That's how all of my ballet competitions worked, and in Irish dance, a feis only counted in your standings if you had a certain number of competitors. Am I the only person that wouldn't want a trophy from a competition that had 2 competitors? Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist, but I would consider it worthless.

Other than Toddlers and Tiaras, I'm completely unversed in the pageant world. Does anyone know if the bigger pageants that focus on teenagers and young adults also have all of the extra/optional categories? It makes sooo much more sense now why some people had won certain awards at pageants on the show- they were potentially the only one competing for it:rolleyes:

Also--I don't get why they don't combine age divisions or something where there are like 2 kids in one of them.

For example, my cousin was into dance. At her dance comps, if there were only like 2 teams in a division, they combined it with a bigger division so the kids would have some legit competition. Parents didn't like to pay $ and drive all the all the way to a comp for their kids to compete against one team.

It's like pageants are opposite, parents don't mind paying a ton of money for their kid to compete against like two girls because it means their "special little snowflake" is guaranteed a prize.

KSUViolet06 06-17-2010 05:40 PM

Typically, when you get to be a teen, you either:

*Quit pageants for some other activity like a sport.
*Keep doing these little rinky-dink pageants with like 2 competitors in them and call yourself a "beauty queen".
*Decide to quit these pageants and move on to the more serious pageants like Miss Teen USA.

I have followed Miss USA and Miss America for awhile and surprisingly enough, the girls who do the best at it (and end up Miss "City" or Miss State USA) are not typically girls who have been doing pageants since birth. Some of the girls didn't even start until they competed in a local Teen USA at the high school level.

That's why I find it so funny that so many of these moms want their girls to be Miss USA and Miss America. Those pageants are MUCH different from Little Miss Treasured Dollz and doing pageants since birth doesn't = growing up and winning a huge national pageant.

From what I could garner from a show (that just a few episodes) was about a SC Pageant coach, called "King of the Crown". One episode featured the infamous Miss Teen SC, Kaitlin Upton, trying to redeem herself and prove that she wasn't um, less than intelligent - you have to watch it; the scene where she is practicing for the interview is priceless.

Anyway, one of his students was competing in a "glitz" pageant, the type of pageant which most of the T&T episodes feature. He had never been to a glitz pageant. Once at the pageant, he started freaking out when he saw some of the "routines" the contestants (the random flailing) were doing during "outfit of choice" and/or talent part, or whatever they called it.

I wish I could find full episodes. They were well worth the time purely for the snark value.

I have seen King of the Crown and liked it. That ep was hilarious. It just shows that people who are involved in "grown up" pageants think those other pageants are ridiculous. He used to see some of the girls overdone "glitz" outfits and be like "ummm that is totally cool if you're a stripper."

I remember in one ep, the guy said something like "we get girls coming in here who have done glitz pageants and you almost have to start all over with teaching them how to dress." In the more serious teen pageant systems (Miss USA and such), you actually get points OFF for having a dress that is overdone like that, or being too tan.

KSUViolet06 06-24-2010 11:45 PM

Why are 90% of these people convinced that pageants are going to lead to their kid being an actress or TV star?

Mom: "Lauren is going to end up being in her own show. Like Hannah Montana."

The odds of a kid becoming a famous TV or movie star are CRAZY.

And I love the "We put her in pageants to help boost her modeling career" thing.

I'm pretty sure that actual modeling agencies are not looking for kids who look and dress like they're 23 in photos. Any child model I've ever met has looked regular and age appropriate.

Also, why put into a kids' head that they're destined to be that? The odds are not in their favor.

I'd think that growing up believing that she's a "special little snowflake" who is destined to be a model would really hurt a kid's self-esteem once they got older and realized that they were not model/TV material.

BabyPiNK_FL 06-25-2010 12:51 AM

I agree, the thousands they spend on travel, clothes, and beauty treatments and trainers could be spent on traveling to agencies and professional pictures. It might even be less!

That was some crazy, right there.

