It's been fun reading all of your comments and suggestions! I also have a daughter going through recruitment this week. She was very happy after Round 1, invited back to 11~almost all what she felt were her best fits. Invited back to 7 today, but very disappointed when she lost the one she felt a strong connection to. Had a hard time shaking off the disappointment despite my encouragement that she will end up happy. Praying her sad mood doesn't play into who invites her back after today.
I saw the link above for the livestream for the Tiger Walk--wasn't sure if you all were aware there is also a live stream for Bid Day--here's the link: http://livestream.com/mizzou/BidDay2015 Now after today--does it go down to 3? Oh boy, the end is near! Best of luck to all! |
Hello everyone! It's great to see some other people chiming in on this thread this morning. Momoftiger beagled1 and GoMizzou, that's wonderful your daughters both have so many houses to go back to today! Congrats to all of your special snowflakes!
beagled1 and GoMizzou I remember how hard it was to think that anyone at all would "cut" my precious daughter--couldn't they see how amazing she was?! And it's especially hard when a girl has felt a strong connection with a house--can be hard to move past that. I imagine, GoMizzou, that your encouraging words were playing over and over in your daughter's head as she walked to her first party and helped lift her mood by the time she got there. It's so hard on us Moms--they come to us with all the most difficult feelings and then sometimes forget to tell us when they feel better! (Meanwhile, we're thinking about them...) So great that they are going to Livestream both Tiger Walk and Bid Day this year! I'm very much looking forward to hearing from my daughter about her chapter's new member class. Two more days! It's a long week. Hang in there Moms! Oh and GoMizzou yes, tomorrow there are 3 parties. Unless they've changed it from last year? I guess that's possible but I doubt it. Anyone else know for sure? pearlalum exciting to think your daughter will be coming to Mizzou campus soon! As everyone here keeps saying, such a great school with many wonderful traditions and a strong, interconnected Greek Life. I see you're a Sigma Kappa--I hear wonderful things about that chapter at Mizzou. My daughter has a good friend in that house and it's great to see how much they've grown in just a few years! My daughter's friend is very happy there. |
I am so excited to see that they are live streaming bid day!! Good to "meet" you GoMizzou! What residence hall is your daughter in? Mine is in mark twain.
|
Excited they are streaming bid day. Pretty sure they didn't last year. Very cool!!
|
That is exciting that they are streaming bid day. Thank you GoMizzou for sharing the link. I got to be there for bid day last year. It was a great experience, especially because my daughter received a bid to my sorority. It was such such fun to share the excitement and give her my old necklace with our sorotity's symbol. I was feeling kind of sad to not get to see it this year. Watching on line will be the next best thing.
I'm not sure if it is the same for every house, but in my daughter's house only the seniors will go to Faurot and the rest of the girls wait back at the house to greet the new members there. Looking forward to hearing about your daughters' pref day experiences and when they find their new sisterhoods! Thanks for sharing their experiences with us. |
Good luck to everyone during Preference Round today! Moms, hang on... just one more day!
|
Good luck to all of the moms as they wait to hear all of the details! I am praying my daughter finds her house and her sisters today! She has invites to three very wonderful and all very different houses.
|
Good morning Mizzou PNM Moms! Thinking of you all this morning and remembering the emotions of this day, from when my own daughter went through rush and from my own time rushing and being in a sorority. The active members at all of the houses have been working so hard all week and they are really excited about today. It's a very special time.
I wish all of the PNMs wonderful experiences today and pray that each one who attends Preference Round finds her sorority home. I'm also thinking of the girls who have dropped--please know that if this has happened to any of your daughters that there IS life after recruitment, whatever the outcome. Leaving Rush without a Bid can be tough especially for the freshmen who are just starting out, but Mizzou is an amazing campus with so many opportunities to find community and a place to contribute. Good luck to everyone today! I'm really looking forward to hearing how each one of your daughters is doing. |
My daughter also is going to her top 3 today~struggled when choosing #3~her #4 had been one of her tops all week-but I think she knows she could be comfortable with either...Girls are having to deal with thunderstorms down there this morning~what a day to be all dressed up and in heels! Good luck to all~can't wait to see the live stream tomorrow!

