Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 07:13 AM

It's election day kiddies!!! :D

Get out and vote!

kappaloo 06-28-2004 12:57 PM

I've voted!

Taualumna 06-28-2004 12:59 PM

Ditto

Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 01:07 PM

I will be voting on my way home from work!

bcdphie 06-28-2004 03:14 PM

Just got back from voting!

MooseGirl 06-28-2004 03:48 PM

my goodness - it's election day and I've only just found this thread!

I guess i've been doing too much schoolwork lately (which, incidentally has a lot to do with government information)

anyway I have so many thoughts on the issue, and I must say some of your posts have me second guessing my decision (although I haven't voted yet - after the student council meeting tonight, I will).

anyway, I just have a horrible feeling that the conservatives will win, and In my opinion, that's just bad. I admit, I once voted for Harris (his 2nd win), but never again shall I vote conservative (well, at least not within the foreseeable future)

On a happy note, I have inspired some of my friends to vote, incl some first-timers....yay!

Taualumna 06-28-2004 04:03 PM

Gosh, am I the only Conservative on this board?

Probably... but we love you anyway. :)

Hey - did anyone have a "Progressive Canadian" in their riding - on the ballot it said "PC Party"! I'm surprised - rather sneaky if you ask me. I wonder if they'll get mistake votes due to that.

Sistermadly 06-28-2004 04:34 PM

MisterMadly voted this morning. I wish I could vote. The suspense is killing me!

Of course we still love you :)

Anyway, no, there was no "PC" candidate in my riding. In my riding we have

Conservative
Green
Liberal
Marijuana
Marxist-Leninist
NDP

Or at least, those were the parties listed on Elections Canada website.

Taualumna 06-28-2004 04:39 PM

Ooo, did you guys hear about the candidate up in Markham who calls his (or maybe it's a her) party the Progressive-CONSERVATIVES??? Complete with a blue sign? There's another candidate, an independent who has a red one. Confusing, huh?

bcdphie 06-28-2004 04:50 PM

There was no Progressive Canadian candidate in my riding, however I read on the CBC website that the Progressive Canadian party is made up of former PC's who didn't agree with uniting the right - they are trying to re-establish the PC party in a way.

eta: 30 minutes till the polls close in Nfld., 5 hours till they close out here :p.

I wonder if these were former Progressive Conservative and former Liberal members who left the parties?

I know there was a candidate in York region (for the life of me I can't remember his name but I believe his sister is also in politics) who left the Liberal party because he felt they were not living up to their promises and he used red for his signs and was elected as an independent.

God, it's bugging me I can't remember his name.

John Nuziata (sp?) i think hgis wife was the former mayor of East York or something.

I just voted, there was a Communist party member in my riding.

That's the Progressive Canadians... their slogan is "Your progressive conservative party" (but that's MUCH larger on their signs). We have one in my riding... the signs are confusing for those "not in the know". There's talk of perhaps assigning party colours so that people aren't mislead.

That's what I read too, somewhere, can't remember tho - I read too much :p

There's one in my riding, but I watched the candidates debate and he didn't impress me much, although he did seem like a nice guy.

ok..i'm off to go vote now

kappaloo 06-28-2004 05:49 PM

OMG!

Place your bets - Canadian Politics have becoming an sporting event!

Read this: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/06/28...lxn_bets040628

  :p

Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 06:49 PM

I voted!

What does everyone think of there not being a media blackout this election?

At first I thought it was a bad idea. I might sway too many votes.
But then again, there isn't that much time difference in when the polls close, so I doubt it would have that great an effect.

bcdphie 06-28-2004 07:44 PM

Did anyone watch the beginning of the coverage on the CBC?

I thought it was great the way they played in the HNIC theme and the HNIC logo, but said Election Night in Canada :).

My boyfriend are going to take a break in a bit from watching the polls and go see Farenheit 9/11. It is going to be a night of major political discussions! But I love that sort of thing.

All you can eat sushi and talking politics, I am looking forward to my evening ahead!

Well, speaking as a native Westerner, it was always annoying to turn on the tv at 6pm Mountain Time, and see that the election was in essence over already, so why vote? My friends out west appreciated not knowing until later, but what can you do this time around, eh? ;)

Yeah, I caught the beginning. I liked the song about the blackout :D

It's pizza and politics in my house tonight.

I think they have fixed that a bit by staggering when the polls are open. Ontario/Quebec (which is a lot of seats) now closes at the same time as the Praries and only a half hour before BC!

