Martin Lawrence FINALLY leaves cop movies alone

Lawrence, Kutcher in Sony Cartoon

By Gregg Kilday

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Martin Lawrence (news), Ashton Kutcher (news) and Debra Messing (news) will voice characters in "Open Season," Sony Pictures' first computer-animated feature.

Lawrence will voice Boog, a domesticated grizzly bear, who teams up with Elliot (Kutcher), a mule deer, when the two are stranded in the woods during hunting season. Messing will provide the voice of Beth, a forest ranger who rescued Moog as a cub and raised him.

The project is inspired by the work of syndicated cartoonist Steve Moore ("In the Bleachers"), who will serve as an executive produder. "Season" will be directed by Jill Culton, with Anthony Stacchi serving as co-director.

"We just looked at a reel of the first act, and Jill and Tony had totally deconstructed it and cracked the story phenomenally well," said Sony Pictures Digital president Yair Landau, who oversees Sony Pictures Animation. "They have a great story sense, and that accelerated the process. Boog and Elliot are really compelling characters, and we just went after the two actors we wanted."

Sony Animation, which hopes to bring a new picture to the screen every 18 months to two years, is eyeing a 2006 release date for "Open Season."

"I've got a lot of things and stuff built in me that I just want to let go of." — Usher

"Yeah!," Usher's collaboration with Lil Jon and Ludacris, wasn't intended to be a proper single from his upcoming album, Confessions. Released to street DJs and mixtapes, the song was just meant to tease the appetites of Usher fans who've waited three years for the singer's fifth studio disc.

But quickly the appreciation for that song has grown — in the clubs, on the radio and in the streets. "It just sort of happened," Usher said recently. "You know, you get Lil Jon on a record — that's crazy. Ludacris? Bring him in. It's lights out, man."

"Yeah!" could be called the first consciously styled "crunk R&B" record. It's an ode both to the distinct grind of Southern rap beats and Usher's own signature soul croon. Even though Usher doesn't want to be known as a hip-hop artist ("Strictly R&B — we're bringin' it back," he boasted), he thinks he could be onto something with this mash-up of genres. "I think you're going to get more R&B/crunk records," he said. "I'm happy that I could be the one to kick it off."

Usher titled his album Confessions because he feels it's his most personal yet. He wrote more songs on this one than on any previous album. "All of us have our Pandora's boxes or skeletons in our closets," he explained. "I let a few of them out, you know. I've got a lot to say. I've got a lot of things and stuff built in me that I just want to let go of."

He was expressing the same sentiment back when he was in the studio (see "Usher To Share His Confessions In March"), and now Usher has the songs to prove it. On the track "Confessions II," he sings, "Got me talking to myself asking how am I going to tell you/ 'Bout the call I got from the girl/ That I was creepin' with, creepin' with/ Says she's three months pregnant and she's keepin' it."

"It wasn't a specific situation that happened in my life right now," he elaborated. "In other words, I wasn't in a relationship and got another girl pregnant — right now. But it is something I can relate to and it's something that has happened to me in the past. As I said, I have a few deep, dark ones that I've kept stowed away in a closet for a minute."

A window into his inner thoughts is also there on "Burn," a song about breakups and letting relationships flame out. Said Usher, "It's unfortunate when you have to let a situation go because it's not working. Although you may want to stay, you've got to let it burn."

His explanation has added resonance, since he just broke up with longtime girlfriend Chilli from TLC. "Yeah, I’m single," he smiled, sheepishly. "We're still friends. It's just something that happens in life."

Usher recruited a number of producers to work on Confessions, which drops March 30. Jermaine Dupri, the Neptunes, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have all written songs with him. Other producers include Vidal and Dre, Lil Jon and Rich Harrison.

Word has it (per Chilli on the Tom Joyner Morning Show this week) that the reason for the breakup is Usher's infidelity . .

Yeah, it's kinda sad that a lot of people are sleeping on Jamie Foxx's musical talents. A lot of people didn't even know he could blow like that until Kanye West's Slow Jamz came out (the full CD version...not the radio edit).

