the new american pie movie does something with fraternites. not a great movie but its not bad. i was entertained by it. greek life is a big portion of the movie but its stereotypical. but theres a midget fraternity in it. classy.

also in dead man on campus they filmed part of it at the DU house at pacific? i think

mlevy86 08-31-2007 01:58 AM

SnuKnight172 08-31-2007 05:06 PM

There were 2 sequals to Skulls I know one was mentioned earlier.

Going Greek was another movie.

Lords of Discipline is a movie all Sigma Nus should watch.

Just got a copy of LoD.

This movie surprised me. When it first came on, I thought it was going to be some bad classic movie that my parents would have watched, but then was surprised at how good it was. It was like Animal House with consequences.

SPOILER!!!!!

Is this the one where the one guy dies at the end?

Firehouse 09-01-2007 10:58 PM

I've always understood that the miovie was based on a real incident at the Kappa Sigma house at Southen Cal. Kappa Sig was a glamour chapter; Ricky Nelson was a member there. I think all the miscellaneous fraternity shots in the beginning were from houses at Southern Cal in the 1950s.
Maybe a Kappa Sigma on this board knows the story behind the story.

Yeah, but I thought most people on the board knew that already, lol. I won't give anything else away but it is a must see.

Why should all Sigma Nus watch LoD? One of our alumni was going on about how we need to make our candidates watch it at a meeting....

I heard it's similiar to the VMI rat lining or something....is that why?

this movie is called "The Initiation of Sarah." Hey, when you have Morgan Fairchild AND Morgan Brittany in the same flick, you know it's got to be high quality!! If you have the Plex channel, you can probably catch this one since they run it quite often.

They did a remake of it last year around Halloween for ABC Family or something like that. It is hysterical if you are a Greek, but yeah, it just adds to the negative perception of us from the outside and turns us into a joke once again.

Has there ever been a really accurate movie of Greek life?

Yes, 3 founders and one traitor. It's at a military school also. All of our candidate classes had to watch it.

Firehouse 09-06-2007 08:41 PM

I have seen two movies that give a very accurate depiction of Greek life, and I assume they've already been discussed at some point. I'm not sure anyone ever saw them...but they're very well done, funny and good:
Dead Man On Campus
Fraternity Vacation

DEVODUDE 09-07-2007 11:58 AM

FYI.....Alyssa Milano (Charmed/Who's the Boss) did a movie with Jonathan Silverman (Weendend at Bernie's) called "Little Sister" in 1992. In that same year she did another movie called "Confessions of a Sorority girl," with Jamie Lunar (Melrose Place). Has anyone ever seen or heard of these 2 movies?

Also, there came across an "80's" slasher movie called, "Hell Night" with Linda Blair and Vincent Van Pattern, which was about a fraternity/sorority initiation.

oh wow...was it based on us or something?! lol

Bump...I watched Revenge of the Nerds yesterday and today I'll be watching #2. It was really funny to see how AB dressed. The sorority pref gowns were baby blue with a big ole ruffle at the top.

wolffootball37 05-30-2008 01:56 AM

"Across the Universe" had one of their music numbers set in a fraternity house. "With a Little Help From My Friends"

I really don't understand some peoples fascination with demonic sororities.:rolleyes:

With the upcoming release of THE HOUSE BUNNY, I realized that the film borrows a lot from a 1970s movie-made-for-tv called CALL HER MOM.

Connie Stevens played this out of work barmaid to gets a job as a house mother at worst fraternity on campus. The administration, led by Van Johnson, are both appalled and fascinated by her. She gives dating tips to the nerd, gets the stoner to take his studies seriously, etc.

Like I said, THE HOUSE BUNNY reminds me of CALL HER MOM

Thanks for the heads-up on "Fraternity Row". Still relevant today, and the part about the Budapest String Quartet still cracks me up no matter how many times I see it. Of course no radio station today would go anywhere near a prank like that. Definitely a good one.

Also, "Reason to Believe" is out on DVD. Goes pretty deep into a fraternity's internal affairs in terms of how they respond to a rape situation. Kim Walker from "Heathers" died a few years after being in this movie. But most people remember it for the scene with Holly Marie Combs from "Charmed". And that is all I'll say.

I watched "The Tall Lie" once and don't ever want to see it again. I mean, for Christ's sake, why did it have to be a puppy? Of course it could have just been a mind-f*ck since it all happens off screen. It's only really interesting because Russell Johnson from Gilligan's Island is in it as the evil hazing guy.

Oh, and, I will personally defend "The Initiation of Sara". I mean, Shelley Winters as a satanic house mother, plus Morgan Fairchild as the alpha bitch... that's just brilliant.

I think you want the other "Greek Chat" forum...

Seriously, as a depiction of fraternal bonding, that movie was just OK. As much as I love my bros from my undergrad years, there is not a single one of them who I would care to die for, or with. We wrap a mythology around the intense male bonding that occurs in war, but the truth is that it's a grim and nasty business, and those who have experienced it don't want to talk about it, not because of some oath of secrecy, but just because there is really no frame of reference to describe the experience.

"Band of Brothers" and "Generation Kill" both do a much better job of depicting male camaraderie. I'm still trying to figure out "Generation Kill" because it has so many layers to it. You think it's just a straight military movie, but there's a lot going on under the surface about how male relationships work, how they change under pressure, how true leaders emerge in spite of the chain of command. Good stuff.