Considering that there are only 32 seats in the Maritimes and Newfoundland, I don't see much harm in reporting on those seats - especially since the Maritimes has the habit of not predicting the rest of the country (especially in close races like todays).

Do we have any GCers from the Maritimes? I can't recall any....

Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 09:09 PM

21 minutes till Ontario and Quebec polls close.

They're predicting the Bloq to take the majority in Quebec.

Nunziata is from my riding.. along with his wife and his sister... the whole family is in politics, and the rumors say equally crooked :) And before I get flamed what else do you call having your mistress on the office payroll.. even though she never showed up for a day of work?

Lady Pi Phi 06-28-2004 11:05 PM

Well it's a minority Liberal government.

I'm not thrilled, but I'm glad it's not a Conservative government.

I'm a little disappointed that the Green party didn't even get a seat, but I do hope they received enough votes to get some funding.
Maybe they can convince the independent from BC to join the Green party?

For a while there I did the the Liberals were going to run away with it. I wonder if the Liberals can count on NDP support?

kappaloo 06-29-2004 12:20 AM

Last I checked with the Elections Canada site, the Green is over 4%... which would give them funding. I think. I believe you get funding for every vote if you get 2% or more.

bcdphie 06-29-2004 06:24 AM

Green ended up with 6-7% of the BC vote. I was really hoping the "other" was a Green MP. That person is holding a lot of power right now.

The Liberals were a bit more ahead than I thought they would be, and I am glad they retained power.

Lady Pi Phi 06-29-2004 07:34 AM

Okay, is it just me or is Peter McKay really a whinny bitch!

I mean, he was bitching last night about how Scott Brison crossed the floor, this morning he was whinning about how the Liberals villified (sp?...his word not mine) Harper.
For the love of God McKay...the election is over, you won your seat, and the Conservatives were just as vicious as the Liberals. So why don't you STHU!

Taualumna 06-29-2004 01:33 PM

So the Liberals are at 135 and the NDP at 19, one short of forming a coalition. What do you think will happen? Perhaps convince the one Independent to join the Liberals?

I don't see the Independent going left... afterall he was a former Alliance member that didn't win the new Conservative ballot for the riding... I'd seem him staying Idenpendent or going Conservative.

I think the Liberals did much better than predicted becuase of a public desire not to see Harper in power... so swing voters between Liberal/NDP voted Liberal, so as to ensure a Liberal government... That and I think the Conservatives and Harper shot themselves in the foot with statements made by party members and Harper (White's comments or Harper's comments in particular), as well as Harper's support of the Bush administration, all of which added up to cost them votes that ultimately went Liberal...

On another note anyone see Layton's speach last night? The guy right behind him is his son Mike, a Kappa Sigma from UofT (and not a bad dart player), and if you looked or had a chance to see the guy in the grey suit on the far left of the stage... that'd be me!

Lady Pi Phi 06-29-2004 01:45 PM

The Metro this morning said the NDP got 22 seats

RACooper 06-29-2004 01:47 PM

Those were early results, obviously printed before some close ridings had all the results in... the final number was 19 NDP seats.

Yeah, you're right. It must have been printed before the final count.

I just went to the CBC webiste to get the final results.

Are you from Jack's riding, or were you there for support?

ETA: I just heard on the radio that Harper's considering quitting the Conservatives!

RACooper 06-29-2004 02:10 PM

There for support mainly... for Mike and Sarah, as they are both friends. It is hard to describe how charged and stressful the media coverage was... so I did my best to be a good friend and support Mike and Sarah under this pressure. I didn't want to go onto the stage, but with the press of the press (fun play on words) I was just pushed up there....

Cool....totally unrelated question: Is Sarah Greek? Also, you said earlier that Jack Layton is a Sig alum, but I don't see any mention of him on the Canadian Sig site.

MooseGirl 06-29-2004 05:10 PM

I went to bed around 11:15 so I didn't see the absolute final results til the morning - was a lil disappointed the NDPs seats went down to 19 from 23...And although I vaguely remember seeing Jack and his wife on the stage, I don't remember listening to him speak - i was really tired last night!

What I found most amusing was that I was watching it all on diff channels flicking back and forth, but I spent a lot of time watching MuchMusic, and I am suprised to note that Ed the Sock seems to share the same sentiments as I regarding the election...weird considering i normally dislike Ed.

kappaloo 07-01-2004 01:31 AM

Things could have been so much easier:

http://politicswatch.com/VoteSelectorQuiz2004.html

(it said NDP for me)