LeToya Luckett On Beyoncé [02-17]
Here's what LeToya Luckett told Sister2Siter about a recent run-in she had with Beyoncé:
You know what? I ran into Beyoncé about a year ago in The Cheesecake Factory and that was my last time really speaking to her. But it was a really emotional thing for me. We hadn't seen each other in like three years and it was around Christmastime. Every Christmas before, we would see each other and do the whole family/friend thing; and to know that I wasn't going to get to see her the next day kinda messed with me. But it was a good thing because when we hugged and spoke we kinda caught up a little bit. I was able to release some of that that I was holdin gin for a minute, so it was cool. It was a very, very genuine...I don't know. She was very genuine. The hug and everything. At first when we saw each other it was so awkward that we said hello for the first five minutes, back and forth. "Hey." "Hello." "How you doin'?" "Hey." Neither one of us knew what ot say to each other and then finally I just went over to her table and she stood up and we hugged in the middle of the Cheesecake Factory for like, 5, 10 minutes. And it was on pause. Everybody was just staring with their mouths wide open like, oh my god. But it was a beautiful thing. It made my Christmas. It's hard when you, for so many years, have been with a person or around a person and then for that to be taken away from you it's almost like somebody died. And then to never know when you're gonna run back into them again. For me to see her and we talked and hugged or whatever...That was a beautiful thing to me.

Gest, Ross to tie the knot?

Reports say Liza’s soon-to-be-ex and former Supreme are planning a wedding

And you thought the life of David Gest couldn’t get any more weird: The estranged husband of Liza Minnelli is reported to have gotten engaged to Diana Ross, reports Ananova.com.

London’s Daily Express says the pair have become close despite Ross’ being a friend of Minnelli, and that Gest and Ross are already planning a wedding as glamorous as his with Liza.

Ross apparently turned to Gest for comfort after being stopped for drunken driving in Tucson in 2002. She recently served two days in jail for the offense.

Gest said recently he would probably marry within two years. US Weekly magazine editor Janice Min said, “Sources close to us have said it could be Diana Ross.”

Gest and Minnelli are in the middle of a bitter divorce in which they are suing each other for millions of dollars.

P. DIDDY OPENS ARMS TO J.LO: Rap mogul lets her know she can come home.

J. Lo & P. Diddy
(Feb. 19, 2004) *Could it be true? P. Diddy still wants J. Lo? After all the friendly coincidences arriving in the same places and assuring us of their “friendship?”
Combs reportedly started to give her his best game for Valentine’s day by buying her a $720,000 dollar diamond necklace, 7online.com reports.

He wanted to give his former girlfriend a surprise before Valentine's Day so he hid the necklace inside a CD case and sent it to her.

He reportedly wants her back for good, now that Ben is no longer a threat.

In other "Diddy" news, Sean Combs was in a Detroit courtroom yesterday to testify that he did not instruct his handlers to rough up a radio and cable-television host during a 1999 interview.

Roger Mills says he interviewed P. Diddy during the rap mogul's promotional tour for the album "Forever" and that he was beat down by Comb's bodyguards after asking whether Combs had anything to do with the death of rapper Notorious B.I.G. Mills' suit seeks an undisclosed amount as compensation for the attack

More news from EURweb.com

Celeb Lover's Lane: Lover’s Lane: I’ve been breaking stories week after week in this very column about who’s dating whom in the entertainment industry. It’s funny how these stories pop up in other reports and on various radio shows, and people act like it’s their exclusive news. Nonetheless, let’s recap a few relationships that were revealed here first before telling you about a couple more.

I broke news here that Ashanti is dating Nelly; Murphy Lee is dating Christina Milian; Q-Tip is dating Tatum O’Neal; and B2K’s Lil’ Fizz is dating “My Wife & Kids” actress Jennifer Freeman. Speaking of Jennifer… Last week a New York radio station erroneously reported that Jennifer is dating Marques Houston, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I actually had dinner with Jennifer and Lil’ Fizz and know for a fact that the two are a couple.

