those are called sailing shirts here, at least, that is the only thing I've heard that style of shirt called. Fishing shirt around here means one that you don't mind falling in the river in. There is a serious lack of recreational water. They chase you out of the James. Oh well.

krystle 06-13-2006 12:17 PM

I'm not too sure about "Northern Preppy", but where I'm from we've got our own breed of it: "Cape Cod Preppy".

Lots of the normal stuff - Abercrombie, A&E ( we tend to go the beachy/preppy look ), Lacoste. Then there's my favorite Vineyard Vines.

which if you don't know, you should all check out.

You are pure evil. Now I have a website to be addicted with.

I'm starting a new job Monday, and I'm totally making myself into New England Preppy for it. Awesome.

While many down South thought Vineyard Vines was the savior of the fratty clothing style besides Polo........I have come to realize that their clothing really isnt that great. Their shirts fit very wierd and will shrink in the wash. Their pants are baggy and their shirts are long. Basicall the only thing worth buying from there is the neck ties. The bow ties are way to flimsy to tie and hold shape.

That would be a fishing shirt.

macallan - no need to worry a new company just started down here called Souther Proper that sells beaus and gents ties (bow and straight ties) with only southern things printed on them ie. cotton, magnolias, dogwoods, catfish, and many other prints. I myself already have the pink cotton bow tie and the yellow magnolia bow tie. eventually they will be expanding into polos, pants, shorts and everything else you will need. and you are right people outside the south will never understand our style and tradition. Oh and there is one thing that all of yall have forgotton that people wear in the north and that is the dreaded JORTS hahaha

by the way go check out the websiteSouthern Proper

O.M.G. 98% of those tie patterns are GAY, with exception, possibly of the football one. If I saw a guy wearing any of those, I'd be looking for another one wearing one to hook him up with. GAY.

Shirts are supposed to be fitted, not loose. I hardly believe you have a collection of bowties, let alone occasions schedules to wear them to. And VV is known for their ties, so let your geeky trendwhore friends down South know that before they dress any worse than they already do.

Too bad they copy their designs from BB, Ferragamo, and pretty much any other tie maker.

rudey, shows how much you know about brooks brothers the only prints that are the same are the golf and the sail boats. alot of stripes and dots are at BB

ferragamo only has a golfer and a sailboat tie, but i admit the ties are decent at best but the rest of the site is full of faggotry. like that damn music

southern proper is a company that may copy only a couple of designs ie golf and sailing but what company doesnt, but the rest of the prints are truly southern.

well i am going to go put on my pleated nantucket reds and polo shirt , croakies, and go to the country club and play some golf and make connections with my southern compatriots and find my future southern wife in a sun dress and pearls. so i will be back to read you lame responce

OH SNAP. Nice.

I guess a guy wearing a tie that features pigs wearing bowties is appealing to someone somewhere, but ew. I am, however, kind of tempted to dress my black lab (although he's a mix) in a tie that features black labs wearing ties, because, well, that would almost be funny.

Also, even I would be tempted to kick someone in the face for saying HABERDASHERY.

tunatartare 07-06-2006 01:54 PM

Lily Pulitzer also has some lovely alternatives.

There are only three times in a man's life when it's acceptable for him to be wearing a bowtie.

When he's a groom:

When he's this man:

Yes, I have a few bowties and neckties from Southern Proper. They don't sell them anywhere in Texas, but I picked up some in Tuscaloosa.

Southern Proper and Vineyard Vines ties gained notoriety because they were worn by countless numbers of Senators, The President, John Kerry, Clinton, and members of state Governments. Go to the websites and you can find pictures. I guess they MUST be gay if all of them are wearing them. Sorry. You probobly do think they are ugly though. I'm also sure you like your guy wearing flat front khakis, square toed shoes, and a vertical striped Bananna Repblic shirt.

33girl 07-06-2006 03:00 PM

Rudith, you need to stay out of this thread or you might end up in some sort of messed up southern bow tie all guy threesome.

Lilly Pulitzer ties are to be worn on very special or specific situations. Allways in the summer or spring...and to out door events such as clam bakes, garden parties, etc. Yes, the designs and colors are a little outrageous, and that is why you can only get away with them at certain times. They go well with the Southern belle that is on your right arm wearing a sundress and pearls.

Find a pic of one of the people you mentioned wearing one, please, I dare you.

My husband doesn't really go for the preppy style. At all.

And just for the record, I live in Charlotte, NC.

Lol -- a lot of ppl in NC and SC don't consider Charlotte "Southern" though. They think of it like Florida -- a piece of the North that broke off and landed somewhere random. :p

There is a link to VV. Is Howard Dean , Kerry, Bush Sr. Michael Bloomberg, Giuliani, etc. good enough for you?

www.southernproper.com

Just go there and look up pictues. I know for sure there is a Georgia Senator and others wearing their ties. Thanks for playing.

And there is a difference between being fratty and being preppy. When you think of preppy, you should get an image of some socialite family in Connecticut playing lawn tennis with sweaters and flipped up collars (yes it is actually acceptable in some parts of the country......but Abercrombie and Hollister ruined it.) I am not particularly fond of the preppy style either.

I'm SOOOO confused. Why would someone proclaiming the perfection of Southern fratty-wear cite John Kerry and Howard Dean as examples? I thought the TRUE Southern fratty-gentleman would NEVER associate with anything those liberals were involved with.

Of course the majority of textiles and clothing are now manufactured overseas despite where the raw material is grown. The textile mills are for the most part long gone from Lawrence due to cheap labor in the south and now y'all are getting a taste of this as your factories are shuttered due to low costs of the Pacific Rim.

And no, polo shirts are not supposed to be tight fitting the least bit. Sorry that you are probobly some douchebag from California that thinks shrunken abercrombie shirts are acceptable. I actually do have bow ties. I have some for formal occasions, as well as regular dressy occasions. And yes, I know VV is known for their ties. Thanks. You're an idiot.

Ummm BB is not all dotted, striped or solid. You have no idea what you're talking about. And Hermes is the king of micro designs jagoff.

Let me sum it up for you. Me: Kiton Ties, You: Jerry Garcia Ties.

I don't know what part of Charleston you are in.......but I have spent a considerable amount of time there in social settings with many people my age and my parents age all wering VV, Southern Proper, Seersucker and the like.......Charleston is the frattiest place on earth.......what are you talking about?

I said originally that VV and Southern Proper gained notoriety from senators, poiticians, etc. I was called out on it, so I provided examples. Your political affiliation has no bearing on a sense of style. So by your reasoning...if Howard Dean or John Kerry were found to like cheeseburgers and golf.......would that mean that all of us "TRUE Southern-fratty gentleman" would have to give up cheeseburgers and our memberships to country clubs? I am confused as well.