I SAW THAT!! That woman is CRAZY!!! What normal 31 yr old hangs out with and competes with children??? A few of my favorite moments:

Her mom still does her hair and comes with her to her pageants. She wasn't particularly happy with her hair for that pageant. I wouldn't be particularly happy with my daughter.

Brandi's comment at the end that Jesus answers our prayers and she is competing to glorify Jesus. I'm pretty sure Jesus thinks you're a dumbass.

Her talent outfit where she dressed up as Glenda the Good Witch and did a scene from the Wizard of Oz with a 5 yr old. She made some comment about people loving her Glenda outfit. No, they are probably staring at you in horror.

Back to the question on how each of the three kids featured in each epi usually win something...I wonder if they tape like 10 kids for each pageant, then choose the three who actually end up receiving some crown/award. It might explain why we see so many of the same kids from other episodes in the background.

As for taping the days and week up until the pageant, reality shows often have the people change clothes to make it seem like it's a different day; or vise-versa, if they want a day to look long, they have the people wear the same thing to look like it was a very busy day.

In the case of the former, it's easy to get a week's worth of "preparation time" on video for a bunch of different kids.

Lurker here...but if you like T&T and LMP (my guilty pleasures too!) go to YouTube and look up "Painted Babies". My TiVo picked up "Painted Babies at 17" the other night. It's a documentary followup on two pageant babies that BBC had followed in 1995 when they were 5 years old. In 2007, they followed up with the two girls to see what they were doing now that they were about to graduate high school. I found it FASCINATING - one girl who was a bratty pro at the whole thing had completely dropped pageants by age 7. The other girl was still doing them in hopes to win $$ and cars for her grandma..sad...

Seriously, look up "Painted Babies" (the whole thing is on YouTube) and then watch "Painted Babies at 17" which was on TLC the other night, but might be on YT as well.

All those shows are trainwrecks I seem to be glued to - a whole underworld I never really knew existed!

I have seen BOTH of those.

The older lady on the ep of T&T TOTALLY reminded me of the girl who was still doing cheesy kid pageants at 17.

I found it funny that the other girl and her parents look back on it and say how silly it was that they were so into it.

I might add that 17-year-old beauty queen had no college plans, while the other girl was going away to school.

Interesting, especially since sooo many of these parents think these pageants are going to open acting, modeling, etc doors for their kids. Most of the time, they don't and your kid stops doing them after you've wasted thousands of dollars. lol.

Boo. Thought maybe I was giving you something you'd not seen before! :) I was amazed at how poised/smart/pulled together/down to earth the one girl (Brooke?) was. She was the brat when she was 5 and her mother was more than irksome. The Louisiana family just made me sad...really sad.

ree-Xi 06-27-2010 05:52 PM

That girl still cannot sing. "I'm a blond yeah, yeah, yeah"...

AnchorAlum 06-27-2010 10:01 PM

The painted babies were done by the BBC as documentaries.

Completely pathetic. As are all of these pageants - has anyone ever seen a slender mother with anything past a high school education?

Disclaimer! I used to rep several lines that sold those socks with all the frills and matching bows and headbands, and the crinolines that went under those dresses to pageant stores. So even though I was cringing inside I sold a TON of those things. Made very good money. Those mothers can't afford clothes for themselves but they'll drop hundreds on one dress.

Nope.

And yeah, it's ridiculous how much money goes toward that. One mom on one ep said flat out "I'd like to fix our house, sell it, and move to something bigger, but pageants are more important."

It's funny how so many moms say "pageants are an investment in my daughter's future."

No. Just be honest and say "she does this because I'm fat and ugly and I'm living vicariously."

I happen to know a lot of pageant girls from college that were competing at the state/national level...interestingly I can't think of one that participated in that stuff as a child.

The "big girl" ones have merit...I don't get it, but a lot of my friends treated it as a hobby and had fun. The ones who "made it" really did get some college money out of it. To each his own. But at least an 18 year old has some say so in whether or not she WANTS to participate in the first place. Some of these kids might enjoy the pageant thing but I'm somehow betting they don't take it as seriously as their moms do.

