Can that be considered COMMUNITY SERVICE :eek:---Yall I almost FELL OUT! Needless to say she WASN'T one of my line sisters! I don't get your reaction as a fellow rushee. It was community service and a worthwhile thing for her to do. Now if that is the ONLY thing she did that would be the real problem.

I agree.

But to take it further, I also don't think this should be taken to the extreme. For example I can understand a prospect thinking I am going to the Delta RUSH, so I should indicate that by wearing red and white. I mean there is nothing on our website, or anywhere else that indicates certain colors should not be worn, so it is possible a prospect really would not know.

For example DSTRen, may have been told not to wear black, because the members would be wearing black at the RUSH and it was a matter of distinction.

Very honestly, imo, this whole prohibition of colors (which did not exist when I was a RUSHEE) is just another way to pre-reject folx.

LOL. Colors aside, there is still such a thing as appropriateness, something which far too many people lack these days!

And that to me is the real key.

LG, do you distinguish between service and philanthropy? I would wager that most of my chapter brothers do not, when it comes to the selection of members. (We also do not, as an organization, require proof of community service for membership.)

I did not know there was an issue with aspirants wearing black because at the rushes I attended Sorors did not wear black. A couple of rushees wore red. The Sorors glanced but didn't make a big deal. It did not hurt the young ladies' chances because they were stellar women (and are now stellar Sorors).

Black or grey was a first choice for me as an aspirant because I assumed the Deltas would wear red. I did not want to appear presumptuous or disrespectful. I also didn't want aspirants coming to me asking for applications or anything :). We weren't told what not to wear, they just trusted that we'd have common sense not to wear red--and even wanted to see what colors we'd choose on our own. They just told us business attire/business casual.

We have worn black and we have worn red. But like your chapter we gave little notice to whether aspirants were wearing those colors. I guess as an alumnae chapter it was no big deal.

I hear ya about not wanting someone comungnup to you as a rushee asking for an application - LOL. But now that more controlled.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as an embarassing rush moment per se, since it was (thankfully) whispered and not posed as a general question before the entire group . . . but how about:

"Hey, does that [money] include our line jackets? 'Cause I want a white one. Do we get to pick?"

Rude awAKAning 02-03-2008 02:58 PM

How to get "the look" from the members when you attend formal rush...

When I attended rush, it was the first rush in over a decade. The chapter had been suspended back in '95 for only God knows what! Anyways, at the rush, all the interested young ladies were introducing themselves, getting to know the members, asking questions, etc. When it became my turn, I asked: (and I kid you not)

"What did you guys do to get the chapter suspended for so long!?!"
I then proceeded to say,

"I mean, I've heard several appalling rumors about it, but which ones are true?"

I could've kept going, but lucky for me, another interest pinched me, hard. Of course, I then winced and yelped, "OUCH!"

Good thing the members found humor in it, they now call me "SOROR 'speak now, think later.'"

They did however, (much, much later) give me my answer and said: "Everyone wants to know anyways, good for you for being bold enough to ask!" ;)
I was also advised to learn how to hold my tongue. :D

(((Soror))) :D I don't know how I would have reacted to that question.

dst4lifespr04 04-17-2008 03:18 PM

I remember at my rush...this one girl came in like an hour late with blue jeans a T-Shirt and a bubble jacket on. Then when it got to the question and answer period..she asked if the money could be paid in installments or if they could work out a payment plan of some sort...needless to say she didn't make it on my line...LOL

Gold 04-17-2008 05:32 PM

I do not have a funny rush story but I did not wear red or any colors that would be affiliated with another sorority to an alumnae rush because that was the unwritten rule when I was in undergrad and attended rush.

Now, what I don't appreciate is people wearing jeans or scrubs to rush. (Yes SCRUBS!) I understand that your work environment may be casual or require certain uniform, but change clothes in the bathroom or the car!

Chapter President "What Jacket"

Young Lady: "The Jacket that yall strutt in"

LOL!

Alliam 04-28-2008 12:29 AM

several people came to rush with jeans on, i heard the year before people came in sweats lol thats always embarrasing

TotallyWicked 04-28-2008 11:23 PM

WOW some of these are hilarious!

