Me neither. Everything that I've found says it's by Carmen McRae & Dave Brubeck:

http://www.npr.org/programs/pianojaz...002/mcrae.html

I've heard the instrumental before, but that was the first time I heard the vocals.

ETA:

Here's a site where you can hear the clip:

Also, Billie Holiday died in 1959 & the song was released in 1959.

She's newsworthy because of her sheer hoodness. Remember, we're in times where Flayva Flaav!!! and Booby Beresford Brown can get TV shows.

Same here. I bet Paris meant to say Carmen McRae.

I have not watched like the last 3 eps but tonight is night one of Hollywood auditions

175 have to get cut to 24.

CrimsonTide4 02-08-2006 09:51 PM

Brittenum twins. . .please STFU, you thieving azz so and sos.   If you got that much pull with J Moss, why are you on American Idol?

btb87 02-21-2006 10:23 PM

My humble opinion of tonite's show so far (and there are still more than 30 minutes to go) is that the lineup is going from strongest to weakest. But like I said, there are still several singers to go.

jojapeach 02-22-2006 08:27 AM

I would have agreed until the 11th performer, Atlanta's own Kinnik Sky. Simon was wrong for calling her performance "cabaret". I loved her rendition of "Get Here", which I happen to have always thought as too sentimental. My current faves are Mandisa, Paris (another homegirl!), and Kinnik. The others are gonna have to step it up and show and prove over the next several weeks.

Now she did tear that song up! When she was talking about what she was going to sing I told my daughter "Good choice!" and I think she did an excellent job!

I like Paris, but I honestly thought that she was a bit over the top last night, but apparently, that's what the judges were looking for.

Brenna (is that her name from Mt. Vernon?) is a bit too much for me, period.

Missed it last night but from what I saw of her in the past 2 weeks, she is too much for me as well.

raregem1913 02-22-2006 12:58 PM

Lawd Geezus @ Brenna...was I the only one that saw her dropping it like it was hot at the end of the show when the credits were rolling!?!? The girl got issues. I'm mad she was singing that song all seductive.

I'm loving Paris!!!

I agree, Paris was a little extra last night.

I can see right now that Brenna will annoy me just like that Mikaila Gordon did last year:rolleyes:

btb87 02-22-2006 11:01 PM

Once again, my personal opinion:

As a whole, I think the guys outperformed the girls. I really thought they were all good, versus about 8 of the 12 girls.

DirectorDST1999 02-23-2006 02:45 AM

I also think the guys were better than the girls.

Ladies Night

Paris was a bit much. Now, she can sing but trying to act like Fantasia during her performance ticked me off. Everyone knows that Fantasia dances around and kicks that leg up when she performs. Paris also seems immature.

Katherine, the last girl, was good. She has a good voice. She's my favorite of the white girls.

I also like Mandisa...gotta give it up for the big girls! I would at least like to see her make it to the top 12. She has a pleasing personality and a good voice.

Kinnik was ok. There were some rough spots in her performance of "Get Here" but overall she did ok. I think it was a "safe" song for her.

Brenna is out of control. And yes, I saw her dropping it like it's hot at the end of the show. She needs to watch it. I feel a scandal surfacing with her.

The Men

My favs:

Chris (a cutie)

Elliot (My sister said he looks like he should be on Lord of the Rings...LOL. The boy can sing though.)

Gedeon (the only brother so you know they are probably looking for a white guy this year)

Taylor Hicks (grey haired one)

Ace

Sway (Simon was wrong for saying his performance was pimpy...LOL)

The guys who had me saying "What the heck were you thinking?" were: The one singing the Barry Manilow song and the Crooner

It's hard for me to say which girls will get voted off on Thursday. But I think the guy singing the Barry Manilow song and Bucky will leave this week.

RBL 02-23-2006 09:54 AM

The Guys

Elliot- might have been the best vocally but he needs to watch it cuz he did come off very karoake

Gedeon- I like the throwback vibe he had.. very Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and he perofrmed very well... certainly unique in the sense

Ace- clearly he is being pimped for the Top 12. He should have done One More Try.. I think there are some songs that can be redone.... speaking of

Sway- he went there and didn't quite make it. Very ambitious song choice but if you can't match Philip Bailey don't do any EWF songs

Chris- really good.. he channeled Jon Bon Jovi. Solid

Everyone else was mediocre to bad(although I think Bucky will be safe)

skeeliteful 02-23-2006 01:28 PM

I missed the 1st half of the performances. But of what I did watch, my favorite is Taylor Hicks. I love how he gets into the music and you can tell that he feels what he's singing. I didn't particularly care for the song he sung last night, but he did well.

