Well, the ladybug isn't Phi Mu's symbol, and I didn't know it was *ever* used with individual chapters until I logged on GC. My chapter doesn't use the ladybug AT ALL (possibly because we have ASA on campus, our biggest rival size-wise and quality-wise -- yay ASA -- and their symbol, at least here, is the ladybug.)

Anyway, I had a girl from the Phi Mu listserve I'm on e-mail me and sign it, "ladybug love"........ I was CLUELESS!

deltaphi94 04-20-2003 11:45 PM

lol... jacquelyn, i was told our LOCAL mascot was the ladybug ~ Sir Fidel was national. so, yeah, Sir Fidel is national, and GC taught me that we were not the only chapter fond of ladybugs. i think you're the only Phi Mu I've come across to say that ladybugs had not been used on your campus.

I had never heard of them before GC, and believe me, noone knows useless chapter facts like I do.

really???? even tho my chapter didn't use ladybugs, we knew that they were the "unofficial" mascot. some bigs gave their littles lady bug stuff and they showed up here and there around the house. lol, i think that we have hijacked this thread!

AOII*Azra-elle 04-21-2003 02:16 AM

When I went through rush, one of the first houses I went to was ASA and I got cut after that. I went in thinking my roommate was one of their ladies, and so naturally I asked if they knew her. I was informed, quite rudely, by one that they didn't know who she was. When I talked to my roommate later *we lived in the dorms, so I barely knew her* she told me what had happened and that yes, she had been an ASA. We were looking through her scrapbook and sure enough, the girl from earlier had been her big! I think that's why I got cut, but, I hang out with alot of them now and we get along great! :D But I still love where I am!

(it's just a little strange to me)

Well, it could be that the particular chapter in question had a special affinity for snakes as a local symbol. OR, it could be that the PNM with the snake phobia saw a pledge pin and the crest and over exaggerated a bit. After all, when someone has a phobia, things probably seem worse than they are. :)

AlphaGamDiva 04-22-2003 02:10 AM

we just have 7 sororities on my campus.....after going to all seven houses, you can go back to 5 for theme, and then 3 for pref. i only got cut from one group first night and i don't think, i know why...heeheehee. :)

i walked into this precious house on the 2nd night of getting to know you, talked to this really cool girl, had a lot to talk about, blah, blah, blah....ok, so rotation kicks in and here comes none other than this chick that did a pageant with my sister--and they did not get along. i knew she didn't know who i was, so i asked her if she was l'ville's jr miss the previous year, and she looked all surprised and excited answering, "well yes i was!"....so i told her that her roommate was my sister, and her face went from a flattered smile to a freaked out blank stare in 2.5 seconds followed by a disgusted "oh." it was hilarious. yeah....not asked back to that one. :p

s'all good, though....no place for me like AGD!!!!!!

Rio_Kohitsuji 04-23-2003 09:51 PM

Well, last year I rushed this sorority that I had some pretty good friends in so I thought, "Hey, if they are that cool, then the rest must be awesome". (stupid me) Well, me and a good bud was there rushing together when I told them that my best bud wasn't able to come do to work. They wanted her name and all, well, I gave them her name and all. All of a sudden some of them start bashing her quite rudely!! I'm like WTF??? So, since I was pissed I decided to have some fun. We were taking group pics of us and I started mocking one of the girls as a stereotypical cheerleader. Needless to say some didn't enjoy that. *grin* Odd thing, I was invited back.....but I dropped them pretty damn quick. *nods*

A Rho Chi took her to the bathroom, and she CLIMBED OUT OF A WINDOW AND RAN ACROSS OUR LAWN!! She told her PX later that she felt 'freaked out by our wallpaper'. Ohhhh kayyyyyy..........

