33girl, I know exactly what your talking about. I saw that movie in my English class when I was a Sophomore in High School (sometime during the 1988-89 academic year). It gave me nightmares and sleepless nights for many months. The irony was that I was with my class and teacher and it was partially dark (still some light from the outside). It still messed with my head!

I've never thought of the Virgin Suicides as "disturbing," maybe because I've seen a lot of stuff like that growing up, but seriously, read the book! The book, as always, is so much more complete in the storytelling and movies always leave out the interesting facts. Again, I'll reiterate- READ THE BOOK!

Although the storyline was stupid and pointless, 28 Days Later disturbed the hell out of me. I can't even watch the commercials for it now.

Seven freaked me out when I first saw it as a high school sophomore, but now it's not that bad, just gross.

An old close friend's mom made us watch Kids when it came out, just to scare us about sex (her more than me), but it didn't disturb me, per se, just made me realize you can't be stupid and you can't be too careful. So I guess her methodology worked in a way, at least for me. I can't vouch for that friend... maybe she should see the movie again...

Poltergeist disturbs me to this day, maybe because of my name association with the little girl and because it freaked me out as a kid...

I can't remember the name of the movie, but it starred Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino and had something to do with the devil... I was so freaked out by that movie even though Keanu's a horrible actor... ugh. Still scary...

absolutuscchick 08-21-2003 03:58 AM

The Virgin Suicides I thought was really disturbing....I really liked it though, and then as for SCARY...the ring....I saw it like two weeks ago and I'm still scared from it.....

I really liked the Virgin Suicides, maybe cuz I really like Kirsten Dunst.

As for The Ring... try watching that at a friend's house, who lives on a nearby island (Grosse Ile for Michigan people) that is pitch black at nite? Or I should add that one of my sisters' name is Samira... she's tall, skinny, with loooong straight dark brown hair.

Yes she resembles Samara VERY MUCH! We even made her pretend to climb out of the TV and it was like watching the movie. Definately creepy.

My parents weren't home when I got home so I drove around from 1am-4am waiting for them and still they hadn't gotten home. I fell asleep wtih my TV on and the volume up. I was so freaked out.

After reading the disturbing books thread, I had to come here and put my two cents in. While lately I have been sticking to happy fluffy movies (The Lizzy McGuire Movie, anyone?....I'm such a loser :) ) but a few come to mind:

Pet Cemetery: I always loved these movies, maybe because they were the first "horror" movies I ever saw, but one time when my brother was younger he came down and watched it with us, and I found him later curled up on his bed and shaking :( - needless to say, I was a little more careful when he was around.

By the way, when doing a google search on how to spell it - I am that bad, how did I ever make it to University? - I found this site, which for whatever reason, I found a bit disturbing in more of a weird way

http://www.mycemetery.com/pet/

And I get to post a new one! Yeah, I feel so special!

Titus (1999), based on Shakespeare's earliest play, "Titus Andronicus", and starring Anthony Hopkins, was seriously messed. Really disturbing, I found it hard to finish, but it had amazing cinematography. If you can stomach it, check it out just to say you did.

Warning: really disturbing rape scene, if you don't see the actual act, the before and after is more than enough.

I agree, Titus (both the play and the movie) was waaay disturbing. The movie was quite an interesting interpretation of the play, though-especially the mix of modern and ancient Roman times.

hootchpdt 08-26-2003 03:08 PM

i see a lot of repeat votes for some movies as "most disturbing" i am sitting here laughing my ass off because i work at a video store and most of those are some of my FAVORITE movies and watch every chance i get.

CLOCKWORK ORANGE>>if you think the movie is a mind f***, read the book. the english version, not the american version. stanley kubrik (the movie's director) based the movie on the american version, which has the last chapter of the true version left out.

VANILLA SKY>>another great mind f***, but watch the original. oh, you didnt know it was a remake???? watch ABRA TUS OJOS (OPEN YOUR EYES)

nobody voted for I SHOT ANDY WARHOL. documentary style film on the women who claims to have shot andy warhol

8mm is freaky, i will give you that

MEMENTO is awesome, thats it

same with REQUIM FOR A DREAM.

and for those of you who said EVENT HORIZON>>FANTASTIC MOVIE. when kids come in asking for a movie for their film fest that will scare the shit outta people, thats the one i reccommend.

CANDYMAN is kinda disturbing but overall fantastic

THE DOORS, if you dont know anything about the doors, it will freak you out. if you do, you will expect most of it.

FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM. both transferred from books that hunter s. thompson wrote on his life. they are true stories.

THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES>>not too bad, until you get to the end and it says "Based on the true accounts...."

Disturbing?