Good Morning too! And good luck to all today. It's storming today in CoMo, so let's hope that everyone has an umbrella and a sense of humor as they (hopefully) attend pref parties. WalkintheWoods says it all, there is life after recruitment as MIZ has so much to offer. Thinking of you mom's and your dd's. Can't wait to hear all about it!
|
Just heard about several girls who got the call today~feel absolutely terrible for them! To go through such a roller coaster of a week-and to end up with nothing-my heart breaks for them...as you all said-there are so many other opportunities-but what a disappointment as your college experience begins.

Good luck to all the girls today. Sounds like they are happy now and headed to their soon to be homes tomorrow.
Sorry to hear about released girls. My daughter knew girls who had been released. And she entered this round with 2, rather than 3 houses, so I was a wreck. Hope the weather improves! |
Mom of tiger and GoMizzou so happy for your daughters that they are returning to houses they feel connected with. So exciting to know that tomorrow they will be opening their bids and starting their journey as new members of a sisterhood.
It's so bittersweet when so many girls are so happy but others are heartbroken. There are lots of great ways to get connected at Mizzou, but it's hard for girls to see the other options when they are so sad about getting cut. My daughter has several close friends who are independents and they are all having wonderful experiences at Mizzou. Hopefully the girls that were released today will find other ways to connect and be involved at Mizzou. Looking forward to hearing from you moms of PNM's tomorrow about where your girl's end up! Hope you have some fun and engaging things planned for the rest of today. The days seem so long when you're waiting! A glass or two of wine never hurts either! |
Pleased and relieved to report that my daughter was invited to her top 3 from yesterday,
including the house that has been her favorite all week. One more day! |

Beagled1 so happy for you and your daughter!
Excited to hear where she ends up tomorrow! |
COB or Snap Bid
Hi! Does anyone have any information on Snap Bids or COB at Mizzou? Thanks to all for the information on this thread. It has been helpful.

Ok. Thank you. I'm not familiar with the process.
|
Snap bids happen after preference parties, prior to the start of Bid Day, when bids are actually opened. COB happens after formal/primary recruitment is finished. Hope this helps.
|
Beagled1! That's great news!!

ILMOM - Check the Mizzou PHA website in a few weeks. Mizzou adopted a more formal procedure last year for Spring COB. Interested girls fill out a form on line, and PHA makes those forms available to any sororities who are COB'ing. It seemed like a good number of sororities COB'd the Spring '15 semester. However, filling out the form does not guarantee any of the sororities will invite you to their COB events.
Maybe it is just me, but many more stories from Mizzou this year of girls only having one or two houses left after round two, then being released just before preference. Last year, I only remember stories of girls dropping out when they didn't get invitations back to their favorites (a lot of girls did that this morning). I'll be interested in seeing what quota is tomorrow. Fewer girl signed up for recruitment, and with all the releases and withdrawals, I'm expecting smaller pledge classes this year. |
MIZparent, Have there been that many releases and withdrawals?
|
ILMOM it sounds like things didn't go how your daughter hoped it would. Know that she isn't alone. That is the very difficult side of sorority life is that lots of girls experience heart break.
COB can be a great alternative, especially if grades impact a girl being released from houses. If a girl can do well her first semester of college it opens up possibilities for COB. Getting to know girls in the houses she is interested in helps a lot. COB often goes best for girls who have friends in the sorority they are interested in. Not all houses will COB, but many do. |

