Okay, summer rush is mainly a midwestern thing (talking midwest like Kansas...not Chicago), and is pretty much only at the larger schools (Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, K-State...Big XII schools). For us it is the main time during which pledges are signed, and it allows the pledges to move into the house at the beginning of the year (I've never been inside a guy's dorm room while a student at Nebraska...Girl's dorm rooms yes, but never a guy's).

Does the University of Oklahoma do summer rush? I know they have a big rushing event the first week of school, but I haven't a clue if any of the fraternities do it over the summer like you guys do.

The chapters may do it down there, but the type of summer rush I have outlined here is very different from what I hear that Southern Schools use. I obviously don't know because I've never been down to the south or had an opportunity to talk recruitment at length with members of southern chapters. All I know I've learned from GreekChat.

Our summer rush, as I have mentioned is THE major period of new member recruitment. My guess is that at least 95% of all fraternity men at the midwest schools (KU, Nebraska, K-state, Mizzou) join during summer rush.

As I understand Summer rush in the south, it is more of a way to meet guys, maybe sign a couple, but the majority of members are chosen in the fall or winter rush periods. Granted I may be wrong, but this is what I've been led to believe. If I'm wrong WarEagle, then please correct me.

I think that's how the University of Oklahoma does it; they made a huge deal about fall rush over the summer during our "Camp Crimson" (aka freshman camp). They had the presidents of NPC and IFC come talk about Greek life, and I know a shitload of guys went through rush the 1st week of school. We have a very prominent Beta chapter on campus. They're one of the fraternities here that is harder to get into cause a lotta guys wanna pledge Beta. But i really haven't heard much about summer rush here for the fraternities.

steelepike 07-21-2003 04:39 AM

Oklahoma State does summer rush the same way they do Rush where you are Betarulz! And I may not be on the rush team but I live close enough to our rush apartment to be over there four times a week. I see the excitement from our rush chairs over a guy and they feel just like you over summer rush.

At Oklahoma University they are allowed to visit guys over the summer to get to know them and to put a foot forward before the rush week, this helps get rushees a better sense of the guys in the house. But this is not the main way rushing is done nor do the numbers really come from that method.

Betarulz! 07-21-2003 10:17 AM

Another Bid card was given out over the weekend, and the guy said he was going to sign it. Brings total bids confirmed to 22. No other changes to the bid card list.

Betarulz! 07-23-2003 11:14 AM

Okay, looks like 22 is the final number...

the guys from Omaha joined another house together, and i'm kinda pissed about it as are other guys in the house b/c around the time they signed some allegations that the house they signed had been taking guys out drinking before they signed came out...knowing that house, it doesn't surprise me, but it just really sucks when you lose not one but 2 guys to something like that.

I think that the biggest problem with rush violations is that people going through rush don't know what constitutes an infraction and what doesn't.

Anyways, there are 20 bid cards signed and we're just waiting for 2 more in the mail.

We will be having the annual Pledge Party at a bar in Lincoln on the 15th of August (day before actives can move in). This is for most of the guys the first chance they will have to meet their pledge brothers, however as I've said before a lot of them did get to meet each other earlier this summer.

Haven't talked to the rush chairs about formal rush, but I think we'll go through it, just because we're going to be having some open spots in our Pledge wing. 17 of the current 22 will be living in.

So that's all rush fans! Glad I could fill the void of recruitment threads during the first part of the summer.

pinkyphimu 07-23-2003 11:52 AM

that class sounds great!! it stinks about those two guys, but really, it is thier loss! i can't wait to hear about your formal rush!

good luck!

MooseGirl 07-23-2003 12:31 PM

Congratulations on an awesome recruitment!!!!

This thread has been one of the best to follow!

aephi alum 07-23-2003 12:35 PM

Congrats on a successful summer rush! :)

(And thanks for feeding our rush thread addictions ;) )

Keep us posted on fall rush if you decide to go ahead with it.

absolutuscchick 07-23-2003 01:22 PM

Congrats on a successful rush!!

I don't know if it's just me, but the fraternity rush I've seen at USC consists of taking guys out to bars/clubs and drinking with them, while getting to know them (for the most part, there's atleast one house who has a dry rush I believe). I think your system sounds awesome and founded so much more on brotherhood then on impressing guys with good looking girls and alcohol at fun places. I really wish such a system was present at more universities!

