"rather than going through exactly the same way and expecting a different result"
Isn't this the definition of insanity?

FTW.

Speaking of insanity, I think the reason why we see so many threads like this is because PNMs come to GC, see the answers given to those who came before them but post the same thing anyway, hoping (some expecting) for a different answer.

That sentence makes no sense...........

Believe me.......A girl who goes through formal and is dropped by everyone before Pref won't fare well in most competitive formal recruitments the 2nd time around.....

violetpretty has helped a lot.

i am a junior but i have two majors so i guess i could still be considered a sophmore in academic standing on one. my gpa isnt bad but it isnt as high as id want it to be because i've had a series of health problems in the past year and i work so i dont really do a lot on campus besides study. recs are not important on my campus; not even mentioned. when you said recs i thought you meant an equivalent to a rec aid which i associated with a rho gamma. i'm not transferring just to rush. my sister needs to go to school in a different city and my parents don't want her to live alone so they've volunteered me to live with her which means i have to change schools.

i primarily wanted to join a sorority for the friendships but a huge part was philanthropy. i'm going to be in school for a long time with my majors and i want to help people in the future. I'm not a sloppy dresser; quite the opposite. i work in an office where i have to look nice and my sister is going to fashion school.

i think it would be better if i still am interested at that time to rush after i transfer.

i also have another question. if you go to grad school in the same place you rushed, since being in a sorority is for life, couldn't you still be part of the sorority on campus? i've heard of people changing campuses and having already rushed enter the same sorority/fraternity at a different chapter.

It depends on the sorority. There are certain ones who allow grad students to remain active, while others do not. I know mine doesn't.

My sorority does not allow grad school students to remain as collegiate members, either.

Based on what I've read on GC, the majority of NPCs have similar policies.

No you didn't. If you had, they would have given you a bid.

And you call me mean?

outoftheloop, VioletPretty and gee_ess have good/helpful advice. Just ignore the mean girls.

Hey that's me!

I rushed the second semester of my freshman year (we had spring formal recruitment). Our school had 4 chapters. I was invited back to 2 chapters on night 3, but was not invited to any Pref parties. I ended up going through recruitment with Zeta Tau Alpha, which was colonizing at our school after formal recruitment. Clearly, that went well for me :)

I don't think it would necessarily be bad to try again. I did know a few girls who tried once and didn't do well for some reason or another (shy, didn't know many people, tried too hard, etc) and managed to do well the second time around (like me!) but I also knew just as many girls who were clearly cut for a reason. Only you can determine if you're ready to try again.

I felt for you and your rush experience. I have two daughters and the same thing happened to one of them. She did decide to rush a second time and the same thing happened again. We will never really know what happened but I believe it was because she is a little reserved and not a party girl. The one young lady's post - addressed that being too much of a partier can be negative but the other may also be true. It was especially painful because she was a legacy through me and her aunts. I trusted that the rules of my day would benefit her, but on her campus legacies were not valued.
My sorority life made my collegiate experience very special but the events with my daughter have changed the way I now feel about my affiliation. I will never feel the same way because of the heartache associated with her rejection. I did not want my second daughter to rush but she was determined and it turned out positively for her. It might have helped that my sorority was not on her campus so she viewed the chapters differently.
Don't be too hard on youself because the rush experience is hard on the chapter also. They have a limited time to meet the prospective members and decide who seems like a fit for their chapter. The sororities have likely picked some great girls but they have also picked a few that will not make good sisters. They have also missed some great girls - YOU! :) The process is not perfect. Don't beat yourself up . Look for another group on campus to join that is more accepting.
Good luck!

A couple of things:

*It's not that legacies aren't valued. At some schools (particularly at big schools like Bama, LSU, etc.) the chapters have enough legacies going through to fill an entire pledge class with JUST legacies. It's just impossble for them to pledge EVERY SINGLE ONE. It's certainly not because they don't value them, because they do pledge quite a few legacies, just not ALL of them.

*I wouldn't say that the sororities made poor membership selection decisions (i.e. "they picked some girls that probably wouldn't make good sisters.") because your daughter was cut. I don't think that's fair.

VTgoober 09-22-2008 12:53 AM

Does it hurt your chance of getting a bid if you cannot go to any of the greek events before recruitment? I am transferring in the spring and they are all in the fall since VT has deffered recruitment.