ETA: I forgot that last week at some point I was catching up with a girl who participated in pageants and she told me how much she's making to coach kids in her down time. It is outrageous what these parents pay for what is essentially a hobby.

LOL! These trashy kids aren't going to college! Every 'professional' pageant kid I've known has barely made it through high school. Like y'all were saying: look at the moms! Do you think that an education is a priority for them?

And I don't think we have to worry about them going Greek if they do squeak into college.

Low C Sharp 06-28-2010 12:46 PM

One little girl (Brooke) featured in a documentary 12-plus years ago ended up at the University of Tennessee, and I believe she went ZTA. But her family never acted as trashy and ignorant as the stars of this show.

Did you watch last week? One little girl dressed as Madonna with gold pointed boobs, and another dressed like Michael Jackson while grabbing her crotch and gyrating. I knew it would be featured on "The Soup" and praise be to Joel McHale, it was. I always knew that some of these parents were messed up, but those two were disgusting to me.

tinydancer 07-06-2010 08:53 PM

On young children, the pointy boobs and the crotch-grabbing were offensive to me - and I'm not easily offended. It was just majorly inappropriate.

ree-Xi 07-07-2010 11:00 PM

The mother of a 3-year old (who has been competing since 13 months and has done around 70 pageants - she admitted to doing 2-3 a week in the beginning) said that they have spent around $200,000 so far. And what is up with the name "Aniston"? SHM.

The mother of the other 3-year old, whose husband is in the armed forces, lies and sneaks new expenditures for pageants into the house. I mean, her husband is likely putting his life on the line as a pilot, and his "fixed income" as she calls it, is wasted on this crap. And what kind of "talent" is riding a four-wheeled airplane-shaped scooter? The pageant director made a big deal explaining that the minimum age for talent is 3 because you have to have "real talent".

Craziness abounds.

MUSK81 07-09-2010 10:09 PM

I loved it when Aniston kissed her stick horse and then just dropped him and refused to do anything else! ROTFLMAO!

KSUViolet06 07-22-2010 01:18 AM

I LOL when the kids cry/don't do it and the parents are like "why didn't you do the routine?" or "why are you crying?"

Um, because she's like 3, hasn't had a nap or something, is cranky, and you are asking her to ride a stick horse in front of people maybe. Not happening.

I also love those people who made built a pageant room in their house for their kid to practice in. That'll be really great when they turn like high school age and decide it's stupid and don't want to do it anymore.

Nanners52674 07-22-2010 08:21 AM

I loved the mom who was like "she's already had 3 pixie sticks but she needs more so she doesn't crash"

Sister Havana 12-29-2010 11:10 PM

Bumping - Toddlers and Tiaras is back tonight!

One mom said that she's spent around $250,000 for her twin daughters to be in pageants so far. The girls are 1!

KSUViolet06 12-29-2010 11:47 PM

^^^ LOL at the waste. The kids could have VERY adequate savings accounts/college funds with that money.

I can't stand hearing Mackenzie screaming and hollering all the time. Her voice just grates on me. And that freaking pacifier stuck in her mouth - will she still have it when she's 10?? It's so ridiculous and the mother knows it. How these mothers allow their kids to be brats then shrug their shoulders is beyond my comprehension. It doesn't even take clever editing to show the kids at their worst.

Alumiyum 12-31-2010 01:19 PM

This show makes me think some people shouldn't be parents. Some kids will turn out bratty no matter how they're raised, but a lot of these little girls are being carefully raised to be horrible prissy princesses that will likely make those around them miserable because they're convinced that the world revolves around them.

Blech.

BAckbOwlsgIrl 12-31-2010 02:36 PM

Just think, Mackenzie will probably be going through Recruitment in about 14 years! Bet you can't wait (sic) for her to be your new member class! NiNi and all.

When I saw Mackenzie, her fits and her NiNi, the first thing that I wanted to do was call the Super Nanny. She needed the Naughty Stool and the Time Out area. Super Nanny would have a damn field day on that show.

