Pan Am :( I loved that show!

MysticCat 05-14-2012 06:39 PM

Looking through the shows people have mentioned, it seems to me that there's a difference between shows that were cancelled after a good run (sometimes cancelled after they really should have called it quits) and shows that were cancelled before they ever really got a chance.

This is why I like HBO. You know they're going to finish each season, and generally, they stick with a show once they've decided to air it.

I am happy that Grimm and Castle were renewed. GCB is the only disappointment so far this season for me.

Except for Hung. I loved that show and HBO cancelled that one. I still miss Men in Trees. Loved it and ABC moved it around so much and kept putting it on hiatus repeatedly. They set it up to fail and that really ticked me off.

Hmm, and both shows had the same female actress. Odd.

Since this got bumped...

I'll add Stargate SG-1 to my list. It was still on the air when I posted my original list in '04. SG-1 was definitely one of those shows that was cancelled after it really should have been cancelled. Everything was wrapped up nicely at the end of season 8, but no ... they had to make money. So they invented a new enemy, pulled over a couple of folks from Farscape, and tried to keep the show going with an almost-all-new SG-1 team. It didn't work, IMO.

I wasn't crazy about Stargate Atlantis or Stargate Universe.

Speaking of Farscape, I can't believe I didn't list it the first time around.

ETA:

Andromeda
Dollhouse
Chuck

I'll never figure out why Joss did what he did to Cordelia. None of it, starting back in S3, made any sense. Then again, I didn't get into Buffy or Angel or Firefly/Serenity until after they were all cancelled so no heartbreak. Thank heavens for complete DVR sets and video on demand thanks to Netflix!

Other shows I still miss:

Sports Night (the cancellation that almost made me give up on network tv.)
Alias (the cancellation that finally made me give up on network tv.)
Animaniacs

I kind of liked Vala and Mitchell, but I agree it needed to go. It's funny, the other day me and my friend were talking and decided to try to rent Andromeda and watch it. We couldn't find it anywhere. It made me very sad, and made me think I was imagining the show.

victoriana 05-14-2012 09:07 PM

I think the cancellation I was most upset about was Stargate Universe. I thought it was the best of the franchise, but maybe that's because I'm such a huge BSG fan. The way they left it made me sooo upset. They had so much more to explore with that show. I know it's foolish for me to hope that they'll bring it back, but I'm still crossing my fingers.

I was pissed that Caprica was cancelled as well. Another great show with lots of potential that ended to soon and too sloppily.

IrishLake 05-14-2012 09:25 PM

Recent cancellations that I'm annoyed with:

The River
Hung
Harry's Law
Awake

I'm cool with CSI Miami getting the ax, though. CSI has run its course, I only watch the older re-runs in syndication.

There was a show in the mid 00's called Son & Daughters, and it was an improv comedy about a close knit family in Hamilton OH. It was funny, I was pissed when it got the ax.

KSUViolet06 05-14-2012 10:38 PM

Remember that show Popular that used to come on after Dawson's Creek?

That was my fave show in HS. Oddly enough, Leslie Bibb from GCB was in it.

I liked Pan Am, Hellcats, and a few shows that only got like one or 2 seasons.

I have a hard time getting into prime time sitcoms because Murphy's Law states that the ones I like will get cancelled.

I stick to HBO series. lol.

groovypq 05-14-2012 11:12 PM

Tonight, I'm particularly upset that Make It Or Break It got cancelled. How can they leave us not knowing how the Olympics turn out?!

Damn this is an old thread.

I have to say that Arrested Development is sorely missed but there is a movie in the works. I own all three seasons on DVD and I seriously still can't get enough of that show.

I did not realize that Hung was cancelled...sometimes it's hard for me to tell with HBO, because each show has it's own rotating new "season". I watched Hung the first season, then I stopped. I guess I'm one of the ones to blame...sorry.

I can't wait for True Blood to come back next month...it's perfect steamy, swampy summer fare.

