People take this isht too seriously. I might write a bitchy post to someone, but it's over to me as soon as I log off GC, and I can have great IM convos with someone who I've gone toe to toe with on the boards. It's all good. :D Unless you're in my Friendster Cluster, on AIM, or LJ, I ain't stressin' ya when my computer's shut down.

I've tried that loophole to block a mod--it just ain't workin. :(

REAL flame posts subtle or not can be seen a mile off, harmless on topic posts should not be treated with the same contempt.
_ Some members can be ignored (via a setting), some cannot. And they know this.

I think this is what some people are talking about...what you perceive as being jumped upon is the smart ass personality the majority of people have on this site. You might not understand it yet b/c you're relatively new.....not trying to be bitchy, just trying to come up with an explanation. Yeah its not ok to be a smart ass all the time, but its what most of us accept as the Chit Chat environment of GC. IMHO, I think it's ok, considering we're all adults. There was a time when we knew where the line was between being sarcastic and ATTACKING someone, but now I think we greatly disagree, probably due to the huge new population on the board.

I have seen situations, where someone either falls "out of favor" with the mods or who comes back (perhaps after banning) - that person might either be "pushed" with inflammatory comments by mods until s/he retaliates and that retaliation is held up as evidence of how terrible that member is. Personally I have noticed of late my threads and others, being jumped upon by certain members, regardless of which forum.
I was just about to agree with you there. I totally think that sometimes people who we know USED to be trouble are treated like animals in cages....we taunt them and pull their tails until we know they'll bite back, then we call them rabid....However, when you threw in the thing about you being jumped upon, you lost me. Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm not going to lie. In some ways I have kind of paid attention to your situation b/c your confrontation has to do with a good friend of mine, Damasa...and in some instances he was a dick to you, and in some I think you were being oversensitive (I know you're like where the hell does she get off??? but I'm going somewhere with this...) The face that you just threw your 'getting picked on' with banned people getting taunted kind of discredits your statement because they are two totally different things.

Quote:

I know one of the times pike was banned, after it was a mass buildup, he said "fat rice eating mouth" to a girl that was asian [unquote]. Now that sort of remark is not called for. That is without question bannable. However, the subsequent screen-name of this person sverige **in and of itself ** did not say anything similar (rest assured if he had I would have had said something on principle :p ). Yet this screenname was banned for posts that were they made by other members might not have resulted in a banning?
Oy I SO don't want this to be a Sverige thread b/c I actually think we might be able to go somewhere with the rest of this....but...He came back, and while we were all yelling that it was him, people were like, give him a chance, he hasn't done anything yet. Maybe you had to be around before, but his random "trick and ho" stories gave him away in a second. He said the rice comment, and was out of here. I think that would have happened to any of us that behaved that way.

Anyway, for the record, I did read your whole post and I am not trying to be offensive or bitchy. I'm just wanting to keep the decent discussion going.

Optimist Prime 09-05-2003 05:08 AM

A greek chat hirearchy. That sounds like a caste system. I'm against it.

justamom 09-05-2003 08:17 AM

Isn't this interesting! I haven't a clue about the majority of issues
being referenced. However, I do have an opinion on a few of the topics.

I too have felt like I would like to change my ID at times, take off the gloves and say what I think less all the PC BS that at times, takes precedence over the thought.

I have seen points/arguments that are so clearly credible, yet because the poster is not "popular", masses of people swarm to flog the messenger.

One thing I can say is within my GLO on GC, we have disagreements on issues one day and in harmony the next. I do not hold a grudge because someone has a different way of looking at things. Lots of people on GC hold grudges. Yet some GLOs, "cliques" and at times, Mods will fly to support one of their own-right or wrong-to the point of a thread being edited/locked/deleated or an opinion becomes so twisted, it isn't even recognizable.

There are too many "cry babies" who run to the Mods because their feelings got a bo bo. I may post "I don't like cats", everyone who loves "cats", or love the PEOPLE who love "cats" will take that statement and by the time the thread is locked-I have been turned into a kitty killer with a bloody club in my hand and a deceased kitten's head hanging over my fireplace.

I have been on two threads that have been locked...all within a span of a few weeks. WOW, AM I turning into a controversial person??? Kind of neat! LOL! I will not second guess the locking, but I didn't see the need at that point. Yet, I wasn't the one bombarded with complaints.

WHY DO SO MANY FEEL A NEED TO RUN AND "TATTLE" TO A MOD OVER EVERY LITTLE THING???

I would bet my bottom dollar if there was a forum that was completely void of PCness and "No holds barred", it would dwarf the other forums in no time...

Many do take GC too seriously.

Dionysus 09-05-2003 09:37 AM

This is just a hot mess. :p

Ummm yeah I agree w/ those who say that some take GC a little too seriously. Did some of you graduate from Uptopia High and now attend University of Utopia? Some of you act like you have never came into contact with drama queens, clicques, boneheads, people who play favorites, or people who just simply disagree witho you. I'm talking about both "sides" here.

Agreed.

I know I have tended to the more controversial threads in the past, but I can honestly say that I've never run to the mods about what was said for anything. If I disagree I am far more likely to just SPEAK UP about it.

And I would do it with my own name too, no hiding because I might not say the nice or popular thing.

Whoever started this thread- you are such a wimp. It's hard to take anything you say seriously because you're not even willing to admit who you are.