I caught the snippets they showed of each performer and I'm not sure what Sway was thinking for attempting to sing "Reasons".

Gideon has a Broadway/Ben Vereen feel to him with all the grinnin' he was doing.

Steeltrap 02-23-2006 01:38 PM

I think Ace will survive. Face it, he has the looks that make teenage girls in the wider society excited. :p

CrimsonTide4 02-23-2006 09:14 PM

Watching the results show so I am seeing the recap of the performances. Interesting.

DirectorDST1999 02-23-2006 11:22 PM

I'm not surprised at the ones who were voted off. The last girl really has a pretty soprano voice and she picked a terrible song. I think she could have rocked a Mariah Carey song.

Yeah - for what it was worth. . .

WenD08 03-01-2006 05:26 PM

it seemed like yesterday was Country Night. yes it's important to show you have "range", so to speak but...can we say "song selection"? that's what killed Nadia last year...

DirectorDST1999 03-10-2006 12:35 AM

Has anyone been watching? America voted and American Idol picked the Top 12...LOL. Here they are...

1. Mandisa - the sistah from TN, graduate of Fisk University. She has a soulful sound and rocks the house with her powerhouse voice everytime. She's the one who let Simon have it in a nice way when he made reference to her weight.

2. Paris - the teen that has a unique sound for such a youngster who is from MN or GA...not quite sure. I've heard her make reference to both states. She's the granddaughter of Ann Nesby from Sounds of Blackness.

3. Lisa - The 16 year old that people say reminds them of Aaliyah. I don't see or hear it. She's has an ok voice but not one of my favorites.

4. Melissa - Not quite sure if she knows her place. It was a shocker for some that she wasn't sent home. She has a good voice but has been known for picking the wrong songs. She's forgettable.

5. Katharine - Another one with a great voice. She can do runs so she's alright with me.

6. Kellie - The TRUE southern belle. Some say she's another Carrie Underwood, but Simon said he prefers her over Carrie. She's portrayed herself as a dumb blonde to some and just a pure country girl to others. She has a decent voice when she's singing country music.

7. Elliot - One of my favorites who has an awesome voice with a soulful sound. The boy is bad...just flawless!!!!!

8. Ace - Now this is the eye candy that is supposedly dating Essence Atkins of Half and Half. He has a great falsetto and actually sounded good singing Michael Jackson's "Butterflies". He is a pretty white boy. Yahooo!

9. Chris - The bald rocker, husband and father of 2 who can actually sing. During the first week of the Top 24 he performed "Wanted Dead or Alive"...they LOVE him.

10. Taylor - He's the one with the salt and pepper hair who has a Michael McDonald sound and moves like Ray Charles. He has lots of energy and obviously loves music and entertaining.

11. Bucky - He's the southern gentleman...in my best country voice "Thank ya very much"...he's just so darned mannerable. He has a unique voice, can hold a note...so far I've only heard him sing country songs....all of which were actually good.

12. Kevin - My mama said if you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say it....so..........

There you have it, AI's Top 12 because I believe America wanted Gedeon, the brother from Memphis. He went out with style and class and sang the heck out that song on his exit. So, needless to say, there are no brothers in the Top 12 this year which means what????? You figured it out...it's the year for a white male to win.

DirectorDST1999 03-10-2006 12:36 AM

Stevie Wonder

Oh yeah, next week as they start the countdown by weeks with the Top 12, they will sing Stevie Wonder songs. This should be interesting.

RBL 03-10-2006 10:18 AM

Just when I was gonna give up on AI (after Gedeon's wrongful elimination last night.. btw he SUNG THE LIVING HELL out of his farewell song).. they announce they are doing Stevie Wonder... I have been waiting 5 seasons for SW night... People are gonna fail miserably next week.. I really hope they pick obscure Stevie songs. The only person I can envision singing well will be Taylor...IF he sings "Superstition"

DirectorDST1999 03-11-2006 11:36 AM

Elliot will do well too with SW songs.

txdiva 03-11-2006 12:09 PM

I've been waiting for a Stevie Wonder week for years!!! I'm excited! I hope they don't disappoint me. Elliott's already done one SW song, so he's going to do well. Katharine did one, too, but it wasn't that great.

BrnSuga 03-12-2006 11:02 PM

I actually kind of feel sorry for Kevin. He's so emotional. I was actually surprised he didn't leave instead of Gideon. I agree with Simon that he appeals more to an older "caucasian" crowd. I hate to say it but he'll probably be gone very soon.