The play is fairly mundane for modern audiences, and the movie adaption is just poorly done, in my opinion. The last scene especially, with the pies? It was so close to salvaging the whole movie (with the euthanasia take), but the rest just comes off as hokey compared to the theatrical productions.

However, if you were expecting Romeo and Juliet, then it probably came across as quite weird - now, the re-do of the Tempest, that was frigging bizarrely done.

i can't believe no one has mentioned the 'faces of death' series..

i saw the first one when i was 13...sat through the beating of the monkey and the eating of its brains that followed....but i had to leave the room when they started clubbing the baby seals

hootchpdt 09-03-2003 05:54 PM

if i was ever a military interrogator trying to get some info out of al qaeda members, i would make them watch

ANYTHING WITH KIRSTEN DUNST (she can't act, isn't pretty, completelty overrated. she ruined the part of Mary Jane Watson. Sam Raimi should have gotten Denise Richards to do it)

Wild Things. Nobody wants to see Kevin Bacon's bacon

Manhunter. The first movie based on Hannibal Lector. oohhh....another remake. you probably know it as RED DRAGON.

Rocky Horror Picture Show. 'nough said

Murder By Numbers. Can't stand Sandra Bullock

and the worst movie ever made occording to many lists..........BATMAN AND ROBIN. Complete CRAP!

worst movie ever made on my list....THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE. i revoked my girlfriend's movie picking privelages for making me sit through that. hey baby, i still love you though!

DWAlphaGam 03-19-2004 11:51 AM

*bump*

I have another one-- "Heavenly Creatures" with Kate Winslet. It was on Bravo last weekend, and I forgot how f'ed up it is.

Lady Pi Phi 03-19-2004 12:37 PM

MONSTER was pretty disturbing, especially the rape scene.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned KIDS, but that is one messed up movie.

Co-sign on THE RING and THE VIRGIN SUICIDES.

cutiepatootie 03-19-2004 02:00 PM

The most disturbing movie i ever saw and i thought silence was a cake walk after that movie was with demi moore....the 7th sign.... freaked me out

MrsMcCartney 03-19-2004 02:24 PM

I saw the original "Lolita" directed by Stanley Kubrick recently, and I gotta say that was pretty messed up.

I also find "The Stepford Wives" very disturbing but I love that movie.....I am anxious for the remake to see if it is any good...I don't know how believable it would be set in the present though. The caveman mentality was still much more prevalent in '75.

Sister Havana 03-19-2004 03:06 PM

The newer Lolita (with Dominique Swain and Melanie Griffith) and American Beauty were good movies, but I felt dirty after I watched them.

norcalchick 03-19-2004 03:07 PM

"Kids" and "Thirteen" are crazy. I'm worried about my kids even though I don't have any yet.

Oh "Being John Malkovich" (sp?) "Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich" hehe. didn't even recognize Cameron Diaz

ZTAMich 03-19-2004 08:43 PM

American History X

GreekLetterGirl 03-19-2004 08:52 PM

Not sure how many have seen this but Monster with Charlize Thearon, is just plain disturbing... it is one of those it's just TOO UNCOMFORTABLE TO WATCH !

They. Cool ass flick.

very good movies

Calling all babysitters of the early '80s!

How about When A Stranger Calls?? (<Ring, ring> "Have you checked the children?") Scared the bejeezus out of me for weeks.

I'd also add/co-sign on The Wizard of Oz. I actually had to be sedated via warm bath and long backrub from Mommy over that film when I was 4 --that Wicked Witch of the West is just CREEPY!

OMG!!!! I saw that one too! I saw it with my brother and sister when my sister and I were in high school and bro was in middle school. He started crying :( I felt so awful. And no, my parents did NOT know what kind of video it was...I am certain they would have laid down the law!

Xylochick216 03-30-2004 09:30 PM

I think Higher Learning was very disturbing, but very impactful at the same time. Same goes for Schindler's List. American History X is just frightening.

Now, you're all gonna laugh, but the two movies I can't watch at all are Jurassic Park and Independence Day. I've always been terrified of dinosaurs and I spent the whole movie crying and I had nightmares for weeks.

Kill Bill left me thinking, the film by Mister Tarrintino.

Lady Pi Phi 03-30-2004 09:57 PM

I have another one to add to the list.

Dirty Pretty Things

Here's the synopsis from Rogers.com:

Set in London’s secret underworld, where everything is for sale, this is the story of a young man, Okwe and a Turkish chambermaid, Senay, who work at the same West London hotel – a breeding ground for illegal activity. They are put to the test when Okwe makes a shocking discovery late one night.

I don't want to give it away, but trust me...it is shocking and rather disturbing. But a good film.

Very Scary. Even the trailer for it was scary. It starts off with a lady looking at herself brushing her hair in the mirror while she's singing Rock a bye baby. When the camera finally shows her face,it's a skeleton.

