swissmiss04 12-10-2003 09:01 PM

Hey guys! I worked it out w/ Russell and there will be an informal NYC GC get together (plus one southerner) at Chumley's Saturday Dec. 13 at around 2:00. It would be great to see all (or most) of you there. Not to mention it keeps me from wandering the airports all by myself. If you need directions or info PM him.

Munchkin03 12-10-2003 09:26 PM

I will be there, barring a subway "problem." They happen more often than you think. Now, exactly where is Chumley's?

Peaches-n-Cream 12-10-2003 09:35 PM

I thought we were meeting at the Ginger Man. Hmmm I am confused.

It is at 86 Bedford Street.
The phone number is 1-212-675-4449

AEPhiSierra 12-11-2003 10:55 AM

ok now i am confused... SwissMiss said Saturday the 13th for the informal get together at Chumley's and Russell said Sunday. If it's Saturday I probably won't be able to make it because I have a final (depends when I finish) but if it is on Sunday I'll be there. Someone let me know!!

lovelyivy84 12-11-2003 11:23 AM

So there are now two events- one Saturday and one on Jan. 30th.

I'll be there on Jan. 30th, dunno about Saturday yet.

swissmiss04 12-11-2003 11:26 AM

It is indeed Saturday. By Sunday I'll be across the globe and you won't get to meet my lovely charming self. And what do you mean by "subway problems??" I ask this because I plan on taking the subway from Chumley's to JFK. Please tell me this will work out. Regardless I'm giving my self plenty of travel time, but I am now worried. PM me if you need to!

xok85xo 12-11-2003 11:36 AM

i'll think about saturday - it depends if my direct deposit comes on saturday or if i have to wait until monday..

also, i have some serious shopping plans for this weekend..so we'll see what i get done.. i would like to meet swissmiss tho :)

ETA - how close is the restaurant to the path?

xo_kathy 12-11-2003 11:38 AM

Swiss-

I'm too laxzy to go weeding back through the thread and read how much time you've got in between flights, but I think we NYers are doing you an injustice. If it's something like 4 hours, girl, there is NO way you are making it from JFK on the A train on a Saturday, having time to eat a lunch, and make your way back to go through security at the Int'l terminal. Now, I realize I'm making a bunch of assumptions, but we all know Saturdays can throw the subway out of whack and if you have to catch a plane...I don't know, maybe I'm paranoid, but it doesn't sound like the best idea to me. Sorry to be a downer, and anyone else, feel free to correct me if you think what I'm saying is hooey!

AEPhiSierra 12-11-2003 11:52 AM

Darn it!! Now I have to wait until the end of January to meet everyone. My final starts at 11 or 12 I think - if i am lucky maybe I'll get out of my final quickly since its multiple choice. Hope everyone has fun.

It was primarily for me...I live on the Upper West Side and the trains there (1/2/3/9) are always out of whack on the weekend. The A train should be just fine...worst case scenario, you can take it into the middle of Brooklyn and then take a cab into JFK. I think it all depends on the amount of time you have between flights. :)

I'm looking forward to meeting you! I always like what you have to say on GC.

Done.

swissmiss04 12-11-2003 12:49 PM

Wow. The last thing I need to do is miss my plane. But...here's roughly the timeline we're looking at

Swissmiss lands at Laguardia at around 1130
Swissmiss checks her bags in at JFK around 1
Swissmiss catches the subway into the city around 130
Swissmiss makes it to Chumley's around 2
Swissmiss says her goodbyes and departs around 430
Swissmiss makes it back to JFK around 515 or 530
Swissmiss takes off in the giant bird to Egypt at 630

Does this seem realistic? Someone let me know if my times are off. If it's undoable, maybe we can lunch at the airport (how lame am I?!).

swissmiss04 12-11-2003 12:51 PM

Just to add...I'm taking a cab between LaGuardia and JFK. Are there still lockers at JFK to check your carryons and stuff?