Betarulz! 07-23-2003 05:03 PM

Again thanks everyone for the praise of this thread.

As for fall rush...again I stress that for the University of Nebraska it's very small, and more likely that there will be 0 fall rushees than that there will be more than 25. The past two years I wasn't even aware that it was going on at all. If we sign anyone though I'll be sure to let you guys know. Basically fall rush for us will be the rush chairs showing guys the house and very little interaction with any of the brothers, so I won't have much to say about it, unless I happen to get really involved with it by chance.

ZetaMelOU 07-23-2003 09:55 PM

Great job with everything, Beta! I hope you'll have some good feedback about our rush threads coming up in a few months :).

Why pnm's have to sign bid cards? Is it a university thing, because at my school when I was given a bid there was nothing to sign.

I guess it must be a university thing. The pledge and his parents are both required to sign if I remember correctly. The card then has to be returned to Greek Affairs so that they have record of it, and then an updated list of all guys who have signed is sent out to the chapters so that everyone knows that guy is already a member of that house and will stop contacting him. I think part of it also has to do with the fact that guys will get bid cards from many different houses (I got 2, and that is a fairly low number). Some of the top guys in rush can and will end up with cards from most of the houses. I think one of my pledge brothers had close to 15 cards by the end of the summer.

It's a Women's Panhellenic thing, darlin'. Men can feasibly get more than one bid, women only get one bid. The Bid Card thing is a Panhellenic invention. Since you're a guy, you don't need to worry about it! :D

Buttonz 07-24-2003 01:06 PM

I know I had to sign a Bid Card, however, there was nothing about parents needing to sign it...what's the deal with that?

It may be a Panhellenic thing, but for us, you do have to sign. It's just part of accepting the bid and formally joining that house. I honestly think a lot of it has to do with the mulitiple bids so that houses cannot claim a kid who doesn't really want to be there. Also, I know that other places where there is fall rush, a rushee accepts their bid by showing up at a special party or something. Well obviously with summer rush we can't do that because the length of our rush, so in order to make the process orderly and such they have to sign it.

I think the reason for parents signing it is because most of the pledges will be living in the chapter house from Day 1. Since the rushee isn't just living in the dorms and going over to the fraternity house, I think it probably is pretty important that the parent's know what is going on, and the change of living quarters is a big change. I also think it is good to get teh parents involved in their son's decision to join a fraternity. For us, that's something that we really look at when choosing rush chairs, how they are going to interact with parents, and it also is why we have our Parent's day rush event.

aephi alum 07-24-2003 01:30 PM

Wow. If my parents had had to sign my bid card, I would not be greek.

Betarulz! 08-14-2003 12:07 PM

Okay, here's some more news!

Tommorow(!!!!) we're having our pledge party. Basically a chance for all the guy who have signed, 22, to come and see everyone and meet the guys from the chapter who they haven't met yet. This is being held at a bar in Lincoln, and there will be food and sand volleyball. Major drinking celebration should continue late in to the night at another location. Saturday morning the house opens for the actives to move in, so the number of people in town tommorow should be high. I'm so ready to be heading back to Lincoln it's ridiculous.

We also have leads on 2 more rushees. One was offered a bid card yesterday after meeting with the rush chairs. He originally was going to another university to be on their debate team, but once he found out all the work he would have to do decided to stay in Nebraska. He made this decision last week apparently. He is a legacy which doesn't seem to mean a whole lot for us this summer since we're 0 for 3 with legacies. But hopefully we can make an impression and his dad will help, and maybe we'll be able to sign one more guy.

The other rushee I haven't heard anythign about except that he decided very late to go through rush.

Betarulz! 08-16-2003 01:48 PM

All rightie, it's great to be back in Lincoln for good!

Had a fantabulous time at our pledge event and met the other two rushees I mentioned earlier. The Debate team guy was awesome and I hope we get him. I was less impressed by the other kid, but I think we've got a decent chance to get him as well.

I also heard rumors that there might be as many as 3 other potential signees in the next couple weeks. I don't assume that we'll get all of them, but if we did that could bring our total up to 27! I also heard that formal fall rush is now just being an extended period of summer rush, and that there will be no formal rush until second semester.

I'll keep updating this as new info comes.

Thanks for keeping us posted, Betarulz!