I also would have snapped that binky NiNi right on the spot. Forget weaning her off of it. Cold turkey all the way.

As for Danielle, her mom could totally use some work. I see this with a lot of the parents on the show. They are morbidly obese. Perhaps the best thing that they can do is to spend more time on themselves. Instead they build their kids up, making the kids look good in an effort to build themselves up and live vicariously through them.

I don't care how much money you have, the tattoos on the twin's mom were nasty. I pray that her kids never get that many, if any, tattoos.

According to carnation, the majority of these types of pageant kids don't even go to college. LOL.

carnation 12-31-2010 03:06 PM

Too true. I mean, look at their parents. And can you imagine what would happen if Makenzie went through rush someday and acted entitled? Who would even give her recs anyway? The good kind, that is.

BAckbOwlsgIrl 12-31-2010 04:59 PM

Didn't know that they did not go to college. I wonder why not?

Oh and can you imagine Danielle going through Recruitment? Only to not get a top house? But, a lesser second tier chapter, bottom tier chapter or no chapter at all? Perish the thought! Especially, when she considers herself to be prettier than the other girls and feels sorry for them. I would love to see that crying fit when that happens. Looking forward to that reality television show.

Seriously, I can not believe that these parents allow their kids to be filmed like this. I would never want to my kid to shown like the screaming brats these kids are. I would be bloody ashamed of them and me as a parent. And that these parents just let it happen and dismiss it on television is beyond me. Five minutes of so-called-fame is not worth the stupidity of their actions or lack of.

AnchorAlum 01-02-2011 10:43 PM

The mother is responsible. 100%. She doesn't have the brains to come in out of the rain and I honestly believe she thinks she gave birth to a toy instead of a person.

Is it too late to give HER a spanking?

Random comments:

Ava's dad registers very high on my gaydar.

Who do they call the talent portion talent? Dressing up like Lady Gaga/Madonna/etc. is not a talent. Ballet? Jazz Flute? Those are talents. And what's the point of having 2-3 year olds in the "talent" portion anyway? They aren't really doing anything. I've seen a FEW kids on this show with actual talents (older kids), but most of them are just wearing costumes and acting "cute."

I'd be a little upset if I did something awesome for talent and lost to a 2 year old in a cone bra.

Also, what good is winning $1,000, when you spent more than that just to participate?

And I can't help but LOL when parents say "this is just a stepping stone for Miss America/USA." Nope.

BAckbOwlsgIrl 01-06-2011 01:36 AM

$600 Dress!!!

$600 for Mia's dress!!! Holy shit! I don't even spend that much on my formals. The kid will wear it once or twice. Maybe more if they are really into the whole pageant tour thing. But that is just so much for such a little girl! That money could go for so many more things.

Some of these Texas towns are so small. I guess that they do not have much to do than practice for pageants. I know Jarrell, Texas is small. They were nearly wiped off the map five years ago after a tornado hit.

Wonder if there is a second hand shop for pageant dresses? Then again, that would be a major faux pas.

Yes, Ava's dad is on my gaydar.

Loved the term "Pageant Cocaine" for Pixie Sticks.

There are. Some parents sell their kid's used dresses online and in consignment stores when it's time for a new dress. From what I know (I babysat for a lady who's kid did these for awhile), it's pretty common to buy used online (they're not even really used because most girls only wear them once.)

I've never had anything to do with pageants, but I know that in Irish dance, most dresses are second hand, until you get to about prelim champion. I paid $2500 for my dress + shipping from Ireland, so I made sure I took more care of that thing than I did myself. I wore my dress for the minimum amount of time I had to at a feis, kept it in the double layer protective case at home, and made sure it was always safe. While it might be so extreme, I'm guessing it's a similar situation in pageant dresses. Once you retire from Irish dance, or you want a new dress, you sell the old one to pay for the new one. It's pretty common to see ID dresses that were owned for 2+ years, but only worn 4-7 times.