I especially feel for the girls who didn't get invited to the preference round. I think there is an expectation going into recruitment that if you aren't a grade risk and you make it to the third round, you will at least be invited to one house for preference. Hopefully, some of these girls will find a home through COB. |
Someone said they reversed philanthropy and sisterhood rounds this year? I can't remember the order last year. Does that affect the manner in which cuts are made? Guessing not.
A friend's niece is going through. I know her GPA was not good and was worried for her. I didn't get a number of houses she returned to in the 2nd round, but I knew she only had 2 yesterday. Not sure of today's status. But based on the PHA grade guidelines, I wouldn't be surprised if she was released and grades being a factor. This I think it where it is so hard for girls, because they relate it back to not being liked. |
MIZparent and Bluedoor: Thank you for all the good feedback. My daughter was a "grade risk" so we knew it would be a challenge for her in that respect, but we were hoping the strength of her overall resume would help. Nonetheless, she ended up with four houses after 1st round, then down to three yesterday (of which she was really interested in one of them) but unfortunately, she got cut from that one today which left her with two she didn't feel a connection to. She decided to drop today.
I decided to ask about COB so she could work on getting her grades up this semester and give her the chance to get to know more people (we are from out of state and she didn't go there with anyone she knows) and hopefully give it another shot during spring semester. I am very thankful for all the advice and comments...please keep them coming! :) |
AZTheta: Can you explain what a snap bid is? You mentioned it happens after pref parties but before bid day. I'm not sure what it is or how often it occurs. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!
|
NorthernMom~maybe that switch did have something to do with it...I have to say I was shocked to hear so many getting the call and/or dropping because they only had one or two yesterday that they didn't connect with. And you just never know, some of these girls that were cut or dropped were the whole package--I really don't get it. Very much looking forward to tomorrow-and looking like it should be good weather for Bid Day!
|
I feel that with the number of girls in each house, and the socials being so short, that surely girls can find friends in every house. I hate that people drop when they still have choices, while others get dropped that would love a chance. That being said, I know it's difficult and feelings run high. I suppose dropping out is a good choice if they are not willing to give their remaining choices a try. I'm hoping cob is a viable option for those girls. It can be such a frustrating process when you aren't privy to how choices are made.
|
ILMOM - That same scenario happened to several of my daughter's friends in the dorm. Some dropped because they didn't feel a connection to the choices they had left. A few were released. One COB'd this past spring and joined a group. The others didn't. One is going through recruitment now (not sure if she did last year). But they all are friends, regardless. I'm sure your daughter is disappointed, but remind her that it didn't mean she wasn't like-able.

ILMOM here, from the NPC "Green Book":
If a fraternity has not filled its quota through bid matching in membership recruitment, the College Panhellenic Membership Committee may immediately ask if the fraternity wishes to extend a bid to anyone not originally on its bid list. Snap bidding is an option available to chapters that did not match all quota spaces in bid matching, whether matching by hand or by computer. Snap bidding is done before bids are distributed. Snap bidding is not intended to fill spaces in the chapter total. Any chapter may prepare a separate snap bid list that can be used at the proper time for determining snap bids. Snap bidding is open to any woman who participated in at least one round of the designated membership recruitment process. If none of the woman’s preferences have matched a fraternity’s bid list, the Panhellenic Membership Recruitment Committee may contact the woman and ask if she will accept a bid from a fraternity not previously listed among her choices, provided the fraternity has notified the Panhellenic of its desire to offer her a bid. I hope this helps you (and others). There is a little more to it but that is the fundamental info. |
IL Mom, you might want to check out the Spring 2015 grade report for Mizzou's GLOs. It might give your daughter an idea of what she might want to set for a GPA goal. Also, keep in mind the number of COB spots will vary by organization and will vary from year to year.
|
AZTheta: Thank you. That helps!
Mumomm: Totally agree with you. Her decision to drop today was not an easy one, but in the end, she felt in her heart that the two she had left were not the right fit for her. Maybe that opens up a spot for someone else...again, I have no idea as this is all new to me. NorthernMom: Thanks for your post. It sure seems like there a lot of different scenarios and in the end, we have to believe that what is supposed to be will be. :) Best of luck to all the girls! |
Ok, I understand the grade risk issue for PNM.
BUT- Mizzou, is notorious for girls who drop because PNM's do not like their remaining invitations for pref. (Tier System in young minds) Personally, this defeats the whole concept of joining the Greek System! Maybe they should look to Alabama, that has usually over a 90% placement. |