ETA: I would be far more interested in a hierarchy thread that addressed the fact that there are clearly two GC's, a black one and a white one. Not that I believe that it will change (nor do I want it to change- black GC is my family), but it seems like people don't talk about it.

Brown people tend to go with whatever Panhel they're a part of- like Starang is on our boards, but most of the Asians are in NPC orgs and thus stay on the other side.

Firstly in reference to this "fight". Just so you know, to give you the background - I bumped the GreekChat Crush thread with a post, my post contained something like "It's all about page 54". That remark was a gently humorous play on page 66 of that aforementioned thread which had dialog ending with "It's all about page 66 baby!" or similar. Thus, me saying "[no!] it's page 54 baby" - (page 54 being my own on-topic post for that thread) was just a jokey reference to another post. All a throwaway comment that was scarcely worth talking about. Sadly this was taken a particular way or something was read into it that was lost on me. Sadder still some people chose to "applaud" the animosity... fortunately those later people were members I could use the Ignore feature on. (As an aside I wouldn’t say it was just a picture, it was a comment made by a picture). This particular exchange was, however, just another occurrence of the type of thing you describe, cashmoney. And I realise this hierarchy thread was created about a broad issue not a thread.

In reference to my picture, it was a joke, you chose to take it as more than that, that wasn't my fault in the least. But I'm glad you did because honestly you were getting annoying with your "oh page 54 posts." You made two in a row (one which you later deleted) and I find it annoying when people tend to "fish for attention."

My picture said "this is the room of people who care." Nothing more, but you chose to say to me "piss off asshole" which didn't help anything. If you were to lighten up a little bit you might see the bigger picture?

DeltAlum 09-05-2003 11:48 AM

A word for the mods...

For the most part, they do a good job of trying to keep things under control without a lot of tools with which to work.

And, I know that there has been (probably is) some unpleasantness even within their ranks.

Like any system I can think of, this one isn't perfect. But would anarchy be better? Well, maybe sometimes -- but not all the time.

I had a recent instance (just last night, in fact) where a mod was so on top of things that he/she (won't name names) deleted some posts that were really inappropriate -- and my responses to them which might not have been appropriate either. The moderator wrote to me suggesting I take further action -- which I chose not to do because I wasn't all that happy about the way I reacted to the situation. (Although, in retrospect, I'm not sure anything would have changed my mind)

The moderators actions are subjective. I've said before, that all things considered, I think they do a pretty good job.

As to a hierarchy on GC, maybe that's true. There are certainly cliques. So how is that different from the rest of life? Some people simply get along better with certain others.

It ain't perfect, but it also isn't the end of the world.

I think this is what SensuretI was indirectly trying to get people to talk about in his thread "I don't understand..."

INTERSTING TOPIC. Now that it is straightforward, are there any takers?

btw, I could care less about a GC hierarchy, cliques, people who don't like me, etc. I post what I want when I want and I won't hold my tongue. That being said, I DO respect the rules (any mature adult realizes that life has RULES and if you want to participate in something you kinda have to follow them...OR ELSE). I TRY not to knowingly insult members of GC (although I am human and sometimes my temper gets the best of me), but I also will stand my ground on things I feel strongly about.

Bottom line: Who really obsesses about a "GC Hierarchy"? cashmoney, I would post under another name too, because seriously? That is pretty lame. I would really hope you have more pressing matters in your life than this.

I don't see anything wrong with a "white GC" and a "black GC." I still post on both, although I don't post as often on "black GC." I will tell you that I enjoy the bglo boards a lot more. I think those mods do a great job and the topics pretty much stay in line.

You know, I do agree. There isn't anything inherently "wrong" with having a somewhat segregated GC. Like Steeltrap said on another forum, that is LIFE. I guess it is just interesting to note that it exists. Don't ask why, lol.

You don't know about Ollie's!!!!!

There are three locations that I am familiar with. The best one IMHO is right off of Lincolnc Center, like 64th or 65th and Broadway.

Ollie's in Lincoln Center is also just a great space. Really nice and good service. I have heard bad stories but never had a problem when I go there.

And try the Singapore Mei Fun, but only if you have some sort of tolerance for spice!

I'm assuming (and I could definitely be wrong) that this is referring to me. If so, I'm pretty offended by that.
I've heard certain mods are concerned, and they should be. But none of them have contacted me, so what is the appropriate thing to do?
Apparently I'm the only one who's going to say something out of the 20+ of us that know. If that's the case than so be it.

But especially after the way this thread has been going, I'm a little hesitant to post all this crap in a thread.
This is something that's been going on for awhile, and several people have backed me up in this thread and over pms.
I want to handle everything in the best way but I think it's a rough situation no matter what.... but I don't appreciate being compared to some blond 7 year old with a lisp from the 70's.....(if you were referring to me
:) )

Unregistered- 09-05-2003 04:16 PM

The appropriate thing to do now is to stay out of it until the person in question is confronted.

The mods who are also members of the GLO have been contacted, Headquarters has been contacted, and I think discussion should be limited at least until the mod in question is confronted by these members.

I only know this information because I was told this IN CONFIDENCE, and I was really shocked to see this revealed publicly because it is a VERY sensitive situation, especially for the members of the GLO involved, the alleged moderator, and others who know this person outside of GC.

So please, even if you discuss this via PM, please be aware of what you reveal. :)
