Yeahy! http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies...ile_lachuh.gif

She was my star student in high school! But she was a star long before she was in my class..

Here it is, 6 p.m....and I'm wishing I had given Curly my phone number so I could find out...!!!!

Aaaaauuuugggghhhh!!!

Anyway, this "Norman Field" scene is different from how it was done back in my days (1985). I seem to recall we were given the bids as we were seated in the classrooms in Norman Hall...I don't think there was an outdoor mob scene back then.

Oh, the DRAMA!!!

FYI, for those of you who aren't familiar w/ UF's sorority row...it just so happens that 2 of Curlygirly's pref houses are NOT on the row! Pi Beta Phi is located on the other side of campus, actually on fraternity row (!!) and Kappa Kappa Gamma is located across from the main buildings on campus, on one of the main roads of Gainesville. Phi Mu is located on Sorority Row, specifically, on East Panhellenic Drive.

So, there's a 2/3 chance that our Miami girl will not be running across Norman Field with all the other pledges. I suppose PiPhi has a bus to take them and Kappa is in the other direction. http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies...geno/reden.gif

Curlygirly,

We are all dying to hear where you ended up. I hope it was where you wanted.

As for the cry and run part, I understand your pain. While I am a crier, I am definately not a runner. I said all through rush that I would just walk across campus to my new home. HOWEVER, as soon as I got my bid card, hugged my rommie and rho Chi, I flew down the stairs and ran to the KD house. I didn't even know what hit me.

I hope you have a fabulous time.

KDHoney 08-25-2002 09:03 PM

Hey Curlygirly...just got back in town and had about 3 pages of posts to catch up on. I'm very glad to see that you're keeping an open mind. I hope everything went well for you and I can't wait to hear the end result (I'm sorry it won't be KD, but I know that you'll find a great home in any of the groups you mentioned)!

pinkyphimu 08-25-2002 09:38 PM

i can't wait to hear how your rush story ends! i hope your day was filled with happiness!

shadokat 08-25-2002 09:55 PM

Curly!! Where are you girl :) I hope all went well on pref night. I'm sorry you didn't get invited back to D Phi E, but you have 3 fantastic organizations to choose from, and I hope you end up where you really want to be. Come tell us all your run and cry story dammit!! :) Just b/c you're not a runner and a crier, I think I'd do both after this week, just because it was finally over!!

Good luck!!
Heather

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

imsohappythatiama 08-26-2002 12:06 PM

WELCOME, SISTER

Oh, how I love a happy ending...and how I love a happy KKG ending even more!

Curlygirl, you are at the start of an amazing, beautiful journey that you will never forget, and to which you will always be tied through the bonds of friendship, truth, and love.

Though you and I have never met, I believe there is a destiny that makes us sisters. As you begin your sisterhood in Kappa Kappa Gamma, always remember that "none of us goes her way alone; all that we send into the lives of others, comes back into our own."

And now I'll add my own serenade to KappaStarGirl's lovely voice:

You'll find as a Kappa,
You'll always recall
The laughter, the friendship,
the memories and all.
The blues that we cherish,
The owl so wise,
These are the symbols
that we will hold dear
All our lives.

I'll be your true friend
and I'll be your comrade
You'll know who I am
by the key that I wear.
I'll strive to be loyal,
I'll strive to be worthy
of all that we honor and share.

High on a hill
Where the fleur de lis grow
There is a golden key
on a house I love so!
How we ran, and we sang,
and we laughed on that hill!
And the memory of the the golden key
follows me still.
And the friendship of Kappa
wil live through the years,
through the sun of a young girl's smile
and the rain....of an old woman's tears.

I still see the pictures
that hung on the walls.
I still hear the echoes
of laughter in the halls.
My hair has grown grey,
and my eyes dimly see;
But the memory of the golden key
remains with me.
And the friendship of Kappa
wil live through the years,
through the sun of a young girl's smile
and the rain....of an old woman's tears.

WE WELCOME YOU, SISTER!!!!

Loyally,

imsohappythatiama

I just had a feeling...