Someone mentioned babies, my friend went to an AKA Rush two years ago, it was located on my side of the city. She is a mother of three and was unable to find a babysitter so she had to take the kids with, mind you her kids were 2, 3, and 7...and they were ALL going with her. I know it's wrong to laugh but she told me it started at 7 p.m., it was 6:30 when I saw her board the train car I was in and there was no way she would've made it. Lucky for her, the train went express and cut the commute by 20 mins. All the meanwhile, the kids are crying, wandering about getting antsy, as we approached her stop, she saw the bus getting to the station and JUMPED out of the train, one of her kids was still wandering about the car and she ran back to get HIM! LMAO!!!

She said it was a disaster, she was dressed nice for it and all, and she knows how to speak to people, but apparently her kids just couldn't sit still or be quiet throughout the event! Alas, she didn't make it...maybe next time she'll tell folks in advance if they can take care of their kids.

My own rush wasn't too long ago, so I won't describe the "offender" in too much detail but . . .

"Thou shall not argue with the members during the Q&A about how much the fees are - or should be, in your opinion."

That is all.

Thou shalt not use the membership roster from other student organizations to send a text message (an early a.m. one at that) to members of the chapter of your interest and suggest that they have fall intake for those who didn't have funds in the spring, but would still like to be a part of the centennial year.:mad:

Yeah, my jaw is still hanging from reading that one a few days ago! The questions about when/if there will be a line are one thing - but I think that's the first I've heard of a "suggestion"!

CrimsonStar 05-19-2008 06:36 PM

Ok i got one for the BOOKS!

So towards the end of the Interest meeting, the floor was opened for questions and answers.
A Young lady stands and ask
"So i just want to know, when we cross this year, how long before we get our line jackets"

Response- "When WE cross?, im assuming this we included you?"

"Yeah well i mean i know im good i got a 2.73 and my momma was online for Delta, and my daddy he was a Que, i just wanted to know when i need to give ya'll my money for my jacket, does it have to be sent with the fee's money or is it included"

I have to excuse myself to the wall..

Thou shalt not monopolize the time just so people will remember you. Please don't ask us about a presidential election and who AKA supports!

Thou shalt not linger when it is time for you to go. We do not need to know ALL your personal business. Don't sit by me either...we ain't cool like that.

Thou shalt not ask how much anything costs OR ask where the money goes...the answer is nunya.

Thou shalt not bring your baby to rush and then ask if I can watch her while you turn in your stuff. WTF??? Do I look like Daddy Daycare????

I would like to give PMs to any GLO a little advice:

*when attending a rush, at least know a little general info about the org (I attended a rush where only two PMs could answer questions that came off the national website)

*when asked to answer a question about the org, please dont keep admitting that you don't know anything about the org (how interested can you truly be then)

Can I add a pre-rush rule?

Thou shall not call me and tell me that my cousin gave you the number and you wanted to know when is the next line?

Thou shall not say, oh you're a Delta, I am going to be a Delta too. This is not Dr. Pepper!:mad:

Thou shalt introduce thyself to members at events if you're a serious interest. This goes for collegiate and post-baccalaureate interests. Yes, you're at the event. Yes, you're volunteering to assist. Yes, you're smiling. No, most of us don't have a clue who you are. It is not the job of the one person you knew beforehand to introduce you to everyone. It's time to start networking.

naraht 05-13-2009 12:17 PM

Sort of from the other side

At one rush event for my chapter (in Pittsburgh), the head staff member for Western Pennsylvania showed up and even though he was wearing his brother pin, one of the members of the chapter went up to him and started the spiel on finding out whether he was interested in pledging...

To be fair, the guy was in his early thirties, but looked somewhat younger.

E.O.S. 05-14-2009 08:07 PM

Soooooo,
The game Deal or No Deal was being played. One person at the rush kept yelling...."NO DEAL" to every statement:

She would say, "Lifetime commitiment, huh, NO DEAL!".
"Sisterhood, huh, NO DEAL!". and so on and so forth.
Why did you even bother to come? Then she asked, "Can I take one of these to give to my friend, too?