* As far as new couples are concerned, I’m telling you here first that singer Monica is dating G-Unit rapper Young Buck. The two have been dating for about a month and hooked up after Young Buck called Monica’s label, J Records, and left a message for the singer to call him. Well she did and the two have been inseparable ever since. Young Buck is also the leading man in Monica’s new video for her next single “U Should've Known Betta.” Nope, Monica is not releasing a new CD. This single is featured on her current certified gold album “After The Storm,” which was released on June 17, 2003. J Records is apparently attempting to get a little more mileage out of the disc. (Wouldn’t it be a nice package if Monica went out on tour with Ruben Studdard? Just thought I’d put it out there.)

* “All Of Us” actress Elise Neal, who also starred on “The Hughleys,” is dating football player Matthew Hatchette of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Elise previously dated film director F. Gary Gray (“Set It Off”/“Italian Job“).

* Star Jones got engaged at the NBA All-star game on Sunday night. Her boyfriend Al Reynolds popped the question in the fourth quarter and presented Star with a four-carat diamond ring, while folks like Denzel Washington and producer Jimmy Jam looked on. Star had suspected that Al would propose over the weekend because last Thursday he asked her parents for “The View” host’s hand in marriage. The couple has been dating for four months. Al, a thirty-something Wall Street banker, is apparently a millionaire. Congratulations to the happy couple.

* Which one is it? My sources spotted rapper Chingy with the adorable actress Meagan Goode at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills during All-Star Weekend. I thought the hip-hop star was seeing suddenly sexy former “Cosby” kid Keisha Knight Pulliam. Hmmm. Chingy, you pimp, call me and let me know how it’s really going down.

~ First-time Grammy winner Donnie McClurkin is apparently planning to star in a feature film. Donnie, who had a cameo in “The Fighting Temptations,” is slated to star in a 20th Century Fox film with his buddy and gospel cohort Kirk Franklin. The film is scheduled to begin shooting this year. Donnie also has three songs on the movie soundtrack for Tom Hanks’ upcoming film, "The Lady Killer." The film and soundtrack are set for a March 2004 release.

~ Everybody and their momma were shooting music videos last week in Los Angeles. In addition to Monica shooting “U Should've Known Betta,” Mary J. Blige shot the video for her next single “It’s A Wrap.” Outkast shot a video for the upcoming single “Roses,” and Beyonce is rumored to have had a whorehouse theme for her video to “Naughty Girl,” which was shot last week as well.

Casino Allegedly Alters Rules for Nelly
Fri Feb 20, 8:49 AM ET

By DAVID A. LIEB, Associated Press Writer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A Missouri casino faces a possible $50,000 fine for allegedly giving the rapper Nelly special treatment.

AP Photo

State regulators claim the President Casino on the Admiral let Nelly skirt rules intended to limit the amount of money patrons can bet. The Missouri Gaming Commission proposed the fine Thursday.

The commission alleges the casino violated some 10 state laws and rules while accommodating Nelly, who in the documents is referred to only as the "Patron."

The casino hosted a late-night birthday party last November for Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr. Regulators allege he and his eight-person entourage entered the casino without first getting the required electronic identification cards that limit gamblers to purchasing no more than $500 worth of gambling chips or tokens every two hours. Other rules also were broken, regulators say. {My take maybe this is why Jamie Foxx and his entourage were appalled at Harrahs asking them for their ID... :rolleyes: }

Gaming Commission executive director Kevin Mullally confirmed that the patron in question was Nelly. He said Nelly is not being targeted for penalties because it is the casino that is responsible for upholding state gambling laws.

The casino has 30 days to appeal the case to a state administrative hearing office, which would gather more evidence and make a final recommendation to the Gaming Commission.

Ralph Vaclavik, President Casino's senior vice president and chief financial officer, said casino officials still are looking into the incident.

Nelly publicist Juliette Harris of Los Angeles said Nelly did not intentionally skirt Missouri's gambling policies.

The Grammy winner's hits include "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma."

WHITNEY HOUSTON PREGNANT?
Whitney Houston has stunned fans by reportedly declaring she's pregnant in front of a concert audience in Russia.
The singer, 40, performed at St Petersburg's Ice Palace on February 8.

Local reports say she put her hand on her stomach and declared, "This song is for (my daughter) Kristina, and also for my future baby, who I have here."

She later broke down in tears when she dedicated a song to her late father John.

Houston has yet to confirm or deny whether she is expecting what would be her second child and husband Bobby Brown's fifth.

