H and I did the ancestry DNA kits...has anyone else ever done this? I found a second cousin that I had never met (to my knowledge) on ancestry this way. |
Just saw the promo for the next season! Aiesha Tyler was in it Whoo hoo!

We had to get a new Dish unit so it deleted the ones I'd DVRed. Boo! Will have to set it up again.
Has anyone seen this show? http://www.pbs.org/weta/finding-your-roots/ I did the Ancestry DNA test but it was sort of a bummer that they can get more specific with male DNA vs. women's. It's still very cool and it works with your family tree if you've already done that on the site. |
I like that show. The Morgan Freeman episode was very interesting. He has donated quite a bit of money to the Choctaw Nation museum, and it turns out he doesn't have any Choctaw ancestry...he said maybe he should apologize to them! Prof. Gates said it is common for African Americans to believe they have Native American ancestors, but very few do. He further explored that misconception, which was quite interesting.
Also interesting was his own DNA analysis, when he revealed that he is a descendant of a medieval Irish King (he was drinking Guiness in an Irish pub with a distant relative). |
I love these shows. I want to do the DNA test, but I'm a bit afraid of my DNA used for nefarious reasons. Yeah, I can be that paranoid!

Did Gates ever work at the National Archives? I'm trying to remember the name of the gentleman who worked there, and came to speak at the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society. He was EXCELLENT!! Henry Louis Gates, Jr, sounds like the right name, and would be about the right age. Hmmm...

Last week, I watched 3 episodes of a pretty new TLC show about adoptees tracking down their birth mothers. I heart that show. AFAIK, DNA will just tell you percentages of of your racial ancestry. How do they connect it to actual people? Through their own records of DNA tests? And hasn't ancestry.com gobbled up just about every other genealogical site on the Web? This concerns me a bit. I might not want my ancestry as publicly accessible info. |

"Ancestry's brands include Ancestry, AncestryDNA, AncestryHealth, AncestryProGenealogists, Family Tree Maker, Fold3, Newspapers.com, Find a Grave, Archives.com, and Rootsweb. Under its subsidiaries, Ancestry.com operates foreign sites that provide access to services and records specific to other countries in the languages of those countries. These include several countries in Europe (covered by Ancestry Information Operations Company[5]) as well as Australia and Canada." |
Ancestry/geneology is a hot business right now.

Felicity Huffman was featured this winter on Finding Your Roots, with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. As a professor, I wonder what he's thinking about her now, in light of the college admissions scandal. I'd like to go back and watch that episode, because if I'm recalling correctly, she had a troubled relationship with her own mother, who casually told her one day that she was the product of an extramarital affair. And, she felt her mother didn't handle that very well. Multi-generational parenting issues, yikes.

Felicity Season 5, Episode 2: Mystery Men |
My brother has forbidden anyone in the family to get their ancestry done.
I’ve asked him “Why? Have you committed a crime and if I get my ancestry done, do you think the police will have a link to catch you? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? ARE YOU GOING TO PRISON?” Cracks me up every time. |
Soooooo, if anyone is still interested, Finding Your Roots is back! (Does the 'silent joy of happiness' dance :D )

Yay!! I love this show! I will admit that some of the more recent guests are not as well-known to me, but I'm a little out of when it comes to recently famous/young celebrities.

Can't wait until October 8th! |
Has anyone heard anything about a new chapter of WDYTYA? being broadcast? I realize that it would be hard, what with the world closed for repairs, but it's my understanding that a lot of people are using this time to work on their genealogy.
