When one donates, you are told to take it easy the rest of the day. Do not work out, do not smoke and drink water.

I definitely agree. I don't know how drives are conducted where you're at, but here, after a person has donated, there's usually a table filled with all you can eat food and drink. Sometimes it's Chinese food, sometimes it's snacks (Rice Krispie Treats are my personal favorite). And they encourage you to stay a while before taking off.

Still, it's important to take it easy for the rest of the day. Even after stuffing my face with food post-donation, I've had a number of dizzy spells. Everybody's bodies replenishes the supply at different speeds.

SWTXBelle 06-16-2007 04:09 PM

And I have found it worse in the summer. I have to take it easy the next day, too, or I get woozy.

I do not "do" drives any more:)
I just go to the blood center itself once a month (or so).
While one can give blood every 56 days or so, one can donate platelets every three days (limited over a year however).
And yes they do have juices, treats and other goodies.
On holiday weekends, they have a cookout.
And twice a year, just for platelet donors, they have a party at a very nice conference center.

And as said before, anyone who is over 16, 110 lbs and healthy should give some thought to giving.

I most likely have met most of the platelet donors in my area and have met a few of those who may have received them.

Thanks, Jon, I'd truly love to but can't. I am endlessly grateful to those of you who CAN and DO! (Where's the icon for kisses and hugs??)

If you donated through the Red Cross, you should have received a donor card with your blood type on it.

I'm O-.

Drolefille 06-16-2007 11:04 PM

O-, and I'm ashamed to say I don't donate as often as I should :( I have once and needles don't bother me. It's much like every other "should" in my life. I just don't have time! (but I should make time)

My best friend is O-, and he gets Red Cross invites out the ASS. I think he gets notices of every blood drive within 100 miles. And I love how they always say "You're our Type O Hero!".

Yeah, I get letters from them all the time. I'm just really bad at planning and that sort of thing. It's like organ donation. Illinois recently passed a law making one's wishes on organ donation legally binding. The idea being this way your family can't prevent your organs from being donated if it's what you wanted. So now you have to re-sign up (lifegoeson.com). I want to donate my organs, but have I signed up? No. Why? I don't know.

/end hijack-y rambliness

jon1856 06-17-2007 07:21 PM

I signed up to donate both whole blood and platelets this up coming Saturday.
Who is going to "join" me?

Well while I was unable to donate whole blood today (was under FDA time limit), I did give double platelet.

And did anyone else give today?

SWTXBelle 06-23-2007 08:22 PM

Surgery on Monday, so I'm out of the loop for a little while - but I do know that the Bloodmobile is in town the first Thursday of the month - so I'm going to try as soon as I can!

Good for you-best wishes on your recovery/rehap.

I should have mensioned in my posting that there were two people at
blood bank giving for the very first time.
Both said that thought it was the right thing to do.

SWTXBelle 06-24-2007 08:41 AM

Hey, Jon, you should organize a GC blood drive - but remember, you need cool t-shirts and lots of snacks!

I think I just tried to ;)
I received a nice t-shirt and snacks from the blood bank yesterday.
So nice in fact, I am going back next Saturday.

whiteandblack 06-24-2007 01:27 PM

A+. I'm usually able to give, but this month I was rejected due to my low iron. It's an incentive, though, for me to maintain a healthy diet.

SWTXBelle 06-24-2007 01:48 PM

I really hate it when I get rejected because of low iron. I know it shouldn't, but it makes me feel . . .oh, defective!

AOX81 06-24-2007 02:20 PM

Me, my brother, and my father are A+. My mother is A-.

Good grief SWTXBelle! Good luck on Monday and hope it's not serious!

I'm A+ btw:)

AB+ 3%
That's me. I donate plasma now. It's good because it's universal.
Quote:

What is Plasma?
Plasma is the fluid portion of blood -- the river which transports red blood cells, white cells and platelets through the body to nourish and protect tissues and organs. This pale yellow liquid is also rich in minerals and substances which help control bleeding.
Quote:

Why is There a Special Need for AB Plasma?
In addition to being the rarest blood type (only about 3 percent of the population has type AB blood) AB plasma is the universal plasma type. AB plasma can be safely given to patients with any blood type.
I used to work @ a blood bank. I miss those free post-donation donuts:p

scbelle 06-27-2007 05:25 PM

O Negative, the universal donor, but lately my blood has been going straight to wounded soldiers (hopefully) since I donate through the Armed Services Blood Program. I tried doing the plasma thing once, but that actually made me faint, which didn't make sense to me since the non-plasma portion of my blood was being pumped back into me.

It's been known to happen. Last Saturday I had to take a long nap in the afternoon after I gave a double.