CHOREOGRAPHER'S ROMANCE WITH BRITNEY 'RUINED MARRIAGE'
Britney Spears' former choreographer Columbus Short has blamed his romance with the pop beauty for ending his marriage.
Britney, 22, and 21-year-old Columbus made headlines last year, after they were photographed in a range of locations around the world looking very close.

At the time, they denied being romantically involved, but now Columbus tells Star magazine in an exclusive interview, "It's true I slept with Britney, (but) we never had sex," because another person was in the room at the time.

He explains, "We shared a bed (and) were really close, kissing and hugging. There was a chemistry between Britney and me like I've never known before.

"Britney and I got on great both on and off stage. We both have lots of energy, and she is really fun to be around. It was tough for me because I didn't understand the press would react so quickly, and my wife was expecting our first child."

When the pair jetted to Europe, their romance deepened when they were seen cavorting around the Hotel Hassler in Rome.

He says, "We were thousands of miles apart and she was expecting a baby, and these stories kept springing up. It would be fair to say my relationship with Britney caused major problems in our marriage. Sadly, we're now getting divorced."

And while Columbus was dumped as a choreographer by Britney's management in favor of Jennifer Lopez's ex-husband Cris Judd after the pop beauty's mom Lynne made moves to end their romance, he still pines for the sexy singer.

Columbus, who now teaches dance classes in Japan, adds, "Despite everything that happened I'll always remember those special moments with Britney, and I know in my heart if things had been different, we might have ended up together."

HOW OLD IS ASHTON KUTCHER?
Hollywood hunk Ashton Kutcher's real age has come under close scrutiny, after an investigative team of reporters found him to be four years older than previously believed.
The star claims to have turned 26 on February 7, but journalists at the tabloid the National Enquirer have discovered a document they insist proves he's actually 30.

According to hordes of press clippings, actor Christopher Ashton Kutcher was born on February 7, 1978, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. But Los Angeles County Registrar's voter registration records show a Christopher Ashton Kutcher who was born in Iowa and currently resides in Beverly Hills, Calif., with a birth date of February 7, 1974.

If Kutcher really is 30, his age difference with 41-year-old girlfriend Demi Moore would only be 11 years.

The actor's representatives insist his listed age as 26 is correct.

Bobby Brown back in jail
Saturday, February 21, 2004 Posted: 1:27 PM EST (1827 GMT)

DECATUR, Georgia (AP) -- Singer Bobby Brown is back in jail for violating his probation on a prior drunken driving conviction.

Brown, 35, was being held Saturday without bond at the DeKalb County Jail, sheriff's spokeswoman Mikki Jones said. He was taken into custody after appearing before a judge Friday, but officials could not confirm exactly what Brown had done to violate his probation.

He was expected to remain jailed until a court hearing on Friday.

The judge's ruling may have been related to Brown's charge of misdemeanor battery in December, following an argument with his wife, singer Whitney Houston. A preliminary hearing in that case was set for May 5.

Brown left the R&B group New Edition in the late 1980s for a solo career. He has been on probation since January 2003, when he was convicted of a 1996 drunken driving incident. Brown had been ordered to remain on probation until February 17, 2005.

Brown's hits include "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step."

***************

Okay, two questions: 1.Why can't his behind stay out of jail? and 2. How come they listed two of "Brown's hits" and they were both aeons ago? :p For the unborn child's sake, I hope Whitney is NOT preggers... If she is, I pray she cleans up her act... QUICKLY!

Could it be that Grammy-licious Beyonce Knowles won't end up being Mrs. Jay Z after all? RWDmag.com reports that, despite Jay-Z telling Lyor Cohen at his recent farewell bash that he planned to marry Beyonce. She claims that she has no immediate plans to walk down the aisle and has no idea who her ideal man is. The pair have been dating since singing together on the track titled "03 Bonnie & Clyde" in 2002, although both have always refused to publicly comment on their relationship.

Jay-Z made the surprise announcement of his plans to marry Beyonce at a January 28 record company party, during a speech directed at the then-departing Def Jam boss Lyon Cohen, saying, quote, "You've been one of the best friends I could have had ... Ohhhhjjjjjj....