I'm sorry, but I had to search to find this post as I think someone climbing out of a window to "escape" wallpaper has to be the funniest thing ever done in the name of rush! As this thread has gotten pretty long, I wanted the newbies to enjoy... :D

As most of you know I rushed as a senior/junior (sr credits, jr in year standing), so I have been on my campus for 2 years before rush. Well I think I didnt get asked back to Chi O on my campus because the girl I was talking to kept telling me I was in her rush group the year before when I had never even rushed. She kept going on and on how I was in it and Id tell her no I never rushed before but she wouldnt listen and started to get defensive about it, and I kept trying to tell her no youve probably just seen me on campus but she wouldnt let it go. She was like remember our Rho Chi's Suzie Q and Patty P or remember so and so in the rush group they are a Chi O too....I was like nooooooo. The funny thing is that her last name began with a C and mine with a P so even if we were to have ever rushed together we wouldnt have been in the same groups anyways. Very strange.....But in the same sense during round 3 at Tri Delt the conversation was not flowing very well (FYI- do not take this as me saying anything bad about them b/c I came really close to staying in rush and preffing there rather dropping out and pursuing DZ) and I think the only reason I got asked back because I had on a Lilly dress and blonde hair (basically what the chapter consists of) because the girl and I had no conversation what so ever....but I ended up where I am supposed be walking in the light of the flame!!! I LOVE DZ!!!

Betarulz! 04-29-2003 12:32 PM

While it's not getting "cut" I finally thought of a reason as to why I didn't get the best response from one house when I was rushing...

We were at a beach alongside some lake/river and we were playing wiffle ball. I was on second base, and one of their rush chairs was playing shortstop. Groundball to him and because there was a guy at first I was forced to run...wasn't really paying attention and I ended up totally leveling the rush chair b/c he was in the base path...The house is considered a dominant intramural house, but even that intensity or aloofness caused them to take a step back...

GMUBunny 04-29-2003 06:25 PM

This wasn't funny but it left me feeling like a complete idiot. This past fall was my first time going through formal rush, period. I pledged the previous spring. At preference, the one night we can say "hey we really like you" one of my sisters said "I think so-and-so is a girl I rushed the other night" so when the girl came in I said that the sister really enjoyed talking to her and she'd make a wonderful addition to ZTA. Turns out it was the wrong girl and she looked at me like I was crazy. I felt so stupid. Another girl struck me dumb when she said "I would come back tomorrow night but there's just one problem, you don't have real greek letters." I had some choice words for her but instead I just smiled and tried to rush her to the best of my ability. To this day I haven't seen her in anyone else's letters.

FuzzieAlum 04-29-2003 06:29 PM

LOL, if anyone is joining just for pretty Greek letters, it'd be cheaper just to go print up their own t-shirt!

Don't feel bad about the other girl ... most rushees have the sense to realize that with the number of rushees we meet, there are bound to be some mix-ups. Apologize, move on, and if she's that touchy, it's her problem!

GMUBunny 04-29-2003 07:12 PM

Thanks Fuzzie. I don't care what my letters look like. It's what they mean that counts. I'll always be a ZTA, curly-q letters or not!!!

Optimist Prime 04-29-2003 07:20 PM

I have pretty letters.

XOMichelle 04-29-2003 07:46 PM

Grrr.. I HATE it when the girls are mean during rush
I had a girl I was preffing roll her eyes during the ceremony.. and I was singing!!!!!!! I was shocked. Fortuantely, she went somewhere else!

KDShan 04-29-2003 09:30 PM

I didn't go through formal rush, I was a COB. My RA (a KD) invited me to a COB event at the house. I went, thinking I would just check it out and probably not like it. Well I had a blast. We ate pizza, eatched freinds and just hung out. It also happened to be big sis week for the pledges. They received gifts and clues everyday and some were given items they had to wear all week (this was before it was considered hazing). Everyone was joking with them, trying to confuse them about who their big was. Well, I was talking to Sara and I asked her why Erinn was wearing mardi gras beads in November? And she said "Oh, I gave them to her for Big Sis week" and I said (loudly) "So you're Erinn's big sister?" I thought for sure they wouldn't like me after that. Later that night I got a phone call offering me a bid! Oh, and I didn't blow it-Kathy was Erinn's Big! Sara ended up being my great grand big though!

