I don' t know anything about body for your life. I hope someone can help you out with that information.

As me for and ATKINS...I GIVE UP!! I'm joining Weight Watchers. I've lost a lot of weight with WW before. Those who are still on Atkins, continue with the updates, as I continue with mine as well. Y'all, I have to loose (sp?!) 25 lbs. by Feb. My brother is getting married to my LS. See, they were suppose to get married in June, but they got pregnant, so it has jacked things up for E'RYBODY!!! :D I'm teasing. But, I do need skrength to loose this weight!:D

lovelyivy84 10-20-2003 09:29 AM

Good luck delph!

I hope you have better luck with WW! It's a good system too, and does a lot in terms of teaching people about portion control and moderation. I would suggest doing a lot of reading up on the system, etc. first though, because you apparently yo-yoed on this diet previously (lost the weight, gained it back) and you don't want to spend your money on something that won't have long term results.

I didn't pay for any one diet plan when I lost my weight, what worked was reading about ALL of them, and trying to push it into something that could work for my life.

And being active. Really, really active.

Are you working out? Because it is much easier to say no to cheesecake when you know it will sabotage that hour of work you just put in on cardio!

Don't stop posting about your progress.

Thanks lovelyivy!! 'Preciate it! I do work out, but I want to become MORE active. I had to cut the gym because I couldn't afford it any more, so I do TAE BO. Now, that's a great way of working out, but I prefer getting out and going to the gym. It makes me feel better. Yeah, I lost weight using WW, but gained it back. I think the difference now is that I'm ready for the lifetime change. This isn't temporary for me any more, you know. So I will keep you posted on my progress because I'm gonna do that dang on thing! :D

Good luck with WW, delph!

I'm still hanging in there. I got some Atkins goodies at GNC yesterday, and made banana nut muffins - mmmmm :) and only 2g carbs each :)

Now, to get back into a proper exercise routine, with weights and all. I've been doing a few minutes on the exercise bike now and then, and taking walks, but that's not enough.

It's back up now.

lovelyivy84 10-20-2003 12:27 PM

Necessities for a good home gym:

1. One good piece of cardio equipment (elliptical trainer/bike/treadmill/that Gazelle thing). Sears has great sales on all of these items, a fairly good quality piece of equipment for 200-500 dollars. You can find them on ebay as well, or at a local sports equipment store. For the best bargains I like sears though- you can order online and pick the item up at your local Sears. No shipping charge that way!

2. Weights- A beginner's set is 5,10,15 lbs. Anything less is really a waste of time IMO. A barbell can come in handy too for exercises like squats and deadlifts. Sears has these as well, but you can also find some fairly expensive items on ebay (bowflex, etc.- it's harder to find free weights or barbells on ebay). Caveat emptor- you will have to buy from someone in your area as shipping on 50 lbs of weights is NO JOKE.

A new Bloomingdale's opened in Atlanta over the weekend and I had the opportunity to go to to a preview day. I was so upset shopping in the "Big Girls" section I didn't know what to do! Actually I did! I went out and bought the South Beach Diet book and I am starting it this week. I need to go shopping for the right foods to get ready, but hopefully I can do that by Wednesday or Thursday. Anyone else tried this diet? I thought about doing Atkins, but the high fat content concerned me.

Tell us about the South Beach Diet. I've never heard of it at all.

I've just started reading the book, so I can't give you all of the ends and outs, but from what I have been told, SB is less carb restrictive and more fat restrictive than then Atkins. For instance, while the Atkins says eat up on bacon and cheese, the SB advocates Canadian or turkey bacon (less fats) and low fat cheese. SB says it is not low fat or low carb, but that it reduces or eliminates the "bad" fats/carbs from your diet. Something about the gycemic index of foods...I don't have the book with me at work so I can't remember exactly!

I became interested in it after seeing a Dateline story on diets. They profiled the Atkins, the Zone and South Beach and folks that are diet lovers, even though they are not overweight. Anyway, the experts on their panels said of all of the diets the South Beach was the healthiest for you. SB also has 3 phases, like, I think, Atkins.

Hope that helps! I'll let you know how it goes!

I hope you are past your second week of ATkins before eating those muffins.

www.atkins.com shopping section and recipe section will let you know what you can have during what stage. I started back on Tuesday-10/14/03 and Saturday 10/25/03. I lost those 7 lbs plus 2 extra. I would suggest staying in induction for a month. During induction, you can have those breakfast bars, shakes, and advantage bars--NOT THE CANDY SNACKS< CHIPS< MUFFINS. I suggest go to website and see what you can have before you go out and buy anything. Also during induction stick to regular foods first. That is how I lost so quick during last week.

Of course! :) I started with a nice clean induction without low-carb treats (muffins, bread, snack bars, etc). I've been on Ongoing Weight Loss for a week now.

In my view, it's ok to have something occasionally, for some variety - better a low-carb muffin than one laden with sugar. But you can't overdo the treats, or allow them to set off a carb-fest. If you think that's going to happen, don't have the treat.

Hi sorry to board crash and to revive an old post, but I wanted to say that I have been off Atkins since I started living in the house because of all the spaghetti and the potatoes every night and gained about 8 of my 16 pounds back...