BRIDGETON, Mo. - O.J. Simpson (news) has been ordered to hand over any earnings from a private autograph-signing event to the mother of Ronald Goldman because of a civil verdict that found Simpson liable for his slaying.

Simpson, served with the court papers Saturday before he left the St. Louis suburb of Bridgeton, suggested he would not pay anything to Ronald Goldman's mother, Sharon Rufo.

It was unclear whether any autographs were signed, however, since the organizer canceled the event before it began upon learning Rufo lived in the area.

Simpson said no money exchanged hands because the autograph signing was handled through a promoter in Florida.

Jack Pook , a sports memorabilia marketer who arranged the signing, declined to comment Sunday night. (What, his name isn't POOKIE?) :p

Simpson was acquitted of murder charges in the 1994 stabbing deaths of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Goldman. A civil jury in 1997 held the former football star liable for the killings and ordered him to pay the victims' survivors $33.5 million.

Rufo, who lives in St. Louis County, says in Circuit Court documents that she has not collected any of her $1.27 million portion of the settlement.

On Saturday, Simpson told St. Louis television station KTVI that jurors in his criminal trial "said I was innocent."

"I will do what the law says, but outside of that, I wouldn't go out of my way to give them a dime," he said of family members of his late wife and Goldman.

Rufo's attorney, Katharyn Davis, and a sheriff's deputy served Simpson a court order after tracking him down at a Bridgeton hotel.
Davis said she was confident the order will lead to some reimbursement for her client.

"His assistant told me nobody cares about this any more. I told O.J. and his assistant that I would personally make sure there was a writ against him in every state in this country," Davis said.

her fiance is big time now that's he's been parodied on SNL.

They showed it on the View today. It was so funny. Star thought it was funny, but said the clothes and hair were tacky and she's sending her people over to help. She mentioned that Al didn't care for it, but she asked him what did he expect. He proposed at the All-Star game, he's public now.

Ashanti Promises New Sound, New Flavor On Next LP

"They captured all of the bad things that happen, like if ... my skirt flips the other way and backwards. It's all about seeing who I am as a person." — Ashanti

In between her two new acting projects, Ashanti has been working on her music and has already recorded three songs for her next album.

Though she won't reveal who's producing, she said there'll be a host of new talent working on the record, which will be lyrically deeper than her 2002 self-titled debut and last year's follow-up, Chapter II. "It's a new sound, a new flavor," she said. "I definitely want to touch on more topics that I didn't touch on with the first and the second record. It's a wonderful thing to have so many new people come to the label and bring so much more talent."

Ashanti's also excited about her upcoming remix album, due in April. The first single will be a remix of "Breakup 2 Makeup," and the disc will feature three or four previously unheard songs, including one called "Show You." In addition, Ashanti recently sang on the first single from Lloyd, the newest addition to the Inc.'s roster.

"I feel like a very blessed person," Ashanti explained. "I have a lot of people that love me and I'm surrounded by great, genuine people that help me, and we all work hard. It's taken such a long time to get here, so we're just very happy that it's working out the way it is."

As for her movie projects, Ashanti recently wrapped a shoot in India for the upcoming "Bride and Prejudice," a comedic remake of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."

"That was bananas," Ashanti said of the film, which also stars Marsha Mason ("2 Days in the Valley"). "I'm playing an Indian songstress performing on a beach in Goa. And I had to actually sing in Hindi. They thought I was Indian because I was singing with the little twang that they have, so it was definitely a life-altering experience."

And she's currently working on "Coach Carter," a basketball film that stars Samuel L. Jackson as the real-life school basketball coach who benched his team for poor academic performance. The movie, which will also feature 3LW member Adrienne Bailon, is due in theaters this October.

"My character's name is Kira, and she is the girlfriend of one of the basketball players on the team," Ashanti said. "Me and him have a little problem that needs to be solved. I'm not gonna tell you what it is. You gotta go see it. The script is really good."

If that's not enough screen time for Ashanti fans, the R&B chanteuse will also be releasing a DVD later this year full of performance shots and behind-the-scenes footage. "It's incredibly funny," she said. "They captured all of the bad things that happen, like if my shoe comes off or my skirt flips the other way and backwards. It's all about seeing who I am as a person and the things we go through to make the show happen."