33girl 04-29-2003 09:31 PM

you know, in an odd way the girls who were outright rude eye-rollers and such were refreshing. we knew they weren't interested, so we didn't have to waste time debating on them. as opposed to the rushees who made us think they wanted us badly and then turned on a dime. grrrrr.

That's true...plus, eye-rollers are good for gossip. :p

MTSUGURL 04-30-2003 12:53 AM

As I said before, when I went in as a freshman, I knew NOTHING. After we got the Orientation books, before school even started, I liked Zeta because their letters were recognizable. Greek letters confused me. I almost asked someone where the "e" in ZTA was.... Thank God I kept my mouth shut and saved myself that humiliation... I thought Chi Omega was pronouced "CHEE Omega." I was the first person in my family to go to college, so I never heard abou Greek life. My mom had never said a word about sororities until the day I moved on campus. Now she wants me to rush so badly she's offered to buy the new clothes I'll need for rush. (But Mom, I do need 6 pairs of jeans, a bunch of dresses, all these shirts, and at least 5 pairs of shoes!) ;)

Yeah, but the worst is when they come back again the following year!

MoxieGrrl 04-30-2003 08:14 AM

We had a girl come through formal who didn't seem all that interested in our sorority. I didn't think that it was us necessarily, but everytime she came through our house, she did something crazy to get the entire party's attention focused on her. We thought, "Ok...obviously, this girl doesn't want us because she is acting like such a fool." I mean, our rush is pretty relaxed, but this was ridiculous! We cut her, then she cried because we didn't invite her back. Umm...not inviting someone back who was more interested in dancing on your food table than talking to sisters didn't seem all that strange at the time.

FuzzieAlum 04-30-2003 11:32 AM

There are some people who just aren't meant to be Greek. There was this girl on my campus who was, um, weird. (Like she would have group fondling orgies in the lobby of my dorm. Really.) Supposedly she went through rush the year before me - and brought her twin sister, who didn't even go to a school near us.

I suppose she rushed because her boyfriend was Greek, and she was their sweetheart - at least until they banned her from the house, along with her boyfriend's best friend/fraternity brother, because, yes, she was cheating with him. She was one in a string of sweethearts they regretted later.

I'm getting off topic, but this girl ... anyway, I don't mind the random psychos coming through. It makes that decision of who to cut that much easier!

Last year, I saw a girl come through rush who had pledged us the previous year but dropped soon after Bid Day because she wasn't satisfied with our sorority--she had her heart set on one of the biggest houses on campus. Well, I noticed her on Open House day...but my jaw about hit the floor when I saw her back the next day! Evidently she slipped through the cracks and we didn't realize who she was or she would've been cut, but I couldn't believe she had the nerve to come back. Why? If I were her, I would've begged off sick or something, just so I wouldn't have to go back in the house I had dropped...especially if they knew the reason why. She did get cut after that round, though, I think, and I don't think she ever pledged anywhere.

AlphaGamDiva 04-30-2003 05:28 PM

why anyone would not want to be a DZ at UK is beyond me....you guys are super fun! :) ;) :D what a silly, silly girl she must be....

I didn't get cut when I rushed, but during formal recruitment the semester before, I was out driving around with my friends one night and I got a call from this sorority in campus asking me if I wanted to go to a COB with them. The sorority that called wasnt exactly what I was looking for in a sisterhood (they have 15 girls and only pledge maybe 3 and initiate at most 1 or 2 a sem, while most of the other chapters have 60-80 and pledge classes of 20+), but what freaked me out more than anything was how they got my number... not my dorm number... not my house number... by my CELL PHONE NUMBER... being a first sem frosh, its not like I knew anyone in the house and none of my friends knew any of them... From that day on I just avoided all those girls and then signed up for informal recruitment in the spring cuz I wanted to pledge, but they really scared me... I know that sounds really snotty, but I was really freaked out... :(

I don't blame you for being freaked out. If a whole bunch of people I didn't know got ahold of my cell number, I'd be pretty freaked too. I'd be wondering what sort of bizarre things they had to do to find it!