I didn't know Pan Am got cancelled! I really liked that show, and found out fairly recently that the super cute co-pilot is from my home town. I was hoping to catch up once I was back stateside. Anyway, probably too expensive to shoot and money always wins.
Others I miss: Sports Night and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Both really smart, really funny.

GammaGirl1908 05-15-2012 02:27 AM

OMG, another Sports Night fan! That show is still one of my faves, and I actively miss it.

Amen!

It's currently 3am, I just got home from the airport a little while ago, I couldn't sleep, so I turned on the tv. The only good show that's on.. L&O. It's so awesome, that between L&O and SVU, I'm pretty sure you could find at least one episode playing every hour of every day.

I love this show! One of my friends introduced me to it in college. At that point, it had probably been off the air for about a year. But I'm not surprised it was cancelled.. I don't think anyone has even heard of it! I know I hadn't until my friend told me about it.

John Dark: Forget Cleo. She’s a skanky ho. Why, you’d be better off with someone like… Joan of Arc!
Abe: Are you serious, John Dark? Joan of Arc?
John: Sure! That Joan of Arc is one tasty piece of bitch!
Abe: Well, she’s smart, loyal, pretty, and I delight in her caustic wit, but…
John: But nothing! You should date the crap out of her!

:D

Noooo!!! I hadn't heard Pan Am was cancelled! I really enjoyed it!

I miss Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip too, very clever show!

My biggest pet peeve with networks is that they 'know' whether they are going to cancel a show or not and they then allow the show to do a "season" finale, which then the show leaves you (the viewer) with SOOOO many questions that then never get answered! The least these stupid networks can do is with the newbie shows tell them "hey you don't know if you will be renewed, make sure that all the big questions get answered by the end of the season and just leave little minor questions that could continue on if you are renewed for season 2". You are left with so many unanswered questions and then find out AFTER the "season" finale that "oh by the way the show isn't being renewed".

Plus, I wish networks gave shows a chance. I'm sorry most shows take more than one season to really find their footing and to gain an audience. Why can't you give shows a chance? It just sucks trying to "get involved" in a tv show and then it being cancelled.

Then the shows get replaced with stupid bs reality tv shows.

I agree with everything you’ve said! J

To use GCB as an example, by the time the season finale aired, the decision had been made. But let’s say even when they were filming the episode, it was still up in the air. Maybe they could have filmed 2 different endings- one to be used as a cliffhanger in case there would be a season 2, and the other that would wrap up the various plotlines, even if it was in a voiceover/scene-montage style, sort of like the end of Desperate Housewives (“Carlene never did build her Condos for Christian Living, but she did {blah blah blah}” Or whatever).

"Tell Spike Lee to sit down and shut up?" I fell completely in love at that point. Oh, how I miss this show!!!

Oh, I forgot Caprica! Sooo much potential there. :(

wareagle93 05-20-2012 05:49 PM

I really liked Glory Daze which was shown on TBS. It only lasted one season, but I thought it was pretty funny.

TPARose 05-20-2012 08:38 PM

Veronica Mars! I thought the first two seasons were two of the best written seasons I've still seen to this day. The third was .. okay. But it was still far better than most. I love Veronica's character.. Smart and sassy! Still watch the show over and over again on Netflix. So good!

GPhiBLtColonel 05-27-2012 10:58 PM

Oh no, I did not realize Harry's Law had been cancelled - LOVE that show! I am soooo sad :-(

nittanygirl 05-30-2012 11:30 AM

I'm super sad about GCB. I NEVER watch a show every week/keep up with it and I watched every episode of that.

PGD-GRAD 05-30-2012 12:17 PM

I watched the last episode of Harry's Law last Sunday. It was so well-written and acted--great, current plot lines and Kathy Bates never failed to delight. The ensemble cast worked so well together; it was one of the best episodes of the season.

As least it goes out on a high note, but I still can't believe it did not find an audience.

TOTALLY AGREE! I hope another network picks it up - I just LOVE that show!!!!:)