The platelet donation is way different from blood donation. They take out some blood, spin it around a centrifuge, then give it back to you mixed with blood thinner. The "giving back" part was really weird ... I got shivery (despite the blankets and numerous hot water bottles they give you), and felt a weird almost burning feeling in my arm on the return. It took me NINETY minutes to donate lol. Apparently I was a bit of a slow poke. That wasn't fun for my back, I can tell you that.

I felt really weird afterward too ... and here I was thinking it'd be easier than whole blood because I wasn't losing red blood cells. I find donating whole blood a lot easier for me, so I'm not sure which program I'll stick to.

But the snack table is win in both places, so it's all good lol.

That's the one thing I don't miss about donating platelets.

summer_gphib 09-10-2009 06:03 PM

I tried to give blood this weekend, but my blood pressure was too high. I had been taking Aleve, and didn't realize that it counter acted with my BP meds. Anyway, I'm AB-, wich is 1% of the population. :)

lovespink88 09-10-2009 06:12 PM

I have no idea what mine is (I should probably find out), but this thread made me giggle...a family friend of ours who is known to have a bit of a grouchy, pessimistic personality has the blood type B Positive! haha!

WCsweet<3 09-10-2009 09:57 PM

I'm B+ as is my brother. 9% of the population.
Father is B+. Mother is O+. Boyfriend is O +or- I'm not entirely sure...
I found out since I was going to donate bone marrow to the brother.

I can't give blood so I help run the blood drives at my mother's Church. It is actually probably good that I can't donate since if a needle touches me I get hysteric and that reaction has improved with age...

Jill1228 09-10-2009 10:03 PM

I am A+
Dunno about DH though

honeychile 09-10-2009 11:29 PM

A+

Nice bump!

I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but we had to give blood while we were pledges (unless excused by the blood bank). I was a bit whiny about it afterwards, and a sister handed me a book - Journey by Robert & Suzanne Massie. It changed my viewpoint on giving blood forever.

My silly brother still hasn't gotten his blood retyped, even after having had massive medical problems in the past few months. He was in Intensive Care in two different hospitals for the month of May. I never got a chance to talk to his doctor, or I would have told the doctor to test his blood type.

Smile_Awhile 09-10-2009 11:33 PM

OOPS. Double post!

Smile_Awhile 09-10-2009 11:33 PM

I'm A-.

Warning to any of us still under 20 (I know, we're a minority)- they've seriously upped the weight limit for women. I tried to donate a week ago, and I didn't weigh enough. For someone 4'11" (my height), you had to be 141 pounds to donate. I weigh about 20 pounds less than that, so I"m out of the donor pool again. However, once you get past 20 years of age, the weight limit drops back down to 110 for all.

christiangirl 09-11-2009 01:01 AM

My blood type has always been a "sensitive issue" in my family.:p

Both my parents are A+ (and so is my sister) so when I was born, they just told the doctors I should be A+ because they both are AND THE IDIOTS PUT THAT IN MY MEDICAL CHARTS WITHOUT CHECKING. So I lived my whole life with that in my records and all the times I had blood drawn, no one thought to check or change it. When I gave blood at 18, I found out I was O+. It totally freaked me out--I thought I had been adopted or switched at birth or something. I didn't think it was possible to be a different blood type than both your parents but my mom researched it and told me to get a grip, it can happen. :o

Yeah, ABO blood typing has recessive and dominant features, so your parents are actually AO, and when you were conceived and magical genetic things happened you ended up being O, which you only had a 25% chance of being. Your sister ended up in the 75% category of being A.

Once you're O, you can only pass on O to your kids, so when my ex and I were discussing children we knew our kid would be O since we are both O+ (and likely blue eyed and blonde or red headed since all of our features are recessive). Eventually over time there will be more and more people in the world with O blood, as there are less pockets of people who are not intermarrying and interbreeding with others.

Angelicqt716 09-11-2009 01:34 AM

I'm A- . I don't think it's common, but I don't think its the rarest either.

CutiePie2000 09-11-2009 01:39 AM

There is a nice little chart for this at:http://www.givelife2.org/aboutblood/bloodtypes.asp
It is a little bit down the page. I believe it is the third image.

SydneyK 09-11-2009 08:24 AM

I'm O-, which makes me a universal donor. Unfortunately, I'm also STDON+, which means I don't donate like I should.

(STDON+ = Scared To Death Of Needles)

Scully 09-11-2009 10:33 AM

O+, I've donated a few times. Yes it hurts, but thinking of the good I'm doing makes it a little less painful. And who doesn't love chocolate chip cookies and orange juice?