Dear CurlyGirly,

I went to Chicago to visit my Big Key Sister this weekend. I miss her so much now that she's out of school. We were eating chocolate chip cookies yesterday at the Watertower Mall and I'd drifted off into my thoughts, when she asked me what I was thinking about. I said, "I was just wondering how CurlyGirly's doing at UF and whether she preffed Kappa." She told me that I'm a dork (which I already knew) but that she wanted to know how it turned out. I'm very excited to email her and let her know that you are now our Sister!

Fill us in! I want to hear all about Pref and Bid Day! What was the ceremony? What did they wear? What did you eat? Tell us about the girl who preffed you. What sold you? How about Bid Day? How was the Norman Field experience? We have nothing like that at my school and I understand it can be intense. What activities did you do for Bid Day? How's your Key Sis and your Kore? What are they like? We want DETAILS! (Sorry, I'm addicted.)

Let me add my CONGRATULATIONS to those of everyone else. I almost started crying here at work when I first read your thread. Welcome to our beautiful sisterhood within the Kappa Garden. Kappa has been so wonderful to me through my past two years as an active, and I'm sure that she will continue to provide for me for the rest of my life. Like you, I was hesitant about joining a sorority, but I'm now convinced that it's the best decision I've ever made.

Like KappaStarGirl, I'm a musician, so allow me to continue the serenade. This is a song we sing to our New Members when they pledge.

Lovely Girl, she wears the Sky and Sea,
Treasured symbol of Fraternity.
O'er the door, the Fleur-de-lis,
Haunting strains of KKG
We'll sing to you our song of
Blue & Blue;
Our hearts are yours in everything we do.
Come and we will show the world
Our Lovely Kappa Girl.

I love that one. When my sisters sang it to me at my pledging, I almost started crying. I thought, "Oh, they think I'm lovely! That's so sweet!" (In case you couldn't already tell, I'm a sucker for our songs and ritual. I think it's all so beautiful. I cry a lot.)

And here is a song that one of my chapter's charter members wrote for us when we were installed in 1981. It's called The Spirit of KKG, and it was offically adopted into the Fraternity Songbook at Convention in 1982. We affectionately call it Tirzah's Song for its composer, Tirzah Strom Peterson. It's come to mean a lot to me, and I'm sure it will mean a lot to you as you discover its deeper and deeper layers of significance as you grow within Kappa.

Kappa Kappa Gamma is not only a word to me,
Or just the
Golden Key,
Or the
Fleur-de-lis,
Or the
Blue & Blue,
Or the
Wise Old Owl.
It's the bondage of
Sisterhood within Loyalty;
It's the
Womanhood in Sincerity;
But mainly it's the
Spirit of KKG.

I'm thrilled to have another Kappa woman in the GC community. You've made a wonderful choice, and we're very lucky to count you among our Kappa sisters. We'd love to see you 'round the Kappa forum, too. Keep us all posted about how life is. We're here for you.

Loyally Delsigmata,
Andrea

what you've all been waiting for....

Hello everyone...
I am so sorry that it has taken me so long to post. I know that you have all been *anxiously* awaiting my story! hehe....

Classes started Monday, and I've been busy shelling out my life savings for books that they'll buy back at the end of the semester for $2!

Bid Day was great. All the girls and Pi Chis met in University Auditorium for a ceremony. We were all inducted in Panhellenic as a whole...and the best part was when we learned what sororities our Pi Chis were in. My Pi Chis were from: KD, Theta, ADPi, AEPhi, and AOPi. The night before we had all tried to guess what chapters they belonged to...and we only guessed one. (although she wouldn't admit it)

Afterwards all the girls walked from University to Norman Field. This was quite a sight to see! We all walked in our groups with our Pi Chi....crossing streets and blocking traffic. Everywhere we went, we got looks....it was pretty funny!

Norman Field was amazing! There is a parking garage right next to the field...and it was lined with boys from all over! There were people sitting in lawn chairs, videotaping the whole thing. The guys were there to watch the girls cry and run (and hopefully trip while they're at it). They were not there to share in our joy! lol...