She may deserve a long vacation, but Ashanti's not about to rest. She's constantly working on her music, continues to receive scripts in the mail, and is planning a summer tour with Ja Rule and Lloyd. "I don't want to spread myself too thin," she said. "But I want to get out there while the getting is good."

411 for the week of February 23rd, 2004

Hold that wedding dress! Friends of television hostess Star Jones are urging her to take her time with her new fiancé. Last week after a four-month courtship, Star became engaged to investment banker Al Reynolds. He gave her a five-carat ring. One day after the engagement news stories came out questioning Reynolds' romantic past and sources say he has been less than honest about his past preferences. Will Star take heed? She's head over heels in love? Will Barbara Walters, the producer and head honcho of the popular daytime show The View, speak up? Will she urge Star to slow down and check out her boyfriend's past? Barbara cannot afford to have a scandal like this ruin the reputation of her show no matter how bad Star wants to get married.

Wait here's another "hold that wedding dress!" Spokespeople for Diana Ross say she is not engaged to be married to Liza Minelli's "ex ," David Gest. David announced that last week that he and Diana were in love and would be married in two years. This was all wishful thinking on behalf of Gest. Yes it's true he and Diana bonded over her recent troubles…the drunk driving arrest, her ex-husband's death and problems with drinking, but they are not romantically involved. I have to admit when I heard this the first thing that came to my mind was is she drinking again? Gest would love to marry Diana Ross. He's a scam artist always on the hunt for "Sugar Mommies." Gest is currently suing his "ex," Liza Minelli for $10 million. He claims during their 16-month marriage he endured brutal beatings by Liza. He says she would go into drunken rages and beat him. He says he suffers from head pains and he will have to take medication for the rest of his life. During his marriage to Liza they never had sex. Years ago Gest was involved with actress Ruth Warrick. She is best known as "Aunt Phoebe" from the soap opera All My Children. Warrick says she dated Gest for over 12 years and they never had sex. Warrick was 35 years older than Gest, but he didn't care. He loved the publicity and the money. Diana is currently preparing for her European tour. She will tour the states this summer.

Janet Jackson has hooked up with the hottest producer/hip hop artist of the moment. Kanye West is topping the charts with his latest project and he's about to start up his own record label. In addition to his own hip hop projects he is an established writer. He is the force behind the Alicia Keys hit "You Don't Know My Name." Kanye has co-produced Janet's new song "I Want You" along with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Janet's new CD, Damita Jo comes out on March 30th. On March 20th she will be performing on the Soul Train Music Awards. Janet looks great on the cover of her new album. Janet is no stranger to plastic surgery. She's been getting it since she was 14 years old. Janet has had her nose done twice plus cheek and chin implants, breast augmentation and liposuction.

Luther Vandross' recovery may take up to two years. It's been almost a year since his near fatal stroke. He is undergoing occupational therapy learning how to feed himself, take a bath… basically learning how to live again. Luther gets around in a wheelchair and he can talk on a phone if someone holds it up for him. He also suffers from short-term memory loss.

Is Whitney Houston pregnant? Whitney was on stage in Russia and during her concert she announced she was pregnant. Reps for her record label say this is news to them. They say that they know nothing of a pregnancy. During the past year pregnancy rumors have been swirling around the troubled diva. She was reportedly pregnant last year and due last fall but nothing happened. Is she pregnant now or is her stomach bulging because she's bloated? Meanwhile where is her husband Bobby Brown? He's in jail again. Bobby was jailed on Saturday for violating his probation. No word on what he did this time to land him back in the slammer, but he will be there all week.

The Soul Train Music Awards air March 20th. Alicia Keys and Babyface are hosting. Beyonce is leading the pack with four nominations. Some of the scheduled performers include Beyonce, Janet Jackson and Outkast. Luther Vandross, Erykah Badu, Jaheim and R. Kelly are also up for numerous awards.

Alicia Keys recently gave a revealing interview to American Magazine. American Magazine is a new magazine and Alicia talked about being in an abusive relationship with a gun toting older man. Alicia was a no show at the launch party of the magazine and sources say it's because she regrets talking about that part of her past.