USChica06 05-03-2003 05:20 AM

I'm in NROTC at my college and our Orientation week was the week before rush week. We were told by the Navy to bring specific items. I had so much stuff to bring for the Navy that I didn't have room for much else. That meant that clothes other than uniforms would be sent later.

There were three packages my mother sent me at school:
Some clothes and bare necessities.
Bed Sheets.
Other clothes.

Well, the "other clothes" box had my nice clothes, shoes, hair dryer, and make-up in it. And it arrived my 3rd day of rush.

However, it I had already been cut by 7 out of the 9.

I think I was cut based on looks, but then again, I probably would have cut me too. The nicest thing I had was khakis. I had a t-shirt on, and sandals that were coming apart. My hair was tied back and I looked like a mess.

The other two cut me after the 4th day, right before Preference.

But, it turned out to be a really bad time to rush for me personally. So, it's best that happened. Hopefully, the second time is a charm!!!!!!! :D

honeychile 05-03-2003 11:37 AM

Just tell me that you didn't crawl out of the bathroom window to escape the wallpaper, and I'll be happy!

Why does that one story just really make me laugh so hard!!!

MTSUGURL 05-03-2003 12:57 PM

Before I left the service sorority, I went to rush and ended up being the one to call back one of the girls to tell her we decided not to extend her a bid. One of the sisters, trying to be funny, listed as her 2 interview questions: Have you done anything illegal, and would you do it again? She told us that she had stolen a bunch of stuff from her work when they closed because they weren't going to do inventory, that she didn't feel bad about it, and that she didn't know if she would do it again. This had just been a few months before. We were very small, and had most of the events in our houses, so besides the integrity issue, we were worried about if she would take our stuff or not. We cut her, and I just found out that one of the NPC groups picked her up during COB. Not really looking forward to seeing her during rush this fall...

WhiteDaisy128 07-07-2003 01:07 AM

Well this isn't about being cut during recruitment, but I think it's why I didn't get picked as a Rho Chi for next semester. I went to the interview and it was going GREAT! I mean, they (Panhellenic Pres, VP: Membership, and Rho Chi Educator) asked all the right questions and I had all the right answers! We got along great, they were easy to talk to and everything...THEN the last question they asked me (and this was more in just casual conversation than in interview style), "Why didn't you RUSH as a freshman?" I jumped right in with the honest answer, which was that my freshman year roommate was rushing and was totally psycho!! It gave me the impression that sorority girls were going to be similar to her. I told them that apparently the sororities saw how psycho she was because she didn't get a bid anywhere...well then, they laughed (relating to bad roommate experiences) and asked who it was...I told them the girls name and then the Pres and Rho Chi educator looked at each other and suddenly stopped laughing...apparently, my freshman year terrible roomie rushed her sophomore year and was picked up by their sorority!!! Talk about foot in mouth disease!!!

Edited to add that after her sophomore year, the same girl transfered to another school and was denyed affiliation with the chapter at the transfer school.

OHMYGAWD!!! Did you just die on the spot? Did they tell you your psycho roomie was in their house right then and there or what? Ack! That has got to be one of the most embarassing stories I have ever heard!!

WhiteDaisy128 07-07-2003 02:07 PM

Yeah, they told me right on the spot that she had ended up joining their GLO. I tried to play it off cool and say that people change alot between their freshman and sophomore year, but it was so awkward. I'm positive that it's the reason I wasn't picked as a Rho Chi...and I REALLY wanted it!!! I was so mad at myself.

Wine&SilverBlue 01-30-2004 06:59 PM

Hmmm... embarrassing rush story?:

Rushing as a soph (esp at a school that only has formal rush, and only during spring semester), I knew a lot about all of the sororities but tried to keep at least somewhat of an open mind, since we had to go to all 6 the first 2 days. The first day I was surprised that I really liked some of the sororities I didn't think i would, but then I went to XYZ who I had anticipated not liking, and it was so much worse than I expected. Maybe its because I was their last party of the day, but the girl I spoke to didn't start conversation AT ALL... we just kinda stared at eachother for about 30 seconds (which seemed like hours) and finally I was like, "sooooo... I'm a soph," to break the ice. It was painful. The second day (we still had to go to all 6) wasn't any better. I told my rho chi that if I had to go to one more XYZ event I would shoot myself. (OOPS!!! It turned out one of my rho chi's was an XYZ... everyone was so sure she was an ABC so I never even considered she was in that other sorority)