We stood in circles with our groups. We had to wait until the Bid Cards arrived, so while we waited we sang songs and did Gator cheers. Then you heard a cheer...and all the computer Pi Chis (the ones in charge of everything related to computers...like the ranking, etc) were running to their groups. When our Pi Chi arrived (Amber--a KD), they split the cards between all our 5 Pi Chis, and started distributing them. Everyone was super nervous...and the Pi Chis kept shouting at us to keep our cards over our heads so that we couldn't peek. We then had to wait for all the groups to finish, even after our group was done...before opening the cards. Girls took pictures of their friends with their cards on their heads. And of course, as luck would have it....my camera broke right AFTER I took a group pic of my Pi Chis. When I tried to take a pic with the bid card....it started making funky noises. (but that's a whole other story!)

Everyone started yelling at us to rip open our cards....I opened mine, saw the K...and walked to my group. The Kappa girls aren't on sorority row, so they brought signs and waited for us on the field. Of course, I'm not a crier nor a runner....so I didn't participate in all the drama. But there were girls running, hugging their friends, and crying! While this was going on...the spectators had their cameras rolling! lol

We walked to the Kappa house...and met our 'Bid Day Buddies.' We got a name tag, bag with letters, tshirt, cup, pen, and flower. We took a pledge class photo...and a house photo. We ate dinner, met a bunch of girls, learned a bit more about the chapter...and then just hung out.

This entire week I've been having lunch and dinner at the house. I attended my first 'informal' chapter meeting on Monday. When the sisters do their ritual things, we go in the other room and get new member training.

Last night was our formal pledge ceremony. New Members wore white, and the sisters wore black. We also received our pledge pins and big sisters! My big sister is my bid day buddy--Kitty! :)

After the ceremony there was a candle lighting ceremony for one of the older sisters. She got engaged! I don't even know her, but I was sooo excited. By the time the candle got around the 3rd time...everyone was oohing and aahing...it was really cute. She then told the story of how it happened! lol :)

I'm really excited about everything...our new member retreat is in mid-September...and each day I meet more girls. They're all wonderful!

Anyway....I just wanted to share this with everyone. I've felt guilty all week for not being able to post!

Hope you've enjoyed my story! :D

Oh, you TORTURED all of us all week long...http://216.40.241.68/contrib/paladin/jesse5.gif We were waiting patiently to hear all about it!!! Thanks for your note!

But now, I think you need to start a new thread: Curlygirly's New Member experience!!! Wahoo! http://216.40.241.68/otn/laughing/icon_smile_lachuh.gif

Thanks for sharing!!

P.S. You forgot to mention the "special delivery!" http://216.40.241.68/otn/wink/wink2.gif

curlygirly 08-30-2002 05:20 PM

SPECIAL DELIVERY

That's right!!!!!!!!!!

On my first day to lunch at the Kappa house, one of the sisters told me that I had a delivery for me in the TV room. I walked over there, thinking that there was some candy or a cute note from my Bid Day Buddy in my 'mailbox.'

My mailbox was empty...but on the table was a bouquet of flowers. I NEVER get flowers...so I almost walked away. Then one of the girls said "who sent them to you?"

I read the card, and it was from kdonline!!!! A bouquet of purple irises to congratulate me!!! She called the house and asked them what our flower is (being that she's a KD...she didn't know! hehe) Then called up a florist in Gainesville...and had them delivered to the house in my name!

Isn't that sweet?! As I was holding them after dinner (getting ready to walk out the door), EVERYONE asked me who they were from! They all thought it was soooooo sweet that my high school teacher (who they couldn't believe I still kept in touch with!) had gone through all the trouble to send me flowers. :D

The irises opened up the morning after, and they're not decorating my dorm room. I took a picture of them....so I will upload it later. :)

Silverblue 08-30-2002 05:25 PM

Kdonline, I think we can safely call you the Teacher of the Year! That was so sweet of you.

AOIIalum 08-30-2002 05:34 PM

Awww, that is one of the sweetest things I've *ever* heard. How lucky you are to have such a special teacher in your life to this day (and kdonline, you rock!) I can only hope each of my kids have a teacher-student relationship that wonderful and lasting during their school years.

Christin
