Does anyone have a suggestion for a bridesmaid's dress that can easily be worn again but that would also be fitting at a white tie? I don't want the bridesmaids to look undressed but I also want them to be able to easily wear the dress again.

I like Grecian draped dresses like this one from Zara, it looks good on most shapes.

IMHO the best way to ensure that a bridesmaid can wear a dress again is to allow her to choose the design. I was a bridesmaid and the bride used this designer in Brooklyn: http://www.kimeradesign.com/occdresses/occdresses.html

The bride chose the primary fabric for us to use (a red raw silk), and then let us decide on the shape of our dresses and what fabrics to use in the trim. I have worn that dress to many events in the last several years. I'm grateful to a bride with both good taste and good sense!

The photo album section of the site has lots of gorgeous pictures of wedding parties dressed this way (one or two shared fabrics, each dress is unique in shape and trim) -- they look unified, but not cookie-cutter. I think it's very sophisticated. http://www.kimeradesign.com/album3.html

I like that maids can wear different colors now. Back in the day I saw a wedding where the first bridesmaid wore dark pink, the second a little lighter pink, and so on through 6 more until the maid of honor was wearing a very pale pink. So many people thought it was really radical! lol

Oh, LOVE the J Crew neutral lineup! To my eye, that's a woman's wedding, not a girl's. The vintage-style stuff is great too.

Black Bridesmaids Dresses for Summer Wedding?

I thought I had solved my dilemma of "good dress for black tie optional that can be worn again" by selecting black bridesmaids dresses. (We're doing black, white, and pink for our color scheme). The girls can choose a cut that fits them nicely (within guidelines) and I've selected the fabric.

Fiancee is concerned that black, even at an evening reception, will seem more like a funeral than a wedding. Now, I'm also concerned.

Opinions? Would the following ensemble appear too much like a funeral? The pink sash would tie in back, rather than front.

I wouldn't say it looks like a funeral. If your wedding is formal, it's perfect, especially if you are having an evening affair. I mean if you are doing a morning or outdoor wedding then I would shy away.

I like how the pink sash pops off the black dress too. Oh and the matching shoes!

We're doing an indoor wedding (because it's Wisconsin and I never trust the weather) in the evening, so I'm hoping it's not too formal.

I think I'm going to buy the shoes for them, so they don't have to spend extra money on shoes. (Even though I would totally wear a pair of hot pink pumps again.)

You are the bride - if you like it, then rock it! I'm too old fashioned for it, but I admit, it looks lovely.

Love it! I think that'll be a classic look. I went to a wedding a few years ago where the maids were all in black with red accents and shoes and it was amazing.

Where are you getting married? We should have Wisconsin wedding talk! :)

I can count on one hand the number of weddings I've been to where the bridesmaids weren't able to have some sort of say in the dress. Maybe it's a new thing?

I've seen everything from selecting one style from J.Crew (which is good for the wear-it-again option), and allowing the maids to pick their colors, to having everyone wear a black dress they like.

Fashionista GCers, I need your help!

As mentioned in another thread, we are now looking at navy and pink (more of a hot pink/fuchsia...generally a brighter pink--not soft pink). I was thinking navy dresses with pink flowers would be super cute...but then what would the guys wear?? Navy tuxes would be so much navy...but I'm not wild on black tuxes with navy ties/vests. Would gray tuxes with navy ties/vests work? I just can't picture anything.

I'm open to other ideas as well! :)

KSUViolet06 08-23-2011 10:35 PM

I'd say so. As long as your wedding isn't some evening ultra-formal affair.

Yay for black! I may have mentioned it before already, but in my brother's wedding, I served as a groomsmaid, in addition to his groomsmen. My sister-in-law had a bridesman on her side, in addition to her bridesmaids.

I wore a black dress and the bridesman wore the bride's side colors. It was fabulous! Plus, I got the groomsman gift (a collectible kukri, which is a Nepalese knife kinda like a machete) instead of the bridesmaid gift (a Disney snowglobe). Best wedding ever.

I'm with you on black and navy. If you're definitely doing tuxes I think gray would be nice, I'm slightly biased because gray is my favorite color (I know, this is weird). I will say that navy (think very deep midnight, is it black or blue? navy) is actually a traditional color for formalwear, though black has become the more popular choice. I think you could probably pull it off in a not too overwhelming way.

Also, if the groom is wearing a tux, the groomsmen should too. If the groom wears a suit, the groomsmen should too. Mismatching attire is a pet peeve of mine.

Thank you. This drives me crazy. I went to a wedding where the groom had a tux on and the groomsmen each had on a shirt and tie, with no jacket.

The bride and groom will stand out enough on the wedding day: you don't have to make everyone else look awful or out of place to get noticed.

I posted in the wedding gown thread that EVERYTHING Priscilla of Boston is on sale at all of their salons AND every salon that carries Priscilla (because the brand is being discontinued.)

Everything is on sale at like 50-60% off or more. Of course what's there varies because they're selling samples only, but it's worth checking out if you're looking for maids dresses or flower girl dresses (and you don't mind buying off the rack):

So, my mom and I went to check out two DJs this morning. We had an hour to kill in between and it just so happens that we were near a Davids Bridal and House of Brides. We stopped in and I actually found a few styles that I really liked at both stores. (Never heard of House of Brides before and I never found anything that particularly stood out at DB). I found a few I LOVED at David's Bridal and a few other nice options at HoB.

Unfortunately, I can't find the pictures of the House of Brides dresses, but here are the 3 DB dresses my bridesmaids are gonna try on:

http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_...esmaid-Dresses

http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_...esmaid-Dresses

http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_...esmaid-Dresses

(I'm in love with dress #1 and really, really like #2 as well).

The color we would go with is "Sangria". Now the weird thing about Sangria...it's not quite the purple we originally had in mind; it really has a bit of a red hue to it. Also, it looks different depending on the fabric/lighting. So I creeped on Google images to see if I could find some real examples. This is how I think they would actually look, based on the fabrics of the dresses I picked:

http://ps.pastorestudio.com/wp-conte.../sangriaPS.jpg

However, here's another "davids bridal sangria" example:

http://biancaandstevens2010wedding.w...jpg?1299175127

So I'm not quite sure how the end product would look...I like them both, but I do like #1 a bit more. Based on what I saw in person, they should end up looking a bit more like #1.