Singer Gerald Levert is heading up a campaign to get his father's group The O'Jays inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. It is too late for this year, so they are trying for next year. Gerald has all the info on his website GeraldLevert.com . In other Gerald news, later this year he makes his big screen debut with Queen Latifah in the movie Beauty Shop. Now speaking of the O'Jays they will be reuniting with Philadelphia songwriting legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to complete a collection of lost studio recordings.

Patti LaBelle has a football team. The LaBelle Community Football League is a sports program aimed at males 18 and over.

At the movies it's Against the Ropes with Meg Ryan, Omar Epps, and Charles S. Dutton. Dutton also directs. In a recent interview Epps talked about Puff Daddy and his upcoming Broadway debut in "A Raisin in the Sun." Epps says Puffy is not a great choice for the role. Epps also says it's stupid for him (Puffy) to be in the production even though Puffy was in the award winning movie Monsters Ball. He says he wasn't impressed with Puffy in the movie. What's going on here? Why is Omar hating on Puffy? Is he against rappers who want to act? Is he upset because Puffy will be staring on Broadway against his "ex," actress Sanaa Lathan? Omar and Sanaa dated for three years. Is Omar upset because Puffy used to manage his current fiancée, Kiesha Spivey? Keisha sang in Puffy's group Total and she is currently pregnant by Omar. I thought it was odd that Omar would be making such harsh comments about Puffy…sounds personal to me.

Mariah Carey is not impressing fans overseas with her latest concerts. Sources say she changes her clothes more than she sings.

Chilli, from the group TLC, speaks out about her breakup with Usher. The on again/off again relationship is officially off. After dating for almost three years, it's over. Chilli says Usher did not dump her. She claims Usher betrayed her and she will never forgive him. She says he's a liar and she never wants to see him again. Chilli is nine years older than Usher and she wanted to settle down and get married. Usher has a new album coming out next month called Confessions and he sings about the breakup. Usher says he had to be true to himself and that's why they are no longer together.

Look for the Nation of Islam to play a smaller role in Michael Jackson's life. Michael's ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, was very upset about Michael's involvement with the religious organization. Debbie is Jewish and she had threatened to take her children away from Michael. Michael's two oldest children were by Debbie who signed away her rights to the children for millions of dollars. Michael had embraced the Nation of Islam on the advice of his brother Jermaine, who is a Muslim. They were providing security for Michael, but their presence was upsetting a lot of people including brothers Tito and Jackie who got into a fight with members when they wouldn't let them near Michael. Michael has struck a deal with his "ex" to wean himself from the group, so he can keep custody of his kids. Debbie has already spilled the beans about the kids' parentage, claiming Michael is not the biological father. Sources say these kids were inseminations by someone else. ( No isht Sherlock  ) Lately Michael has been taking advice from his brother Randy who is encouraging him to take a more active role in his life. He wants Michael to be his own mouthpiece and stop relying on so-called friends to talk for him as he fights child molestation charges. In other Michael news rapper Eminem has put in a bid to buy Michaels Neverland Ranch. The 26 hundred-acre estate is going for $49 million. Michael has vowed never to live there again after police raided the home and destroyed it.

From Flo Anthony...

SPEAKING of romance, rumor has it that Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes and Jade Jagger, daughter of Mick, are back together. They dated a year ago, but parted ways. If my memory serves me right, Christina Aguilera fit somewhere in that equation. Anyway, Jade and Pharrell spent a nice Valentine's Day in Manhattan. It was reported that the couple even spent an entire day in his Penthouse Suite at the Four Seasons Hotel with the Do-Not-Disturb sign on the door.

They broke up back in like 2002 or so. But remember he cheated on her a lot.

Soror Star and the cast of The View were on Leno the other night. Star went on about how blessed she is to be 41 and have found a black, investment banker who has his own money and is not worried about hers. I'm happy for her. He's not as cute up close as he looked from a distance, but that is neither here nor there. Happy for her nonetheless.

NFL star Jamal Lewis indicted on drug conspiracy charges
Douglass High grad proclaims innocence

By BILL RANKIN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/25/04

Star NFL running back Jamal Lewis was indicted Wednesday afternoon by a federal grand jury in Atlanta on drug conspiracy charges.

