ZTAMich - I'll assume that's just a typo - I couldn't be an AEPi without undergoing some major surgery http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Diet Rite has been made with Splenda for about a year; IMO, it tastes much more like regular soda than anything made with aspartame (like Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi).
KSig RC - I agree that the Atkins diet does require you to cut simple sugars out of your diet. Most diets do, for that matter, and that's a good thing. However, I'd like to see these "studies" you refer to, that say that's the main reason you lose weight on Atkins. You have to watch complex carbs too - your body metabolizes these almost as easily as sucrose. You can't eat bread, rice, etc. and say you're following the Atkins diet. If you read his book, you'll see why. That said, there are plenty of weight-loss plans out there that will allow you to eat complex carbs, and one of them may be better suited than Atkins to a given person. Atkins works for me, but that's not necessarily true for everyone. You just have to find what's right for you. Oh, and finest_alum - there are a few medical conditions (like kidney trouble) that make the Atkins diet inadvisable - do you have one of those? Aside from that, there are a lot of doctors out there who blindly follow the low-fat diet idea without fully investigating all the scientific evidence at hand. Read Dr. Atkins' book - and then see if you can still call him a "quack". Remember that he's been promoting this diet for longer than most of us have been alive, and IT WORKS. |
I LOVE the elliptical machines! I have a bad ankle (like, I should probably get surgery on it) and I CANT run at all but I can do 30 minutes a day on the elliptical no problem!!!

aephi, I feel luck such a dork for my typo, I laughed and blushed at the same time. Thanks for the great post on the benefits of Atkins. It works great for me too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I permentaly borrowed his book from my mommy.
passes ya a diet rite For those of you who may be skeptical about Atkins and are looking for something else to diet on, try reading Suzanne Summers's GET SKINNY ON FABULOUS FOOD books. She doesn't cut out any food groups, but shows you how eating certain food combinations makes a differnce in how your body digests and stores it. Like Atkins tho, it pays to read the book all the way through. She has a good right up in her latest book, the title escapes me, about all the other diets out there too. S.S. suggests eating fruits alone, on an empty stomach, and eating carbs with veggies or proteins with veggies but never carbs and proteins together, bc of how they are digested in your body. I think her idea sounds good, but I'm a carb junkie and know I need to eat less of them not balance it out with veggies. ------------------ ~to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle ~ [This message has been edited by ZTAMich (edited August 17, 2001).] |

I just wanted to throw my two cents in here. During this summer I was forced to go on the Candida Diet (a strict no carb diet) because of allergies so I could only eat meat, veggies, milk, and eggs. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Regardless, in a month I shed over 15 lbs! I swear it works, and I feel so much better! Just a thought. I know it's hard to cut out a lot of carbs from the diet, but every little bit helps. My bf also suggest cutting back on soda. He changed to diet coke and lost weight as well.
Don't worry about being "fat". I've been battling with weight problems all of my life. Seriously the best thing you can do is to love yourself regardless of how much you weigh. Self confidence is a beautiful thing! |

In fact, the first two weeks of the Atkins diet is the most dangerous. Strictly following those guidelines is what causes a body to release it's ketones. People who are on the diet for years can develop kidney and liver dysfunction. The funny thing about what you said is that he's been promoting it since before we were born... does that mean it's good??? There have been quite a few medical advances and discovery since Dr. Atkins originally started publishing. Like I said, yes, the diet makes you lose weight but at what cost... and as a final note.... the ONLY ONLY ONLY way to keep weight off is a healthy, BALANCED diet and EXERCISE. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
This is a link to the Atkins site that talks about ketosis:

Thought this was cute (and I didn't want to start a thread!):
WISDOM FROM MY COUSIN When you mix water and flour together, you get glue . . . and then you add eggs and sugar . . . and you get cake. Where did the glue go? NEED AN ANSWER? You know darned well where it went! That's what makes the cake . . . stick to your BUTT! |

My mom told me I was getting chubby. I hate dieting. So I just don't eat and smoke even tho smoking makes me vomit.
I'm awful. |
Try not to listen to the snotty things other people say. In my opinion, most people who pick on others' weight have major weight probs themselves.

If your mom thinks you are gaining weight you know its bad. :)