AEPhiSierra 12-11-2003 01:37 PM

I don't think you're giving yourself enough time to get from JFK to the city and vice vera. Using the A train with a bus transfer is about 1 hour 15 minutes but with weekend service I would give myself 1 hour 30 minutes to be on the safe side. An alternate route is transfering to the Q10 bus from the E/F in Kew Gardens (forgot the exact name of the stop) but I am not sure how long that takes.

PhiPsiRuss 12-11-2003 02:42 PM

Its Saturday. My bad.

swissmiss04 12-11-2003 04:50 PM

Ok now I'm awfully confused. Someone please tell me the quickest possible ways to get everywhere I need to be. Cabs, subway, bus, whatever. I just need to ensure that I get to JFK before 5:30.

The A train, aside from a cab, is the quickest way.

xok85xo 12-11-2003 05:37 PM

no one answered my question. how far is the path from the restaurant..it looks like the 9th street path isn't far, but i'm not positive.

PhiPsiRuss 12-11-2003 05:49 PM

Less than a 5 minute walk:

For the map, click here.

Peaches-n-Cream 12-11-2003 09:33 PM

SO Chumley's on Saturday at what time? 1:30? Is that good? I am still confused, lol.

James 12-12-2003 12:12 AM

Ok what kind of get together is this . . like a long day of feasting that leads into a night of drunken debauchery?

Or merely a tame lunch or tea time chat?

Last time, because of lovelyivy and cashmere i barely made it home alive :)

Peaches-n-Cream 12-12-2003 01:19 PM

No drunken debauchery for me.

So who is going to Chumley's on Saturday? What tme does it start? When I called Chumley's, I was told they open around 12 for lunch/brunch. The nearest subway is the 1/9 at Christopher Street.

Swissmiss, there is a bus between LaGuardia and JFK. I checked the website and came up with this:

Service Approximate Frequency & Travel Time
New York Airport Service Express Bus
(718) 875-8200
$11 Every 30 minutes
7:00 AM to 8:00 PM
45 minutes

Taxi (Metered)
Go to Uniformed Taxi Dispatcher
$19-$22 On demand
30 minutes

Private Limousine/Van Service
Go to Ground Transportation Information Counter in Airport Baggage Claim Area
Prices vary On demand
30 minutes

Peaches-n-Cream 12-12-2003 04:35 PM

BUMP

So who is going to this? Bueller...Bueller...Anyone...

PhiPsiRuss 12-12-2003 04:40 PM

I'm going

xok85xo 12-12-2003 05:23 PM

don't think i'm making it there tomorrow..

Hey...looks like I'll be doing the cab thing. So what is the name of stop I need to get off of to get to Chumley's? Anyone want to meet me at the stop so I don't wander and get lost?

West 4th Street is the train stop. Call me on my cell phone when you get to the JFK train station, and I'll know when to leave my apartment. Call me again when you get to street level in the Village.

Munchkin03 12-12-2003 08:37 PM

I can be there. I need a break from these damned finals. Exactly where is the restaurant?

Thanks, but I think that its illegal to use the word "swell" in the city limits. ;)

AEPhiSierra 12-13-2003 01:07 AM

Peaches-n-Cream 12-13-2003 02:57 PM

I am walking out the door in a minute. See you there!

PhiPsiRuss 12-13-2003 05:10 PM

I just got back from Chumley's, and made sure that swissmiss04 got into the subway station safe. She should be on the subway to JFK as I write. Munchkin03 and Peaches-n-Cream joined us and we all had a nice time. All 3 are really nice people, and its nice to be able to link an online name with a real person. :)

I look forward to the next NYC GC get-together.

Sahara 12-14-2003 01:51 AM

Hi everybody,
I've been skimming the posts & I wanna come too! There was no way I could have made it to Chumley's, though. Glad you had a good time.

Is the get-together is Friday, Jan. 30th. at Ginger Man for happy hour?
Did I get that right? What time is happy hour?