Lewis, 24, a graduate of Douglass High School in Atlanta, is accused of conspiring to distribute cocaine from June 23, 2000, until July 19, 2000.

The indictment, unsealed at 4 p.m., charges the Baltimore Ravens football player with one count of conspiracy to intentionally possess with the intent to distribute cocaine. A second count charges Lewis with using a cellphone to carry out the conspiracy.

The indictment says the conspiracy involved "at least 5 kilograms of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine."

Lewis is innocent of both charges, his attorney said.

"Jamal Lewis denies any involvement in any criminal activity or any activity involving drugs," Atlanta lawyer Ed Garland said Wednesday.

Lewis' co-defendant, Angelo Jackson, was to appear in court for his arraignment. Lewis will surrender to authorities and appear in court at a later date, said Garland.

This past season, Lewis had the second-best single-season rushing total in league history and also set the single-game rushing mark with 295 yards against Cleveland. With his size, speed and power, Lewis is one of the NFL's premier players.

The 24-year-old Baltimore Ravens running back graduated from Douglass in 1997 and played for the University of Tennessee.

Before he arrived on campus in Knoxville, Lewis and a 17-year-old woman were charged with shoplifting from a Macy's store in Cumberland Mall. Store security officers said they observed a clerk slip a $109 polo shirt into Lewis' shopping bag without charging him.

Lewis, then 18, was sentenced to three years of probation, fined $1,000 and granted first-offender status. That sentence allows first-time offenders' criminal records to be wiped clean if they complete their probationary time without incident.

Lewis is the second Baltimore Raven to face serious charges in Atlanta. In 2000, Raven star linebacker Ray Lewis, who is not related to Jamal Lewis, was charged with two other men in the killings of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar in a Buckhead street fight after a night of partying after Super Bowl XXXIV.

During a sensational trial six months later, Ray Lewis pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice. In exchange for murder charges being dropped and a one-year probation sentence, he testified against his two co-defendants, who later were acquitted of all charges.

Jamal Lewis has turned to Garland and his partner, Don Samuel, the same two lawyers who represented Ray Lewis during the 2000 trial.

Jamal Lewis, after graduating from Douglass High, went on to play at Tennessee. He decided to forgo his senior year and was drafted fifth overall by the Baltimore Ravens.

After gaining a team-record 1,364 yards during the 2000 season as a rookie for the Super Bowl champion Ravens, he tore a knee ligament during practice in August 2001 and was lost for the season. It was the second time in four years Lewis underwent major knee surgery.

During that 2001 season, Lewis was suspended four games after violating the NFL's substance and alcohol-abuse policy. At the time, the league said Lewis would lose four game checks.

Last year was Lewis' best as a pro. He fell just 40 yards short of Eric Dickerson's rushing record of 2,105 yards in 1984. Lewis was voted the Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

Martin Hitting Women

Martin Lawrence Accused of Hitting Woman
Associated Press
February 24, 2004

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A woman sued comedian Martin Lawrence for allegedly hitting her in the jaw at a party after she asked him if he'd be interested in attending another party at the Playboy mansion.

Jennifer Palmer sued Monday in Superior Court seeking more than $25,000 for assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Lawrence's publicist, Arnold Robinson, said the accusations are false and ``financially motivated.''

The lawsuit alleges Palmer approached Lawrence at a Jan. 18 party and told him about another party she knew was happening at the Playboy mansion. Lawrence responded by ``wildly waving his hands around, slurring and mumbling in a manner suggesting that he was intoxicated or otherwise disoriented, using very foul language,'' the lawsuit said.

When he heard Palmer telling friends about his behavior, he allegedly confronted her ``in an angry and threatening manner,'' the lawsuit said. Palmer tried to push him away and he allegedly struck her in the jaw.

Witnesses contacted by Lawrence's representatives told a different story, Robinson said.

``An intoxicated and disorderly individual verbally insulted and physically attacked Lawrence without provocation, at which time Lawrence understandably moved to defend himself,'' Robinson said in a statement.

A hearing in the case was scheduled for June 7.

Could someone please tell me why the Feds waited 4 years later to indict this man? Why not do it in 2000 why wait until he is a prominent football player?