It's alive scared the hell out of me too

alphagambaby 04-01-2004 11:16 PM

house of sand and fog... the whole thing is just so depressing and the ending is really upsetting, but it is an amazing movie (and book as well)

i'll agree with monster... although the acting was great

what about primal fear? no one has mentioned that one i don't think.... edward norton at the end scared the hell out of me

i agree with requiem too... i saw it in the theatre, knew nothing about it, and was completely unprepared for the ending... i wanted to walk out because i felt sick, but i couldn't look away

happiness, yes... what a fucked up film

anyone seen gummo? it's pretty disturbing (the whole thing with the cats)

the doom generation... the ending with the castration and the american flag... it's just sick... the whole thing is sick really

kids, bully, the newest one is called ken park... they're all disturbing

and not to beat a dead horse, but the passion of the christ was disturbing to me... for obvious reasons

american psycho wasn't disturbing to me, but that's because i had already read the book... once you read it, i don't think anything else can ever really disturb you again lol... the rat scene still won't get out of my brain like 4 years later

and i know this isn't a movie, but it is on DVD now, so i will list it, because it disturbed me more than anything else ever... twin peaks... i've only seen season one because i'm too scared to watch the rest, but BOB is the scariest motherfucker EVER... when he's at the end of the couch looking up at her mom... oh my gosh, i'm gonna have nightmares tonight now

I agree on house of sand and fog. I haven't read the book and I have heard they follow each other pretty closely so i wonder if there's even a point.

I think American Psycho's book was disturbing but the movie was not. The movie focused more on the humor. My friends and I joke a lot about each other being just like the guy in the movie and watch it all the time.

Thirteen - So freaking scary and messed up. Makes me never want to have children. Especially a daughter!

This one hasn't been mentioned, but it goes right along with Schindler's List (which I haven't seen yet, but really want to):

The Pianist - Its a beautiful, wonderful movie. It moved me emotionally and I was so emotional invested in Adrian Brody's character. Its just the fact that those events actuall happened that makes them so horrifying. For example, one scene has Brody's family watching the Nazi's barge into another family's apartment to take them to the camps. An old man is in a wheelchair and they just push him off a balcony. Being a history major, I'm incredibly interested in these movies, but they are so hard to watch. The book is also amazing, but is even more horrifying than the movie.

"Blue Velvet" is the only movie to keep me awake after seeing it. I love scary movies, and they usually don't bother me at all, but that one really creeped me out.

I almost started screaming like a crazy man when I walked into WalMart a few days later and heard Bobby Darrin singing "Blue Velvet" on the muzak.

33girl 07-18-2004 04:30 PM

Bumping because I watched "Requiem for a Dream" last night and it has topped Clockwork Orange as my most disturbing movie ever. I had to sleep with the light on because I was so freaked out - I've NEVER had to do that before. This isht makes Trainspotting look like The Sound of Music.

Can we please just make a list of films that have electroshock treatment in them so I can avoid them? That's the one thing I absolutely can't handle seeing.

BabyP 07-19-2004 06:08 AM

The Crying Game - it was just kind of depressing
Deliverance -Hillibillies incest and the rape scene "I'll make you squeal like a pig"
Ghost Ship (the beginning of the movie)

Requiem is pretty crazy stuff - not sure whether I like it or dislike it, but it makes you squirm, that's for sure.

I still think Clockwork is more disturbing, but maybe that's just me.

one day i was home alone and i decided to watch a movie on our I-control and adaptation. was listed. i was like: ooooo i remember seeing the commercials for this, i think its supposed to be a dark comedy

HOLY COW, i was so freaked out by that movie......i was scared to be by myself and i couldn't explain why. it was just weirdest, creepiest movie i had EVER seen.

TheEpitome1920 07-19-2004 10:27 AM

Pulp Fiction made me SICK. I don't understand why so many people like this movie.

PureGoldF2K1 07-19-2004 11:15 AM

The most disturbing movie I've ever seen is banned in America. My friend George got a kick out of downloading these horrible Japanese movies and I decided to watch one called "Ichi the Killer" with him once. OH....MY....GOD....I felt like I was watching a snuff film...and maybe I was...there was graphic violent rape scenes and the worst possible murder scenes...they were hanging people by the skin of their backs off the ceiling and pouring acid on their faces...needless to say, i did NOT make it to the end of this movie.

The weird part is that it was all in Japanese of course and everyone had nearly unpronouncible Japanese names except for one Japanese woman who was inexplicably named Karen (my name) and she sometimes slipped into English. It was strange.

cutiepatootie 07-20-2004 11:43 AM

Wasn't when a stranger calls back one of tom hanks earliest film roles. I remember that movie and baby sitting was never the same .