I got fed up tonight and started back up.

Wish me luck.

feu_declipse 11-18-2003 08:15 PM

I'm just going to admit it to myself. I will not begin any diet until the beginning of next quarter.

I wasn't on the Atkin's diet but I did minimize my carb intake. How about school got busy and all nighteers started - so the proper diet flew out the window. :(

Now Thanksgiving and Xmas are coming up, so I won't even lie to myself. I'll just take a jump rope with me wherever I go and hope staring at it will inspire me to actually jump a few times:D Hopefully, I'll be soo busy this break, that I get some exercise somehow.

Not Pregnant

*sorry to crash your board, but I thought you might want to hear this.*

Two months ago yesterday, I looked like I was 5 months pregnant... and I'm a guy! That was it. I was up to 216 pounds. I went on the Atkins Diet, and I now weigh 194 pounds.

It hasn't been easy. No one ever told me that eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's and a bag of Terra Blue chips after 10:00 pm 2-3 nights a week would cause me to gain weight. I live in Manhattan and this makes it easier and harder. There are sooooo many good restaurants around. The Mr. Softee ice cream truck is always on the street, as are hot dog vendors, falafel stands, etc. And no more pizza. It wouldn't be a big deal if I was living back in Florida, but the pizza in NYC is really good. And I see people walking on the streets eating slices all the time. No more Cantonese won ton soup with egg noodles; my all time favorite food when done right. You can only get this quality of won ton soup in the US in two cities, NYC and SF. And I live a 10 minute walk from Chinatown.:(

The up side is that I feel better. Those periods of fatigue that I would get in the late afternoon are gone. I can function better on less sleep if I have to, but I still need my sleep. And best of all, my clothes have begun to fit me properly. :)

I'm going to bring my weight down, all the way down to my fighting weight of 160 pounds.;)

The best part of the Atkins Diet is that, at my current rate of weight loss, I'll be able to float in 19 months.:D

SigKapKatzue 11-18-2003 10:51 PM

Day two of being back on the wagon, I have had pretty decent low carb items-- however not stringent, more like low carb high fiber whole grain crackers, peanut butter, grilled chicken, tons of veggies, veggie/shrimp stirfry-- I hope this is going okay.

Congratulations to you!!! That's something that you should really be proud of. Please continue to come back to the thread and keep us posted. Personally, I feel like The Atkins Diet is NOT for me. I joined Weight Watchers, and I've been doing well on that. Of course, with WW the weight is not going to come off as quick, but I don't have a problem with that.

Any more success stories?

For Atkins folks:

GNC has a great Atkins store now. THey have a wise variety of items- from candy to muffins, to rolls, to PASTA! I went there and bought a bag of lo-carb pasta. I dont remember the carb content, but a serving has 28g of protein and 8g of fiber!!!!!!

I am making a baked ziti tonight and I won't feel at all guilty about it! :D :D

Will let you all know how it tastes.

I saw that! I may have to get one of their gold cards :)

Let me know how it comes out. My luck with lowcarb pasta hasn't been very good - I can only stomach it if I make mac and cheese (and cheese and cheese) or something similar.

The Atkins lemon poppy seed muffins are yummy :)

The trick is to make sure the muffins, pasta, candy, etc. are just an occasional treat - and to stay away entirely during induction. Also with the candy, if you eat too much, you may not be leaving the bathroom for a while... :o

SigKapKatzue 11-19-2003 04:22 PM

Yes, don't even get me started on the Atkin's (or sugar free reese's in my case) and not being able to stay away from the bahtroom. The tummy cramps are great too.

I normally try to stay away from the fake stuff-- I indulge in the Atkin's bread a bit more then anything else-- but I think keeping it simple is what it's all about.

I have had the book for two years now, I am considering giving it a try now. Since I have had the baby I am just a tad bit to big. I am trying to get back in my pre baby clothes before she turns 1 So I have 4 months to lose the weight!

Honeykiss1974 01-07-2004 02:43 PM

I have been on Atkins (induction phase) since Monday and so far so good! :D

delph998 01-07-2004 03:12 PM

Good job Honeykiss!!

I gave up on Atkins a long time ago. But this is what I'm doing that you all might find interesting. The entire month of January, I'm fasting for spiritual growth and purification. The fast entails:

When I wake up, I drink water with fresh squeezed lemon in it (no sugar). This is suppose to detox your body and make you regular. Not to be nasty, but a lot of us need to be detoxed.

Eat only fruit until noon

Afterwards, eat sensibly

The only thing I'm drinking is water (no pop, juice, tea, etc.)

NO beef or pork

Excercise 3-4 days a week

What do you think?

Keep us posted, Honeykiss, and good luck!:D

lovelyivy84 01-07-2004 03:45 PM

Bad idea. What you are doing is dangerous.

How exactly does drinking water with lemon making you regular? You could increase your water intake without fasting to the same effect. Lemon is a mild diuretic, but that's about all.

Eating fiber makes you regular, and it ain't found in water or lemons. Fruit is a source of fiber, but it's also high in sugar as well and not the best choice.

