Phi Kappa Sigma suspended at Penn State for at least four years

PKT4LIFE 11-02-2023 12:42 AM

Speaking of Penn State:

Per a National IG post on 10/12/23, Alpha Sigma Alpha re-installed their Gamma Eta chapter at Penn State University. 38 women were initiated (head count).

Quick update on Alpha Delta Pi at Southern Methodist University:

They will be forming a charter class in the spring. More information via SMU Panhellenic.

I just came back from our Founders Day lunch. The President of our Gamma Phi Beta chapter at SDSU shared that the chapter picked up some 160 new members at fall recruitment and that total is over 300. (Don't quote me, I didn't quite catch the exact numbers.)

She added that, due to the huge new member class sizes, Panhellenic is currently looking to add either Chi Omega or Tri Delta or both.

Eight NPC chapters seems too few for this campus with those types of numbers. Chi Omega was there until 1995 but it seems that this would be first time that a Tri Delta chapter was on campus. UC San Diego would be the closest university that has both chapters.

Stony Brook University(NY) is open for NIC expansion. From the wording on the website, they may be open for expansion in all groups (NPHC, MGLO, NPC, NIC), but it was not quite clear. I do know that they are open for NIC.

Cookiez17 11-06-2023 03:38 PM

I'm excited to see how Stony Brook unfolds. There are only 4 IFC chapters and 3 NPC sororities (with Theta Phi Alpha being on suspension.) The sororities have totals around 90, and the new member totals for the chapters were in the 20's, so a new sorority would be good.

As for SDSU, it would be interesting if they decide to do a stacked expansion rather than just adding an extra chapter. I can't wait to see who presents!

LaneSig 11-15-2023 12:53 PM

Alpha Kappa Alpha has established the first sorority at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Alpha Sigma Omega Latina Sorority has established a new chapter at Marquette University(WI).

Lehigh University(PA) has invited Pi Lambda Phi to re-establish in Spring '24 and Pi Kappa Phi to establish in Spring '26.

Iota_JWH 11-15-2023 06:54 PM

I believe the University of South Carolina - Columbia has or will soon vote on opening for NPC expansion. Not too surprising, as quota was 143 this past fall. I understand there is an on-going issue about their Greek Village needing to be expanded, so currently there are 2 NPC groups w/o a house.

Pinkmagnolia921 11-15-2023 07:31 PM

I don't know how AGD and Pi Phi will manage without housing. Rumor has it that AZD may also be losing their house sometime soon. I don't know how they can add more groups if there's no housing for them.

Sigma Sigma Sigma will be returning to Costal Carolina University in Fall 2024!

Per WVUfraternities IG post (West Virginia). During Fall 2023, Phi Kappa Tau colonized with 47 pledges and Delta Sigma Phi colonized with 21 pledges.

Also per this post: Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) is returning to campus Spring 2024 and Beta Theta Pi is returning to campus Fall 2024

PKT4LIFE 11-16-2023 09:59 PM

Per our news article "Phi Kappa Tau Flourishes-A Remarkable Growth Update", we will be returning to St Louis University (Epsilon Upsilon) and will re-activate at Arizona (Epsilon Tau) during Spring 2024.

NOTE: Our Arizona chapter never closed (charter pulled), it went non-active for a year.

Why would they lose their house? They have plenty of members to fill it.

Because they are renting their house and their lease is up in 2025. No guarantee that it will be renewed.

When I saw this post I thought to myself didn’t Alpha Delta Pi just colonize there recently and sure enough, it was in 2009. Not very recent but still not an old chapter.

LaneSig 12-03-2023 06:26 PM

Sigma Chi rechartered the chapter at Eastern Illinois University this past weekend. Congratulations to all new members!

But, IFC numbers are usually (usually) lower than NPC; so, there really isn't a correlation between the decrease in groups for IFC and an addition for NPC. Plus, there are still four existing IFC orgs at Kenyon.

Kenyon no longer allows local groups to form; so, if 60% of the pnms dropped out or did not get a bid and are still interested in being in Greek Life, this is their only option.

60% drop rate! And considering it's a campus with under 2k students on it.

I hope my sorority does well and helps to give PNMs more options.

What in the world?! If they have a 60% drop rate, the solution to their problems isn't to add a new sorority.

Cookiez17 12-06-2023 06:28 PM

I only saw this in a local system with one NPC chapter where typical NPC rules didn't apply (RFM, quota, etc.) The sororities could decide their pledge class numbers and many people were cut from recruitment before bid day, even if they had gone to a specific chapter for pref.

They probably want to join nationals, not locals, and there is only national sorority on campus. It also sounds like the locals want to stay that way.

That's a great point and probably the most likely scenario. It's the way they reported it that sounds odd to me. The article, and/or the student life director to whom the information was attributed, conveniently ignores explaining why the students want a new chapter.

Pi Kappa Alpha has received a one year suspension from the University of Arkansas. If all sanctions are followed, the chapter can renew operations in December, 2024.
