click the little red x at the upper right hand corner of your screen.

feminine emotions? explain. if not, spare me your psycho babble bullshit and stop trying to make every one of your posts some kind of dissertation.
you act like some high and mighty being when, in fact, you are just a simple little person that likes to hear the sound of their own voice....or in this case.....the look of their own words.

half of the stuff I post is meant to see how people like you react. i might be truthful in the posts, but i could definitely word them differently if it weren't so damned funny to see all the reactions.

just because you're not intelligent enough to hang, not my problem. welcome to the real world, twit...where people can actually articulate their thoughts without turning to racial slurs everytime they see fit. it's a wonder that you were even able to gain acceptance into a university let alone pledge a fraternity with your piss poor logical thought process.

but i do find it funny, that you throw those around "just to see how people react." then nut up like a 4 year old girl when someone asks you to reiterate. the funniest reaction of all are yours, and i do find it funny when i see you backpeddling because someone didn't want to overlook your extreme stupidity and ignorance.

what do you want me to reiterate....lets hear it? i dont remember anyone asking me that. i am perfectly ingtelligent enough to hang with you squirt. you bring up the exact same demeaning excuse for and insult every time you respond to me. you are unoriginal. well sister, I did get into the university of my choice....as well as ivy leagues and all of the other schools that I applied to. somehow, I even managed to get into a top tier fraternity, make very good grades, and then get into every law school that i applied to......even though my logic is shot.

so again.....tell me what you want to hear, becuase I don't know when I ever nutted up like a four year old girl.

so did the dubya, but i'd hardly call that any natural ability. maybe it's something in the water down there, lol. i don't need to hear anything, twit....the proof is in the pudding and your post history. but i do find it funny how you want to explain your "accomplishments" to everyone at the first drop of hat whenever someone decides to clown you.

See, its dumb shit like that. you make these overdone posts questioning my ability to restate my opinions and then when I give you the chance to ask something, you pull this crap. Way to make an unnecessary comment on George Bush......seeing as how you know him and all, I find it very hard for you to know what kind of true logic he has. moron. I, on the other hand, do know him...very well actually from his government days in Texas. He is actually very intelligent and logical.....if you ever get the chance to sit down and talk with him.
Its not that I post accolades for the hell of it, but when someone questions my thinking ability or something of that nature, i'm going to post something to discredit it.

Say what you will, personally I think you are an idiot. Since I offered to post my thoughts to you...you no longer have any reason to comment on whatever it was that I wouldn't say. Keep it up though, you are hilarious.

And please believe had I been a brother before you, it would be a cold day in hell before I'd let you get initiated. Your feelings about APO are clearly passive at best and combative at worst.

Get YOUR facts straight. Instead of internalizing the spirit of what I said, you decided to nit-pick the fact that I said "all-white." Who cares? You're the only person who didn't seem to grasp the spirit of the message.

APO has never kept records based on race. While it's possible that there were African American brothers before 1947, all we really know is that '47 is when we first expanded to a historically black college.

And I NEVER said that GENERAL (not so-called "social" fraternities) are in the same category as RECOGNITION fraternities. However, at one point, they did have more in common than you're prepared to recognize.

I am a scholar of Greek history and traditions, sir. I really don't care what you claim you witnessed -- do your research and bring me some facts. Your anecdotes are meaningless because your credibility is nil.

I don't know what your problem is that you feel the need to constantly support Erik P. Conard even when he constantly puts down ONE OF THE FRATERNITIES YOU LIST IN YOUR SIGNATURE.

Erik P. Conard has constantly shown that he's is a racist, sexist, wannabe elitist who can't deal with the 21st Century. He bashes anything and everything that doesn't fit into his ideal of a "Fraternity." In this, he bashes a FRATERNITY that you claim to be a member of constantly and you support him.

I truly wonder if you understand the cardinal values of leadership, friendship, and service. In supporting such a bigot, you show nothing of leadership, nothing of friendship to your fellow brothers and other members of GC, and a lack of service by endorsing what Conard believes. You are a disgrace to Alpha Phi Omega.

I haven't read all of these replies yet, so maybe someone has said this already, but ...

... there is no such thing as "Georgia Tech University"!!!

Sorry, I had to express that. No one can ever seem to get the name of my school right, and it's not that hard (I mean, "Georgia Institute of Technology" sounds so much nicer, really).

So yeah, to actually say something on topic ... yeah, some of our Pikes are insensitive jerks (not all of them ... but some have been known to, for example, chase and throw things at gay couples, etc.). But one of the interesting things about the "NIC" fraternities is that they can be completely one way on one campus and pretty much completely different on another. So I really hope that students at Howard won't just judge PiKA in general from our idiot students and their stupid party :(

Oh, and not all historically white fraternities and sororities have had "whites only" clauses. I know that my fiance's fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma, has never had one. This is from their international website:

Public Mottos

"Brotherhood is more than skin deep."

In 1858, a proposal was introduced to the Fraternity that would have made Phi Kappa Sigma an all-white organization. The proposal was unanimously voted against, therefore making the Fraternity the first to be anti-discriminatory. Our Brothers choose men to become members based on the worth of their character, not superficialities like race, religion, or wealth.

(This is may have something to do with why they are one of the smaller and less popular fraternities in the country, but y'know, that's how it goes ...)

It isn't just one post. Erik has been offensive for years.