AOTTAdvisor 02-02-2004 03:11 PM

GREAT thread idea!
This is something I never knew till AFTER I had graduated...
When I went through recruitment, I had my heart set on an organization, so when I got asked back to them for third round(right before pref) and because I thought I had really connected with some of the girls, I felt so good. When I got to their philanthropy round, the girl that picked me up(we will call her RUSHER) said she was also from FL and and I that she had gone to my high school for her freshman year but had moved after that(and since she was a senior when I was rushing, she was long gone by the time I got to high school) She asked me if when I was at that school, had I known "Jane Doe", and me, being all excited about ANOTHER connection was like " oh yes, she is sooooo sweet--I knew her pretty well--we were in musicals together, blah, blah, blah"
The truth was, I did know the girl and we had been in musicals together , but I would not have considered her a good friend or anything.
Afterward, the girl rushing me was fine and we talked some more and I left thinking "I am soooo in at XYZ--I knew JANE DOE!!"
When I got my invites back the next day, I had been cut. I was DEVASTATED but I dealt with it okay and ended up LOVING AOTT and being a proud sister. I never really talked to anyone about being cut because it did really hurt.
Fast forward to my first year out of college and we are all at my BF from HS friend Sarah's house, talking about high school and random gossip and this girl who talked to me at that parties name comes up and I was like "wow, I never told you all this but she rushed me at XYZ and she seemed really sweet and asked me if I knew Jane Doe and I said I knew her but then XYZ dropped me--it was such a bad time"
They all look at me funny and are like "Les, the reason RUSHER transferred was she broke up Jane Doe and her boyfriend and Jane Doe made her life a LIVING HELL for a whole year". I had not known this but I guess everyone of my friends who had older brothers and sisters had heard the stories of how awful this girl was to her.
Moral of the story---just because you think you feel this connection, doesn't mean its for the right reason!!
I actually live in fear at times that maybe that RUSHER would have taken me and then made my life a living hell for being friends with Jane Doe!!

ADPiAkron 02-02-2004 03:27 PM

I was cut from one house because of their high grade point average requirement. We had 6 sororities at the time and I was invited back to 5 for preference round and we could choose 2. My embarassing story did not cause me to get cut, but it made me look stupid. It was the first party of my two preference parties. At the end I walked out the door and sat down on the front porch and started crying uncontrollably. Still to this day I think it was because I felt bad because I was not going there. But whatever it was, some Rho Gam's came flying out the doors to make sure I was ok because it was such a scene. haha OOPS! I ended up joining the other sorority and would not change it for the world!

Other sorority=ADPi of course!!

Adelphean1851 02-29-2004 05:39 AM

I know this thread is a little old but i'll post my story anyway. At UNLV, at least when I went through rush there were 5 Orgs., AGD and DZ were the top houses on campus, they also had a reputation for cutting hevily. This was circa 1999 when those little hair scarfs and bandanas were in style and I am a very low hair maintence kind of girl so since my hair was longish at the time I loved them, and wore them alot. In fact I wore a diffrent one on every day of rush except pref I think. So during rush I kind of got the nickname "bandanna girl". Thinking back on my rush room expirences that is the only reason I can think of that those groups cut me I mean I diddn't say any thing really stupid or anything. Oh well I knew ADPi was where I belonged from day one anyway. my sisters loved me bandannas and all.

Another really funny story that kind of relates is when I went to Alpha ceremony. We had been told to dress up, now, they diddn't exactly specify what kind of dressed up, I guess they assumed we knew sunday best was what they wanted. So me and my dumb a** gets all decked out for the club (I don't know what i was thinking) in a rather provactive red dress and, believe it or not a feather boa. I just know my sisters were shaking their heads in disbelief. I'm suprised they diddn't make me change (they did make me leave the feathers behind though) To this day i'm still embarassed about that.