You should talk to a doctor before fasting. Reading up on it is not enough. A book can't accurately judge your physical condition the way a physician can. Fasting is NOT natural, your body does NOT like it and it should NOT be done for any real length of time (like a month). Some morbidly obese individuals do benefit from drastic caloric reduction, but ONLY when done under a doctor's supervision.

Granted you are not starving yourself, but what you're doing could be very dangerous, and in the long run isn't a good way to lose weight. You'll lose it from lean muscle tissues by starving yourself and as soon as you go back to a more normal way of eating you'll gain back every single pound plus more.

Atkins is a hard diet, and not for everybody. Seeing as how it didn't work for you your best bet is not to fast, but a simple scaling-down of your diet. Limit your caloric intake (within acceptable levels), choose lean meats, whole grans and veggies, and eat smaller portions of everything. Don't diet, change the way you eat for good, otherwise it will NOT work.

Making drastic eating changes without a great deal of care and research is impossible to maintain and in the long run won't help you.

Hmmm. I do drink tap water with lemon (to kill the taste), but I never though about as a fasting aid.

The last time I fasted, I did "Daniel's Fast" in the Bible which consisted of water and vegetables.

After fasting, I though about continuing to do it, but I would add lean protein and fish to it. Talk about no carbs!

I think you should be ok with what you're doing, especially since you are not doing a COMPLETE fast (no food or water). Honestly, your fast sounds no different from any sensible meal plan.

Breakfast - Fruit
Lunch - Sensible meal
Dinner - Sensible meal
Drink lots of water!!

:) I started about 8 hours ago....lol

My family and I went to a restaurant and I was very good. I only ate meats and veggies. Also, I had some tofu. It's hard for me to do this diet, especially since rice is a staple in Korean food. I guess we'll see how it goes!

Wish me luck!

Lil' Hannah 01-09-2004 11:09 AM

Atkins and I have a love/hate relationship. I started again on Monday and I'm doing great with the food, but I have a feeling I'm going to booze it up this weekend and throw everything off kilter. We'll see.

Hey Momma LovelyIvy!!! I should have known you were going to help a sista out!

For the record, I am fasting for spiritual growth, and I decided to eliminate certain foods. I've always drunk water with lemon. I heard it's a good way to flush the system. I don't know why, but it works for me. As soon as I'm done drinking that bad boy...it's on and poppin'!

Also, I'm not fasting to lose weight. I'm fasting for spiritual growth, but will take what you said, Lovelyivy into some strong consideration.

Honeykiss, tell me how you do on your voyage of weight loss.

Everybody else, keep us all posted with the success stories!

LovelyIvy, I can't wait for you to respond to this...you keep it crunk!

Luv y'all!

lovelyivy84 01-09-2004 01:22 PM

Girl you have me worried! Tsk tsk tsk!

Water is an important part of your system. If you don't get enough then you will not be regular, or have painful BM. But as most people get a good amount of water through the foods they eat FIBER is what most people need to concentrate on to stay regular. Water is a health necessity, but replacing meals with water and lemon is just dangerous (and lemon is a mild diuretic, which kinda undoes the point of drinking some of that water IMO, but sometimes people can't drink all they need to without it, so I suppose it's a trade-off).

I have seen people fast for spiritual reasons before, just not for a month. I still say talk to your doctor first! Talk to him about this before making a decision. At the very least I would assume you would need to stock up on nutritional supplements and he could let you know what to look out for. Make sure you have a good multivitamin supplement and I would probably pick up a protein and fiber supplement as well, since by missing out on half of your meals for the day you'll be missing out on all that essential nutrition.

Maybe instead of eating fruit (which is really high in sugar) you could have a meal replacement shake (NOT SLIMFAST!!! NO HOLLYWOOD DIET JUICE!!! NOTHING THAT THEY SELL IN DUANE READE OR RITE AID!!! NOT ANYTHING WITH MORE THAN 10g of SUGAR!! NOT ANYTHING THAT HAS FRUCTOSE IN THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS!!!). Trust me, although they're called meal replacements, they don't come close to replacing actual food, and I doubt they would contradict the intent of your spiritual fast, lol.

Shopping suggestions:
A VISIT TO YOUR DOCTOR
Fiber One Cereal (14g per serving, althought it tastes like dust you might need it) OR Benefiber (tasteless, fairly grit-free supplement, can be added to drinks for increased fiber intake, 3g of fiber per serving)
one soy/egg/whey/casein meal replacement protein supplement- there are tons of these on the market, just don't buy one with a huge amount of sugar
one whey protein supplement for after your workouts (a better body is really 75% about your eating habits for most people)
Vitamins: a multivitamin, a vitamin B supplement, a vitamin C supplement, a Calcium supplement

I don't like the idea of fasting. I know you want to do it for spiritual reasons, but I think that eating that way for an extended period of time could be dangerous. But if you absolutely feel that you must, be safe going about it.

Thanks LovelyIvy!! I drink plenty of water...yesterday alone, I had 16 cups of water. I don't put lemon in my water everytime I drink it. Just in the morning. But I will try those supplements. Thanks for looking out for me!

I'S LUV YA!!!
